Chapter 6
"Hey," Castiel greets the young woman at the front of the ropes course place. It's an outside one, which he thought was awesome, and it was easily his first choice.
"Hi," she replies. "I'm sorry, but we're closing in five minutes."
"I know. I have a favor to ask you. I don't know if you've heard of me, but I'm Castiel Novak —"
"You're Castiel Novak?" she repeats. "I thought you were just a lookalike. What are you doing in California? I thought you lived in New York. No, wait, the People's Choice Awards were here, so you're... I'm sorry, I'm rambling." She smiles sheepishly.
"That's fine," Castiel assures her. It's actually a good thing; if she knows him, she's more likely to help him out. "So, if you've seen my Twitter, I sorta accidentally agreed to doing a ropes course without a harness, so I was wondering if I could do that here? I wouldn't sue you guys if anything happened, and I'll fill out the form and all that."
"I'm not technically supposed to allow that..." she says slowly.
"I'll leave a donation?" Castiel suggests. "It'll just be a few minutes. Fifteen tops."
She sighs. "I guess... Just... Don't get hurt."
"I'll do my best," he assures her. "I've got to go get my friend to prove that I'm actually doing this. Be right back." He runs out to Dean, who is still chilling by the car in case it didn't work out. "It's a yes. Come on."
Castiel forcefully drags him to the room he was just in, where he signs the waver promising he won't sue if he gets hurt. Castiel walks over to the stairs that lead up to the course. Dean sighs from behind him.
"I swear to god, Castiel, if you fall..."
"I won't!" Castiel assures him as if he's much more confident than he really is. "Recording?"
"I'll start once you get to the top of the stairs," Dean replies. "Good luck."
Dean walks away to get a better view, and Castiel finishes climbing the stairs. Only now does he realize how high this is. If he falls from even the first level, he could break some bones, never mind the fourth and highest level. He could die if he fell from there. Well, probably not, but it's possible.
Castiel takes a deep breath and starts the first obstacle. It's basically a balance beam. Not bad. He does that one with ease. He makes it to the platform between obstacles and does the next one. Okay, that's not bad. Neither is the next one, or the next one. He manages to get across the entire first two levels, and he reaches the third one. He gets halfway through, feeling pretty confident by now. He climbs across the long rope ladder, his foot getting caught as he hops on the platform. He shakes it out of the rope loop. That wasn't too bad.
Next is like stepping stones; it's small pieces of wood attached by a single wire. Easy peasy. Castiel puts his foot on one, and only then does he realize how small and shaky they are. He steps on another, and another, and another, and —
He slips. In a panicked state, he throws his arms up, and his right hand catches the wire, digging into his fingers. He hangs from that hand, the left one unable to reach the wire. He does what feels like a one handed pull up, which is really freaking hard because the wire is digging into his fingers.
Finally, his other hand grabs the wire, and he can begins to pull himself up completely before he realizes he can't stand up on it again. He sighs to himself as he begins moving across the wire, his hands grabbing the wire only a couple inches ahead of himself at a time. Finally, he reaches the platform, and he pulls himself up like he's doing a pull up. He grabs the platform and pulls himself onto it, lying on his stomach before standing up quickly. Well, that was stressful. Oops.
The rest of the course he completes much more cautiously, finally returning to the ground what feels like less that five minutes later. As soon as he reaches the ground, Dean stops recording, running up to the boy.
"I thought you were gonna end up in the hospital again! Don't scare me like that!"
"Sorry? But you have to admit, that was pretty freaking awesome," Castiel replies with a grin.
Dean groan. "Cas!"
"What? It was fun!"
"Not for me," Dean mutters. "I swear to god, Cas, if you don't like this video and try it again..."
"I might try it again just for fun," Castiel replies with a grin.
Dean groans. "Please don't."
"Fine," Castiel agrees, but he doesn't make any promises. That was so much fun!
