Chapter 84
Castiel is the first person awake. He can only imagine when the other two went to sleep last night. Lucifer got Dean hooked on Jacksfilms, so they probably binge watched his videos until four in the morning, and they won't be up anytime soon. That doesn't leave a whole lot for Castiel to do, unfortunately.
He slips out from underneath Dean's arm and grabs his phone to check Twitter for the first time since Jody's show the previous day, but he changes his mind when he sees he has a text from Samandriel. On the lock screen, all he can see is that there is some type of picture, but he can't make anything out, so he opens the message.
Samandriel: Um?
Next is a picture of a Twitter story about Castiel coming out as suicidal. Well fuck.
Samandriel: UmmMmMMmM?!??
Castiel hesitates. How the hell is he supposed to respond to that?
Castiel: So... Yeah. That happened.
When the message doesn't say "read" within a minute, he just assumes Samandriel is still asleep and goes to check Twitter as he originally intended to. He's surprised to see that number one in trending isn't just "Castiel Novak," but #StandWithCastiel. He smiles to himself before beginning to read the tweets.
The first tweet he sees is from Lucifer, which would explain how the hashtag got started.
"Obviously my bro's had it rough lately, but I'll #StandByCastiel til my dying day. <3"
Castiel likes the tweet and replies with a heart emoji, making a mental note to thank Lucifer in person when he wakes up.
"Anyone hating on @CastielNovak for this needs a heart. He's obviously hurting. I #StandWithCastiel."
Castiel gives the tweet a like.
"#StandWithCastiel It's horrible to think that's what people have driven him to."
And another like.
"Idc abt ur thoughts on his music. Don't you dare attack @CastielNovak. #StandWithCastiel."
And yet another like.
"@CastielNovak deserves way more than that. He deserves the world. I #StandWithCastiel."
And another another like.
"I'm glad @CastielNovak opened up abt this so he can see how many ppl #StandWithCastiel."
And another another another like.
He'd continue looking at more tweets, but four "another"s in a row seems a bit excessive, so he doesn't. Instead, he tweets something out himself.
"These #StandWithCastiel tweets just warm my heart. I love you all. What did I do to deserve this?"
Obviously, the likes and retweets and replies come rolling in, and he waits not-very-patiently for the responses to keep him occupied.
"We love you!"
"You existed."
"Honestly, what haven't you done?"
"That's nice and all but what happened to your dog?" With this tweet is a screenshot of his Instagram picture of Misha. Ooh, right. He should probably explain that. He quotes the tweet with a response.
"I got a malfunctioning pup but tech support is fixing him up so one day he'll be better than new! (Well, better to me, at least.)"
He goes back to the original tweet while he waits for responses to that one.
"From one depressed person to another, I want to tell u ur worth it. Love u!"
"I'm confused. Does he have a mental illness or does he just not deal with negativity well?"
Castiel quotes the tweet with, "I can't remember a time before I suffered from depression." He pauses before he tweets it, though. For some reason, he doesn't really want to advertise that fact, as if most people haven't figured it out already. Instead, he copies what he just typed and tweets it as a reply, so it's less visible.
"Sending love your way."
"They say he's not one of us anymore. I think this proves them wrong. Us depressed people #StandWithCastiel."
Castiel quotes the tweet with, "And I stand with you. Hang in there. It'll be worth it in the end."
It's not until after he tweets it that he really takes a moment to think about it. That's what people have always said to him and others in his situation. Don't kill yourself; it gets better. It's become the cliché response to the problem, which is why Castiel said it. He's never believed it, though. He's tried to believe it, sure, but he's never been able to fully convince himself.
But now, looking at everything he has, he's beginning to think that maybe it was right. Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. And maybe, just maybe, he's finally out of the dark.
