Chapter 75
Finally, it's the last concert of the tour. Castiel walks out on stage as usual, going through the usual routine. He can't wait for this to be done so he can get out of Massachusetts and he can go chill at home for a couple weeks until he's going to be on Jody's show again. That's the only thing he really has to look forward to, other than quality time with Misha back home.
It's the third song, and Castiel heads to the front of the stage on the side. It's become muscle memory by now; he's done this so much. He tries to high five as many people as he can, walking across the edge of the stage. It's not until he's nearing the center that he sees something he thought was a near impossibility.
He's standing at the very front, smack in the center of the stage. Unlike those around him who are frantically reaching out to touch Castiel's hand, he holds a hand up as if just reluctantly obliging for society's sake. He almost seems bored here. Castiel wouldn't be surprised. He's more wondering why he's here at all. They're not on the best of terms — far from it. So why would Dean Winchester come to his concert?
Castiel makes a split second decision and pointedly skips over Dean's hand. For someone who didn't seem too interested in a high five, he looks somewhat offended at being passed over like that. Castiel tries not to look back and just continues his concert. He'll just pretend Dean isn't here.
It's nearing the end of the concert when he finally decides he can't just do that. He looks out into the audience just to make sure Dean hasn't left. His arms are crossed and it seems like he couldn't care less if he stayed or left, but he's still here, and that's all that matters right now.
"Alright, I'm going to do something that's probably really stupid and go off script right now," Castiel announces. "I have no idea how this is going to turn out, but since this is my last concert, if things to bad, I can just hide in my room for the next forever."
This earns some laughs, because they laugh at everything.
"New England holds a very special place in my heart. You've got the snow, the beautiful autumn leaves, the most confusing roads, and the best sports teams I have ever seen."
The crowd cheers at that, though he can't tell if it's because they're proud of their sports teams, or if they've figured out where he's going with this.
"I happen to be rather fond of your football team, and I'm sure a lot of you are, too."
The cheering gets louder, and Castiel knows they have at least a general idea of what's going on.
"It's a shame that you had to lose Tom Brady, but I have to say, the new quarterback is quite a player, huh?"
He pauses for a few moments, listening to the deafening cheers of the audience. He risks a glance at Dean, only for a few moments, and he catches the boy glancing around as if preparing for an escape if it comes to that. He looks back over at Castiel, who gives him a small nod, knowing he'll have no idea how to take it if he even notices it. He doesn't wait for a reaction, looking out into the audience instead to continue his mini speech.
"Well, I happen to know that this quarterback is also quite the musician." He pauses for a couple seconds to let the crowds cheer before he continues, "And, as luck may have it, he's in this stadium right now."
The audience starts screaming, louder than ever before, except possibly when Castiel came out on stage for the first time. Castiel gives them a few moments to get it out of their system before he looks over at Dean, who's watching him cautiously with his arms crossed.
"So, I must ask," Castiel continues. "How would you like to come up here and perform with me, Dean?"
He sees Dean say something, but between the distance and the cheering, he can't hear it. He holds a hand up to quiet the audience down and leans towards Dean, but he can't hear it the second time, either. Castiel holds up a finger to tell him to hold on as he walks over to the band and gestures to a microphone. One of the guitarists nods, so he takes the microphone and walks back over to Dean, holding it out for him to speak.
"I said, I don't know, man," Dean tells him with a slight smile. "You totally skipped me for the high five."
Castiel rolls his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. C'mon."
Castiel offers him a hand up, but Dean shakes his head and pushes himself up on stage himself. Castiel hands him the microphone, which he holds by his side and looks out at the crowd. He waves, and they all cheer again.
"Alright, guys. This is my friend, Dean Winchester," Castiel announces. "Also known as the best quarterback in the NFL." He can't back that up because he doesn't know crap about sports, but he'll go with it. The audience cheers, so there's that.
"You don't even watch sports," Dean reminds him. "How could you possibly know that?"
"Well, I've seen you play before, so I think I'm qualified enough to say that."
"It doesn't work that way, but sure, Cas. Let's go with that."
Everyone starts screaming, earning a confused look from Dean. He puts the microphone down and says something to Castiel, who can't hear it. He takes off half his headset and moves the microphone so it won't pick up their voices.
"What?" Castiel asks.
"Why are they so excited?" Dean asks loudly.
"The only person who calls me that is my mysterious ex boyfriend from high school,"
"Seriously?" he says in disbelief. "Just because I called you 'Cas'?"
He nods. "Yep. They can piece anything together, so watch what you say."
"Noted."
Castiel fixes his headset, then asks, "So, Dean, what should we sing today?"
"Doesn't matter to me, as long as I'm singing it with you."
A/N: The reason I just chapter spammed it because I feel like people miss Dean too much, so I just whipped up five and a half really long chapters in one day so I could get Dean back for you. It's basically 9 chapters though, word-count-wise. Plus, like, it's a Destiel fanfic. I kinda need Dean in the picture for that.
