Chapter 29

"Anna, aren't you going to eat something?" Michael asks after a few minutes of polite conversation with Cain, who doesn't seem half bad.

"I did," Anna reminds him, gesturing to her plate, still covered sauce as proof she got food.

"Barely."

"Cain and I shared a pizza at lunch," Anna tells him. "I'm not hungry anymore." She looks over at Cain, her expression unreadable to the others.

"No, you didn't," Claire says accusatively. "I saw Cain during lunch. He was getting math help."

Michael looks to Anna expectantly.
Shooting Claire a glare, she replies, "Then you must have been seeing things."

"I missed a day of school, so I picked up the work I missed," Cain says evenly. "It only took a minute."

It's clear Claire doesn't believe this, but she doesn't have a way to prove it, so she just says, "Sure, whatever." She doesn't seem defeated, but rather determined to prove him wrong eventually.

After another few minutes in which stuff happens but the author doesn't feel like going into any sort of detail about, the front door opens. Sam and Gabriel walk into view, and though Gabriel seems confused when he sees Cain, Sam clearly recognizes him. It seems that's mutual; Cain's gaze seems almost dangerous when meeting the older boy's.

"Sam," he says politely, but there's a hint of something Castiel can't place.
"Cain," Sam replies.

Cain looks over at the other boy. "And you must be Gabriel, then."

He nods slowly. "Mm hmm...?"

"That's my boyfriend, Cain," Anna tells him.

"Oh! Hi, Cain. Nice to meet you."

"You too," Cain replies. "And it's nice to see you again, Sam. School hasn't been the same without you." The way he says it makes it seem like there's more to that than the nice sentiment it appears as.

"Right..." Sam says awkwardly. "Well, I'm just gonna drop Gabe and go."

"No, you don't have to go," Gabriel protests. "You can stay and hang out with the fam."

"No one says fam anymore," Sam tells him.

"Well, my fam says fam," Gabriel replies. "Right, fam?"

Castiel shakes his heads and Anna rolls her eyes.

Lucifer, the childish one of the group, says, "No, who says fam?" You probably thought he was going to say yes because he's Lucifer. You learn something new everyday, huh? "But I agree that we need Sabriel," he adds. "Sam, you're not allowed to leave."

"I'll leave if I damn well feel like it," Sam replies, but doesn't make a move to go.

"You've been spending too much time with Dean," Gabriel says with a laugh.

"Definitely," he agrees.

"What a perfect excuse to stay here!" Lucifer says with a grin.

"I really should go home," Sam protests.

Lucifer stands up and walk over to him. Sam just watches, confused, until Lucifer grabs his wrist. "There. Now you can't leave."

Sam rolls his eyes and pulls his arm away, and Lucifer's grip breaks immediately. Lucifer pouts, and Sam just laughs.

Gabriel jokingly glares at his brother. "Luci, I'm the only one allowed to put Sam in handcuffs," he says with a suggestive smirk.

Everyone reacts at the same time.

"I ship it," Lucifer whispers.

Castiel just laughs, Sam smacks his boyfriend on the shoulder, Claire rolls her eyes but wears an amused smile, and Anna facepalms, seeming understandably embarrassed by her family. Things were going so well before Gabriel showed up. Who would have thought Lucifer would be able to keep it together when Gabriel couldn't?

But Cain doesn't seem to think they're stupid or annoying; he laughed with the rest of them. It wasn't an uncomfortable I-don't-want-to-be-the-only-one-not-laughing laugh, but like it was a friend who said it and not his girlfriend's brother. Maybe Anna shouldn't have worried so much; Cain seems to be fitting in quite well here.
