Chapter 121
Castiel actually does get a lot done in those four hours Dean spends in bed. It's just not really what he wanted to get done. He finished that book he was writing in Wattpad, not that he's going to publish it. It'll just stay in his drafts; the one completed but unpublished book.
Then he tried to write a new song, which he hasn't done in probably a week, and that wasn't happening. He tried, but he just couldn't find the motivation, so he just sat there for a while in silence.
Eventually, he just gave up and started playing other people's songs instead. Pumped Up Kicks, Firework, Walk This Way, Bitch Better Have My Money — the classics.
"I'm half expecting you to start singing Beyoncé," Dean jokes from behind him.
Without acknowledging his existence, Castiel spontaneously starts singing, "All the single ladies, all the sin—"
"But you're not single or a lady," Dean reminds him.
"Oh, true," Castiel agrees, then modifies it while completely fibbing the guitar chords, "All the taken fellas, all the taken fellas, all —"
"You ruined it," Dean tells him. "You completely ruined the song. I hope you're proud of yourself."
"Hey, no one can ruin Beyoncé," Castiel says. "She's beyond that."
"Wow, fangirl much?" Dean asks teasingly.
"If you don't fangirl over Beyoncé, there is something wrong with you."
Dean laughs. "I'm so posting that."
Castiel finally looks over his shoulder to see Dean in the doorway, his cell phone in his hand. Castiel lays his guitar on the floor, the strings vibrating loudly, and crawls over to his boyfriend.
"How much of that did you get?" he asks, because he has no doubt that if he puts any of it online, he will put all of it up.
"A lot," Dean replies. "I put you singing Bitch Better Have My Money on my Instagram story because it was too funny not to share with the world."
"You're blessing the football fans' ears with that," Castiel jokes.
"I'm pretty sure most of my followers just want pictures of you now that you don't have an Instagram," Dean tells him. "I'm pretty much the only source of Cas pictures they've got, short of random people that see you on the street."
"They'll survive," Castiel replies dismissively. He's definitely in no hurry to make any more social media accounts. It's bad enough reading tweets about him. He doesn't need to fuel that any more by giving people more places to bash him.
"Yeah, but the fans won't," Dean replies. "They need new pictures. I see people begging me for them every time I check Twitter."
Castiel shrugs. "Too bad, so sad." He pauses, then grins as an idea comes to him. "I should make a 'fan' account and post pictures from online and pictures I'm taking and see how long it takes for people to catch on."
"How are you going to get people to find your account, though?" Dean asks.
"The hard way," he replies. "Following accounts, liking a bunch of posts, and commenting a lot."
Dean chuckles and claps his boyfriend on the back. "Good luck with that, then."
"Thanks. I'm gonna need it."
Castiel pulls out his phone and downloads Instagram again. He immediately goes to name his account @MishaCollins, just like his Twitter, but that's already taken, as is @Misha, so he has to think of a more fan-based name. Finally, after many repeatedly failed attempts, he settles on @StanningMishaCollins. For a description, he puts, "I know so much about Castiel Novak that I practically am him." Not very subtle, but subtlety is overrated, anyway.
He searches his name on google and saves a bunch of pictures, posting them with various hashtags related to him and his music and captions just containing lyrics to his songs. He ends up copy and pasting the tags eventually, because he's too lazy to retype them.
Once he's posted 25 times, he decides he has enough posts to go follow people and hopefully have them follow back. He starts off by following the Novak and Winchester families; always his first priority.
He's surprised to see that Samandriel has more Instagram followers than Anna by almost ten thousand, even though she posts perfect selfies almost daily, and Samandriel posts maybe once every week, and they're mostly pictures of what he's been up to, and a lot of them don't actually have him in them at all. Michael has the fewest followers, probably because in the last eight years, he has posted twelve pictures. Not big on social media, clearly.
He hasn't seen Gabriel's Instagram in a while, but he's not surprised to see that it's entirely pictures of Sam or both of them, and Sam's Instagram is the same with him. Granted, Sam has carefully stayed out of public eye, so there aren't any pictures of Sam's face on Gabriel's account, or vice versa. They're still adorably coupley without face reveals, though, and it's probably the cutest thing there is.
Castiel scrolls through Dean's Instagram, not surprised to see most of his posts are with them both. The most recent is Castiel's not-so-beautiful parody of Beyoncé's Single Ladies without a caption. Castiel gives it a like and scrolls through the comments on it, giving each of them a like to get attention because he's a self proclaimed attention whore.
"YESSS CASTIEL #SLAY!"
"What would we do without this weirdo?"
"I bet the reason he hasn't put out another album is because he's working on more quality songs just like that one xD"
"#BringCastielBackToInstagram2023"
"It's posts like this that give me life."
"Only Castiel can make me fangirl over a football player's posts like this."
"CASTIEL AND BEYONCÉ COLLAB I CALL IT!!!"
"I miss Mishaaaaaaaa!!!"
"'If you don't fangirl over Beyoncé, there is something wrong with you.' Boi tru!"
"Remember when Castiel used to be able to post these things on his own account instead? :("
"OH MY GAWDDDD CASTIEL!!!"
"Why you like this Castiel? XD"
"I was never a Castiel Novak fan 'til Winchester started posting things like this."
"*Beyhive swarms in* We have found ourselves a King Bee."
"But why no Taylor Swift songs?"
"Idc if you don't like his music. You can't deny that Castiel Novak is the most precious person on this planet."
Castiel looks over at Dean and asks, "Are people usually this nice to me here?"
Dean nods. "Yeah, pretty much. A few bad apples, but for the most part, it's a pretty pro-Cas crowd."
"That's awesome," Castiel replies. "And they're not all fan accounts like they usually are on Twitter."
Dean chuckles. "Crazy, right?"
"Yeah, it really is," he says. "I should check your Instagram more often."
"Hey, check my story."
"A'ight, hold on." Castiel leaves the overwhelmingly positive comments to look at Dean's story, which has four parts. The first is Castiel singing "Pumped Up Kicks," then The Bishop's "River," then Lorde's darker version of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," and the last one is "Bitch Better Have My Money," proving that Dean was standing there for a while.
"I'm feeding the people the music they all miss," Dean explains. "Even if they aren't original songs."
"Well, hopefully that'll hold them over until I can actually get the motivation to write something," Castiel replies with a shrug.
"Your fans would be so mad if they knew you haven't even started your new album yet."
"Which is why they don't know," Castiel replies. "I don't know. I'll get something down soon. But for now, Instagram."
He follows a few celebrities he likes — Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Jody Mills, Shawn Mendes, Harry Styles, et cetera — and then turns his attention to fan accounts. He goes through and likes at least fifteen posts of each account he follows, enjoying the captions he finds.
"If it wasn't for his bf, I would have thought Castiel was dead by now. He's been MIA for too long."
"My mom took away my phone for an hour because I was blasting Castiel's last album as loud as my speakers would let me because I thought I was home alone and now that I have it back in scared to do that again... But imma do it anyway. #thuglife"
"Castiel makes me question my homosexuality."
"Rewatching old interviews and HE WAS SO CUTE AND AWKWARD WHEN HE WAS MY AGE!"
"Perdition started playing at the pep rally today and I screamed the lyrics and one of the football players tried to smack me."
These captions are more fun to read than any of the tweets he gets, and there's never anything bad about him here. He should have done this Instagram thing sooner, because this is great.
After an hour, he's following 74 people and has 28 followers. Well, that was easy. Maybe Instagram is his calling, after all.
