Chapter 14 Rival and First Magic

The two girls collide. There are visible sparks. Just kidding but I can't help but feel the electricity in the air. What gives? Their greeting appears reasonable enough, but there is something intense about this encounter. Linda had noticed me, but the girl I was with approached her first.

"Good afternoon."

"Hello."

Like I said completely normal.

"My name is Mary Blue-dragon."

A merry blue dragon? Linda tensed up a little.

"My name is Linda."

"No surname? Are you perhaps the commoner? It seems I jumped to conclusions. Familiar where is your master?"

"That would be my familiar."

"Is that so? I find that hard to believe. Would you not be a noble with such an excellent familiar?"

"He is only a few weeks old."

Linda was responding coolly. I feel a chill in the air. Did the room drop a few degrees? There are some students now watching the exchange. Seems I'm not the only one to notice the atmosphere. Still, they are quite civil. I do not see the big deal. At this time Mary dropped a bomb.

"I would like to purchase your familiar. How much would you like for him?"

"It is not for sale."

It!?

"You needn't be so cold. I am willing to pay a small fortune for him."

"Like I said it is not for sale. That is my only familiar."

"Why not just sell it to me? You can drop-out and go live the rest of your life in luxury."

"No."

Mary's angle. Seems I've figured it out. She wants master to leave. Where is the connection though? If she sells me, she could still attend school right? Don't get me wrong I'm touched that she adamantly refused to sell me. A student in the audience whispered something, and I strained my ears to catch it.

"If she loses her only familiar she'll be kicked out right?"

Oh. So that's the reason master refused. I'm crying on the inside master. The confrontation ended suddenly though. The girl Mary left without so much as a goodbye or any further acknowledgment of Linda. Master continued to stare at the girl until she was out of sight and then proceeded to follow her through the only exit. Oh. Master is leaving now. I walk through the doors and silently follow master back to our room.

Master hopped onto the bed and lay face down. Did she fall asleep?

"Master would you like me to prepare lunch?"

"No thank you."

How polite. But it is about lunch time, and we missed breakfast.

"Why not?"

"I'm tired."

"Would you like to take a nap."

"Not that tired."

"What's wrong?"

"The girl you were with earlier."

"What about her?"

"She is the daughter of Archduke Blue-dragon."

"I've unexpectedly encountered a big shot then?"

"And someone I would have liked to avoid at all costs."

"Sorry."

"Where did you meet her?"

"In the kitchen?"

"What was she doing in the kitchen? She is the daughter of an Archduke."

"I think she was personally training familiars to cook."

"Odd."

"Everyone has their peculiarities. If we are comparing two weird people, you have her beat by a wide margin you know."

Master sits up and glares at me. I nonchalantly stare back. Luckily I know how to press my master's buttons without going too far now. She opens her mouth again.

"She insulted me."

"Your sulking because of a rude comment?"

"She insulted you as well."

"How so? She said I was a fantastic familiar right?"

"You don't seem to understand sarcasm well. You bought Miss Blue-dragon's interest, but she only thought you were peculiar. When she discovered you were my familiar she took offense."

"Why?"

"It was likely your fault."

"Why?"

"I don't know I was not there when you met her."

"I gave her some food."

"As if you could make food that would satisfy someone who grew up in total luxury."

"Hey."

"No offense your cooking is great, but I doubt you would be serving in a luxury restaurant or personally cooking for high nobles and royalty."

"I guess I'm not at that level."

"In any event that must have been the insult."

"She was interested in meeting my master though."

"Of course she would be. What master could be arrogant enough to send food to her?"

"I see the problem now."

"Think before you act."

"Haven't you been the one to advocate that a familiar shouldn't think for itself?"

"Well, you royally failed at that."

"I can't help that I have an ego."

"Obviously."

"So what now?"

"The only option is to turn you into a super exceptional familiar and for me to remain at the head of my class."

"Good goals. Shall we start with teaching me magic then?"

"How do you know familiars can use magic?"

"I feel like they can."

"Sorry, but you have no talent for it."

"What!? How can you know when you haven't given me a shot?"

"I read your status remember?"

"So?"

"Status check can't be fooled."

"So you say but maybe it can."

"It can be fooled but only in certain manners."

"So it can be fooled huh?"

"It can't be tricked into giving false information. Remember I told you that a powerful magician can read the secret ingredient of a recipe while a weak magician cannot?"

"What about it?"

"That was just a generalization, but it means that things can be hidden from the status check."

"I see. So something more important it is harder to detect than?"

"Essentially."

"You said the status check is a simple spell. Maybe I can learn it?"

"Unlikely."

"Don't bash it before we even try it."

"Then try it."

"Huh?"

"Try it."

"Just like that?"

"Do it."

"You are a terrible teacher."

"It is an F-rank magic. Even a child can learn it without instruction."

"Still need to be taught how to do it. I'm not a natural genius like you."

"Anyone with a mana pool can perform an F-rank magic at least once."

"Me included?"

"Yes."

"Well don't I need the incantation and a magic circle?"

"No."

"You used them."

"A magic circle allows the flow of magic to be increased while an incantation enhances the effect of magic. More often than not they are unnecessary though. Most magicians train without ever using them. They're only used when more power needs to be drawn out and sufficient time is available for a long casting."

"Then how do I use magic?"

"While it will bring out a lesser effect you do not need them. The way to use status check is to just invoke it. Saying [status check] helps the visualization. Other than that simply concentrate on the target. If you are looking for something in particular focus on that. It will appear on the status screen summoned. Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"Like I said it depends on your own power. It takes some getting used to, but F-rank magics are generally a learn by doing kind of deal. They aren't dangerous for the most part so just try it."

"Easy for you to say."

"Do it."

"Alright. [Status check]."

I only leisurely said it and did not have anything in mind. Nothing appeared in front of me. Linda growled. Scary.

"Be serious. Focus your mind on something. If you do not have a target, it won't take effect. It is a systematic magic, but it is the basic of the basics. If you can't perform this magic, you will never perform any magic."

"Alright! [Status check]!"

This time I focused on Linda. A screen appeared in front of my eyes. What is this?

Status:

Name: ???

Race: Human

Gender: Female

Age: 15

Composition:

.............

At composition, I stopped reading. It was a bunch of elements and other things like skin, water, bones, etc.

"I did it!"

Linda appeared surprised that I had accomplished the task. If you were expecting me to fail why were you scowling at me when I did not take it seriously? Linda asked me a question.

"What can you read?"

"Well. Almost everything. Only missed your name. B-cup huh. Unexpectedly small."

I get smashed in the face and am sent flying across the room.

I had made it up. It was just a joke. Linda was blushing something fierce though. How cute! I had myself a good laugh. It was the first time I had joked around with master like this. Of course, the master was not amused though. I slept outside that night.
