Chapter 122
"Cas," Dean whines that afternoon. "Get off your phone."
"I can't," Castiel replies. "I'm chatting with people on Instagram."
"Fans?" Dean guesses.
"Stans," Castiel replies. "I think having almost a thousand followers on a fan page earns you the title of stan, not just fan."
"Do they know it's you?" Dean asks.
"Nope," Castiel replies. "We're talking about what's up with basically everything I do, and if they knew it was me, they wouldn't say anything negative."
"You're like an undercover agent," Dean jokes.
He sits down next to Castiel to watch his spy movie life, so he scrolls to the top to show Dean the whole conversation.
It was the other account that initiated the conversation by saying, "Thanks for the spam!"
Castiel had replied, "NP. Thanks for having an awesome account that I could spam."
"Awww, thank you! My name's Jenna, btw."
"Nice to meet ya, Jenna. I'm Cassius."
"Who the fuck is Cassius?" Dean asks him.
"The guy from Julius Caesar who started the whole conspiracy to kill him," Castiel replies.
"Why would you think of Julius Caesar when you're giving a fake name?" Dean asks, dumbfounded that he's that much of a nerd.
"Because Shakespeare, Dean. Shakespeare."
Dean chuckles. "My god, you're weird."
"I know," Castiel replies proudly.
They turn their attention back to Instagram, where Jenna said, "Ooh, cool name!"
"I get that a lot lol. How long have you been a fan of Castiel?" It was weird to refer to himself in third person like that, but it's for a good cause. His desire to snoop around is a good cause, right?
"Five years and counting! Not quite from the beginning, but pretty close. How about you?"
That one was harder to answer. He's never actually been his own fan, but he might as well fake it. He decided to go with around the time Taylor Swift really became his friend.
"About four years now."
"Did Taylor Swift bring you to him?"
That one had surprised him, because it doesn't seem too transparent when he chose four years, but he decided to roll with it.
"Yeah, and thank god she did lol."
"XD."
Not wanting the conversation to end, he asked, "What's your favorite one of his songs?"
"Do unreleased songs count?"
"Yeah, sure. I'm sue I've heard 'em all anyway xD." Emphasis on "sure," because he knows this for a fact. Hell, he's the one that wrote them.
"I found a video of his performance in Sioux Falls last year when he just walked off, which sucked because that song was soooo gooood! You could really tell he was singing it from the heart, too, and it was just awesome omg. Have you seen it?"
He always asks people not to record those, but, per usual, people don't listen, so he definitely wasn't surprised to hear there's a video of that online somewhere.
"YESSS I WAS AT THAT CONCERT!" he replied, hoping he was coming off as a fangirl. And look, he didn't even have to lie! He really was at that concert!
"OMG SERIOUSLY YOU ACTUALLY GOT TO GO TO HIS SIOUX FALLS CONCERT?!?! I'M SO JEALOUS! TICKETS ALWAYS SELL OUT IN MINUTES AND I NEVER GET THEM IN TIME!"
"Ikr he needs more concerts there next year!" This was mostly to test the waters and see how people would feel about that.
"Did you hear that he might not be going on tour with his next album?"
"Might. He still will, right?" he said as if he even had the answer himself.
"Idk. I would've said that last year, but he's been acting so weird. He hasn't released an album in well over a year. He hasn't even put out any singles yet, or done any interviews in forever, and no one really sees him anymore, plus the social media blackout and how he never really tweets anymore and the only time we ever get to see him is from Dean. Idek what's going on there and I'm really getting nervous that he's not going to release anything for another year or so, because he's usually extra active on Twitter for weeks before he announces his new albums, and the odds of a tour are looking super low and ugh this stresses me out why won't he just talk to usssss?!?!"
This was kind of weird, seeing himself from an outsider's perspective. He never realized how active he is on Twitter before he announces his albums, but it sounds about right. He likes to make sure people are still excited for him to exist. But he does have a life, so not tweeting a lot now does make sense, whether people realize it or not — and it looks like not.
"Maybe he's just busy getting the album ready?" Castiel suggested, knowing it was a complete lie.
"Maybe... It would explain why Dean posted about him playing guitar. Maybe he was working on music and started being a dork instead. Hey have you seen Dean's new insta post? It's hilarious xD."
"Lol yeah xD."
"Honestly what would we do without Dean? No one else ever gives us Castiel updates. Even Lucifer hasn't posted about him lately."
"Well, he doesn't live with the rest of the Novaks anymore, right?" Castiel said as if he didn't already know that; this being the last thing he said before showing Dean the conversation. "That could be why Lucifer never posts about him."
"Yeah but he has to go back home, right? Even just once a week. Enough for Lucifer to post about him, at least. But maybe not. He doesn't really talk about his life with us anymore, so idrk."
That is kind of sad to see. He certainly tries to keep his fans involved. Ever since he was hacked and lost his social media, it hasn't been very easy, but he never really wanted to neglect his fans. He does owe them everything he has, after all.
"Maybe he'll start being active again." He has to add the maybe, but really, he means he will, even if it's pity activity.
"I wish but probably not. It's just been too long. I hate to think of it, but I think he might be done with us."
"What? No! He loves his fans! He wouldn't leave us like that!"
"His lack of social media presence says otherwise. But maybe you're right. Maybe he'll be coming back soon. Hey, I have to go, but talk later?"
As much as he doesn't want this Jenna girl to leave so he can learn more about how people see him, he reluctantly says goodbye before putting his phone away and turning to his boyfriend.
"So how was that?" Dean asks. "You upset about not having a public Instagram account yet?"
Castiel sighs. "Yeah, kind of. But I guess it's more that I'm upset that I haven't really been around. I mean, she actually thinks I'm done with my fans, which couldn't be more wrong."
"Then prove it," Dean replies. "Give them something. An album, a single, an Instagram. Hell, give them the name of your album, and they'll be happy, but give them something."
Castiel nods slowly, thinking. "Yeah... I could give them an album, and I could give them answers. People pick apart all my songs anyway. That can give them the answers they all want if I play it right." He grabs his guitar and sing notebook and sits down on the couch. "Alright, let's do this."
