Below the Overhang

"What's the problem Gaster?" Undyne asked, her voice tight. She had stood up and was slowly edging in front of me.

He fingered the knife, his white, bony fingers a sharp contrast against the black handle. He glanced back at G and said nothing.

Undyne's eyes narrowed, her body tensing tightly. Alphys was sitting behind me, shivering. I bit my lip, my eyes lingering on G before glancing back up at Gaster. He glared at me for a moment before turning his attention to Undyne.

His hand tightened on the handle and that's when I noticed it. There were flecks of blood on Gaster's fingers. He pulled his hand back into his sleeve. He knew I saw it.

"Gaster," Undyne said slowly, lowering herself into a fighting position, "What is the problem?"

Finally, his grip on the knife loosened. "There are search parties looking for us in the main halls," Gaster said, his voice quiet and dark. "I came across three of them but there must be more." His voice became softer, "One of them spotted me." He glanced down at his hidden hand.

Undyne nodded understandingly. "Give me the knife Gaster."

He nodded compliantly. He swung the blade up. I gasped but all he did was flip the blade over, holding out the handle's end to Undyne. I sighed with relief but it was short lived when I caught Gaster smirking at me.

"How big are the parties?" Undyne asked him, diverting his attention.

"Five was the smallest I saw."

"Monsters or humans?"

"Mostly monsters. Boss ones especially."

"Huh. I didn't think Don would give up his protective services," Undyne said chuckling.

Gaster remained serious. He just shrugged and moved to the far corner, opening up something to eat.

Undyne looked at the bag of food and then at me. "Hungry?" she asked. I nodded, relieved that there hadn't been a fight. "Alright then...how does banana chips and jerky sound?"

I smiled, "Like the best meal I've ever had."
Undyne laughed and brought some food over. Undyne, Alphys, and I ate together in silence. For an hour or so everything was quite and still. After eating, Undyne and Alphys fell asleep.

Only Gaster and I were left awake. I kept flicking nervous glances at him but he never addressed me. The only time he bothered to look at me was when I got up to sit closer to G.

Seeing Undyne and Alphys again was wonderful but G had become a source of comfort and safety they couldn't provide.

Gaster glared at me with dark eyes. I stared back innocently, trying to prove I had no ill intentions but that only made him angrier.

I leaned against the wall and felt a tired pressure build behind my eyes but I was too scared to close them.

After a while G shifted next to me. Slowly, he sat up and rubbed his skull, as if he had a headache.

"Hey," I whispered. He flinched but looked up at me with a small smile. I passed him some jerky and water. He moved closer to me, pressing his leg against mine. He didn't look happy though. There was a thoughtful frown on his face and he was resting his skull against the damp wall. His eyes landed on Gaster and his frown turned into a scowl and his mood shifted.

Darkly he glared at Gaster. "What are you looking at?" he snapped, anger laced into his gravely voice.

"You and her," Gaster replied, soft and smooth. The anger was less evident in his voice but it was there.

G's eyes narrowed into slits; Gaster looked away. I nudged him with my shoulder. 'You okay?' I mouthed. He sighed, placing his hand on my thigh, giving me a comforting squeeze.

I tried to smile but it faltered. Leaning my head against the wall, I closed my tired eyes.

Angry voices shouted to each other, coordinated and sure. "They have to be around here!" "This is where Jackson saw them go!" "What's up there?" My eyes shot open.

I was where I fell asleep, my body stiff and full of knots. Everyone else was hunkered down in the front area of the overhang. They were stiff and still in the shadows, watching the people below us.

I slid down low and sidled up to G. He flicked a glance at me then back at those below us. I frowned as I watched the extensive search parties below us, biting my lip unhappily.

There were separate groups of at least five equipped with flashlights and weapons. I spotted some well know boss monsters and dangerous criminals. They were all well fueled, awake, and excited, like cats when they're finally about to kill their prey.

Many cast suspicious looks at the overhang but no one pursed on it. They shouted loudly to each other, intent and serious. I watched as they filtered carefully through each cell one by one, overlooking nothing, except the overhang that is. Tensely, we all crouched by one another, never taking our eyes off of the criminals below us except to duck from prying eyes.

Slowly the groups pushed forward to the rest of the prison, leaving behind the overhang untouched. I fell back against the wall in despair.

No one spoke until the last of the searchers' noises had long past and given up to cold silence. Then G turned on Undyne and Gaster, seething. "You led them right to us," he hissed, standing up.

"Who?" Gaster said, standing up as well, an amused smirk on his face. "You and Frisk?" I blushed and looked away.

G took a step forward, his fist curled tight. Gaster's irises began to glow. Undyne stepped between them.

"This isn't going to help boys," she said, her voice slightly raised.

"Oh yeah? And what is going to help? Certainly not you and Alphys!" G yelled. "What if they come back and search up here?"

"Then we'll leave," Gaster said.

"And go where? Warden? Huh?" G snapped.

"I don't know! Why don't we just go to Don! He is your friend isn't he?" Gaster replied snarkily. I knew he what he was poking at and it was dangerous. G's hand was swallowed by a deep, golden flame. He took a step forward.

"You can't kill him Sans! We need his help," Undyne said trying to get between him and Gaster.

"You know what Undyne? We wouldn't be in this mess if you and King of the prison had been more careful. You led those idiots right to us!"

"You think this is my fault!" Undyne screeched.

All three of them began to scream at each other unintelligibly. I looked out at the prison, trying to block out their fight.

My eyes widened when I saw him. A human stood beneath the overhang, staring right up at the three fighting with each other. A large smirk played across his face and his hands held tight to the crude weapon in his hands. He swept over the overhand and noticed me looking at him. His eyes widened and he took off.

"G!" I said urgently but he didn't hear me. I stood up, "G!" I yelled but Gaster and Undyne's voices overpowered me.

I took a deep breath, letting determination flood through me. "G!" I bellowed.

All three turned around in shock but recovered quickly. "What?" G yelled at me.

I winced but didn't let it get to me. Pointed down to where the man had previously stood, I explained quickly, "Some one saw us, a human. He's running for the groups now!"

G and Gaster looked at each other and teleported immediately.

I looked at Undyne, her face was a mixture of shock and anger. She crossed her arms and stomped over to where Alphys had safely retreated to behind the boxes.

I sighed and slid down the wall, pulling my knees to my chest. I was almost glad the man had interrupted, otherwise their fight might of gotten violent.

Seconds ticked by, it was almost a full minute before G and Gaster came back, the two of them restraining a young, struggling man between them. "Shut up," G snapped, punching him in the temple. The man immediately conked out.

G looked at me. I couldn't read his face. "Tie him up," G ordered Gaster and then he retreated, alone, to the far corner. He sat in the dark and watched stonily as Gaster did as he was told.
