Chapter 99
"Hey, Castiel?" Lucifer calls from the other end of the house later that day, once Charlie's gone and he and Claire are home. God only knows when Anna and Michael will return as well, but otherwise, the family is back together.
"What?" Castiel calls back.
"Why is everyone asking me if you're dead?"
Castiel laughs. "Google it."
"I'm surprised no one you know has said you're still alive yet," Dean says.
"I know, right? This is weird," Castiel agrees. "This whole situation is weird, really. I've never been hacked before, and there's never been a rumor that I died. Today's just full of new experiences."
"Hilarious ones, too," Dean adds, doubtlessly thinking of his conversation with Gabriel.
"Do you want me to tell people you're still alive?" Lucifer asks loudly.
"I don't care. Do what you want."
"'Kay."
"It's weird, not being able to check Twitter," Castiel tells his boyfriend.
"Maybe it's a good thing you got hacked," Dean replies. "I think you're addicted to social media."
"Am not!" Castiel protests indignantly.
"Are too," Dean replies.
"Am not!"
"Are too."
"Am not!"
"Are too."
"Am not!"
"This is a stupid argument," Dean points out.
"It's better than a not stupid argument," Castiel replies, thinking of all the actual fights they've been in before.
"Oh, true," Dean agrees. "Ooh, hey, on a completely unrelated note, are you free tonight?"
"Why?"
"Because I was wondering if you would like to go on a date," Dean replies.
"A date?"
"Yeah, a date. You know, when two people who —"
"I know what a date is," Castiel interrupts. "But why would you want to go on a date with me?"
"Because we're dating, duh. It's a thing couples do, remember?"
"Yeah, for, like, new couples," Castiel replies. "At this point in the game, what's the point?"
"The point is that I want to take you out on a date," he replies. "An actual, honest-to-god date. I don't know if you've noticed, but we've never actually done that before."
"We've never..." Castiel thinks back to all that time he's spent dating Dean. "Oh my god, we've never been on a date together. Wait, I've never been on a date ever."
Dean gapes at him. "You've never... Okay, you know what? We're doing this the right way. You don't actually have a choice in this anymore, but I'm gonna ask anyway so you get the full experience. Hey, Cas, will you go on a date with me tonight?"
"Do I actually have to answer if I don't have a choice?" Castiel asks.
Dean facepalms. "Yes! This is supposed to be a legitimate date! Treat it like one!" He clears his throat. "Hey, Cas, will you go on a date with me tonight?"
"You seem too casual for a first date."
"What?"
"I'm supposed to get the full effect, right?" Castiel says, a playful grin on his face. "I feel like you're going about this too casually. We only get one first date, Dean. You gotta do it right."
Dean gives him an amused smile. "Oh, you're right. Let me do that again."
He pulls Castiel to his feet, holds out a finger to tell him to stay, and leaves the room. Castiel waits for a minute, then decides to see what's taking so long. He finds Dean at the kitchen table, his back to the living room so Castiel can't see what he's doing.
"Dean, what —"
"Hey, go back!" Dean says quickly, not looking up. "I'll be back within three minutes."
"You better be," Castiel replies, then returns to the living room. He taps his foot impatiently as he waits, wishing Dean would just hurry it up.
Just as he decides to go make sure Dean is still alive, he finally returns, holding something behind his back. Castiel eyes him suspiciously. What could have taken him that long? What's going on right now?
"Castiel," Dean begins with the smile that has everybody swooning over him, "I was hoping you would be so kind as to go on a date with me tonight." He finally shows Castiel what he was hiding behind his back, and it takes all his self control not to laugh.
"Under one condition," Castiel replies.
"Anything for you, love," Dean replies in an over-official manner.
"Don't call me Castiel like that. It's just weird."
Dean laughs. "I'm so sorry," he jokes. "I'll keep calling you Cas, but only if you will let me take you out tonight."
"Of course," Castiel replies with a grin.
"How does seven o'clock sound?"
"It sounds perfect," Castiel assures him.
"Good. I'll pick you up at seven. Except I'll probably still be here because I don't really leave your house a lot, but that's irrelevant. And you didn't take your gift."
Castiel chuckles and takes the "flower" from him. It's a rose made of red construction paper, with a green pipe cleaner as the stem and two green leaves made of paper, all hot glued together.
"It's beautiful," he tells his boyfriend. "I'll treasure it forever."
"You better, because that shit's hard," Dean replies. "So, tonight, seven o'clock. Be ready for the best night of your life."
