Chapter 29- "Your sister kicks harder than a fucking kangaroo."

Dedicated to: @TheDivergentMaze

I frowned at Harper as I curled up in the plane seat near the window, Jenna, who was reading, next to me and Harper on the other side of her.

"Why are you so happy?" I grumbled. Let's just say it was that time of the month, and I was not in a good mood.

Harper smirked cheekily. "Because by tomorrow my plan to win you back is going to commence, because we'll be in California again. By the way, I'll pick you up from your house tomorrow. Then you'll forgive me, of course. I mean, how can you not? You'll be getting all six feet, two inches of the real deal." He motioned to his body cockily.

"Shut up, Andrews," I groaned, burying my face into one of the airplane pillows. "I highly doubt I will forgive you, anyways."

"Bullshit, baby doll, you love me."

I winced at that, because he had no idea just how true that was.

Harper seemed to notice my discomfort. "Shoot, I'm sorry, Noelle. I didn't mean to say that- "

"Shut up, Harper, before I stab you with Florence's eyeliner."

He shut up.

I smiled, satisfied, before turning to Jenna. "What are you reading?" I asked. She looked up at me, her green eyes glinting brightly. "The Lightening Thief!" She exclaimed excitedly.

Yes!

"I'm proud of you, Jenna," I nodded in approval and patted her on the head. "I've taught you well."

I saw Harper smile gently at me from the corner of my eye, and my heart sped up. I turned away before he could see the blush growing on my cheeks.

I may be annoyed at the idiot, but that doesn't mean I'm any less in love with him.

I found that I was slowly getting used to saying that. I love Harper. I admit, it was pretty terrifying at first, but I was adapting. Admitting to yourself that you love someone- oh my gods. I hope all the terror was worth it in the end.

I leaned my head against the wall of the plane, watching as we went through clouds, the view a boring puff of white. I didn't know what to do- I had already finished my book and I wasn't in the mood to watch a movie.

On instinct, I glanced over at Harper, before immediately stopping in my tracks, my mouth falling open easily. He was reading, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, to be exact, and on his face, resting on his nose, was a pair of black Ray-Ban glasses similar to my own, but not quite.

He looked absolutely adorable in the glasses, his eyebrows furrowed cutely, focusing on the book intently, and the urge to hop over Jenna and kiss him wildly and run my hands through his feather soft hair was flaming.

Just then, an air hostess walked by with glasses of water. She smiled, passing them over to us.

"Hello," she cooed to Jenna as she handed her water.

"Hi. Thank you," Jenna grinned back.

"Are you enjoying the plane ride?" The air hostess pursued. Jenna nodded eagerly. The air hostess, who's name tag read 'Sadie' smiled at Harper and I.

"Your child is very cute." Sadie said.

I choked on the water I was drinking, beating my chest like a rabid gorilla.

"We're not- "

"- Married." Harper finished. I blushed bright red. Harper smirked at me a little but didn't say anything. Sadie quickly apologized, said bye to Jenna and moved on.

"So... " Harper sniggered, wiggling his eyebrows. "How you doing, wife?"

I groaned and slapped his arm, curling up and facing Harper. "So what are you planning on doing to make me forgive you?"

"That's a secret, baby doll," Harper smirked, running a hand through his hair, immediately making me pay attention to his glasses again. "You'll see tomorrow." He frowned for a second.

"I really want to sit next to you."

My heart melted a little and I flushed. "Harper- "

"Jenna, could I sit there, please?" He cut me off.

No, Jenna. No, Jenna. Please, Jenna.

Jenna gave Harper a weird look but switched with him anyways. I frowned and shuffled away from Harper. Hurt flashed in his eyes, but he did not react.

"Why do you want to sit next to me?" I asked, cautiously.

"What do you think, baby doll? Because I like- " Harper paused, almost acting as if he was regaining his composure. "- Because I like being with you."

My heart fluttered a little as I stared at him, and I could barely see the pink lightly tilting his cheeks. As soon as his green eyes caught mine, he quickly turned away, facing his TV.

Well that was weird.

I quickly turned to my TV as well, turning on The Hunger Games immediately, but for the first time in my life- I couldn't concentrate- thoughts of Harper swarming my mind.

-------------------------

Harper's POV:

I groaned as I flung myself onto my bed, exhausted.

We had just arrived from the airport and we reached home at three in the morning, and my limbs felt sore and limp and my brain was ready to just shut down.

Like after I kissed Noelle.

I groaned again at the memory, trying to push it out of my mind, slamming my head into the pillow beneath me. I was such an idiot- kissing her. I took her first kiss- when she didn't even like me.

Well fucking done, Andrews.

Maybe she does like you? After all, she asked you to kiss you.

I laughed dryly to myself. Ha, fucking, ha. Sure she likes you.

You wish.

It was just a spur of the moment thing.

Just at that moment, my phone rang. Without bothering to check who was calling, I clicked the green button.

"Dude, go away, it's three am- "

"Is that how you treat your best friend?" Bethany's high-pitched voice drawled. I smiled a little and my heart softened.

"Hey. Why are you calling me at three in the morning, Beth?"

"Well, Harps," Bethany said. I smiled a little at the nickname I had missed from when we were kids. "I just wanted to see if you had reached home yet. I guess you probably have."

I smiled, laying back on my mattress. "Yeah, I have."

I heard her hum. "Do you want to go somewhere together tomorrow? Movies or something? Just like in Dallas, maybe."

"That would be cool," I answered, before frowning. "Actually- I can't. I have to take Noelle out tomorrow." I paused again. "Actually, can she come as well?"

I could almost sense Bethany's frown. That was a stupid question. It was obvious that Bethany didn't like Noelle. On that day at the restaurant, Bethany had done nothing but smile in that sarcastic way at Noelle.

"Um, that would be great," Bethany coughed. "I just- I wanted it to be just the two of us for a change."

I sighed. However much I like Bethany, I liked Noelle too.

"Beth, it's always us."

"No, it isn't, Harper. Not since you left."

"Well, maybe because you live in a different state." I fiercely replied. She was starting to irritate me now- by this point I was clenching my fists.

"Yeah, but you never called me- like you promised me. It's all because of that girl, isn't it?" Bethany shot back. My whole facade fell down, anger, frustration, irritation with my best female friend. I winced.

It was, wasn't it?

Shockingly obvious truth here.

"Fine," I sighed to Bethany. I'd just have to pick up Noelle a bit later.

"Good," she replied. "I'll meet you at nine tomorrow morning. Come pick me up."

Nine in the fucking morning? Is she shitting me? That's so early and I have freaking jet lag from Japan!

Before I could protest, Bethany hung up. I ran my hand through my hair in frustration and sat up from my bed. I quickly looked over to see Noelle, looking absolutely exhausted in her special Hello Kitty tank top and sweat pants her red hair a mess after being in a ponytail for the entire day.

She wasn't any less shockingly beautiful.

Noelle was weird- in the best way possible. She wasn't one of those 'desperate-to-be-popular' people, she did care what people thought of her, though. She was beautiful in this strange way that stopped my breath every time she walks by, when she talks to me, hell, she nearly kills me when she touches me.

What really saddened me was Noelle's insecurities, that always seem to haunt her. Constantly looking around to check if someone is watching her before she does something, trying to stay out of the spotlight. Even on her birthday, in the jacuzzi or even at the beach, she couldn't even wear a bikini because she was so ashamed of her body.

Someone so beautiful shouldn't feel that way, in my opinion.

She looked up through her window, her hazel eyes locking with mine, her eyelashes casting shadows on her cheeks. Her face crumpled for one, horrifying second, before returning back to normal. She gave me a little smile that made my heart stop before waving at me.

Oh, shut up, Andrews. You sound like fucking Edward Cullen again. Jeez, get your man back on. Starting right now.

Nevertheless, I gave her a little wave back.

Fine. Starting from tomorrow.

--------------------------

"Hey, Beth," I greeted Bethany as she stepped out of her new house, wearing a bright yellow dress and red heels.

I inwardly wolf whistled.

"Hey, Harps," she winked- flirtatiously? "Ready to go?"

I nodded, running a hand through my hair, exhausted. "Let's go."

We got into the car- my mom's car because mine was still in repair, and Bethany immediately slipped in one of her Selena Gomez CD's that she used to keep in here into the car. Immediately, one of Selena's songs started playing and Bethany hummed.

I frowned slightly. I had never like Selena Gomez.

If Noelle were here, we would be singing our lungs out to Fall Out Boy.

"So do you like California?" I asked Bethany. She nodded. "Mhmm. It's cool. I'll miss Marco and stuff, though." She then took a magazine out of her bag and began to read it.

Rude.

I tried to ignore it, and we finally pulled up to the cinema. I got out of the car, but Bethany stayed inside. I looked at her, confused, and she glared at me back, obviously expecting something.

Oh.

I leaned forward to awkwardly open her door for her.

Bethany smiled at me sweetly, before exiting the car going through the doors of the cinema. I awkwardly followed. The air was cooler inside, and Bethany was already by the ticket counter as I slipped through the glass doors. Immediately, my eyes caught on a Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix poster on the wall and I grinned. It came out years ago, but I still hadn't seen it. Walking up to Bethany, laying my hand on her shoulder.

"Beth, do you want to watch- "

"Harps, let's watch The DUFF!"

"Actually, can we watch- "

"Two tickets for The DUFF, please." Bethany interrupted. I sighed and pulled out my wallet to pay for the tickets.

No fucking comment.

Ten minutes later, we were in the movie hall, and the movie was starting. I sat awkwardly next to Bethany as it began to play.

Somehow, this time didn't feel like all the others back in Dallas.

I was in utter boredom until near the end of the movie, before Bethany finally began to speak.

"Harper?" she whispered through the dim light. I immediately looked over at her, relieved to have something to quench the dullness. "Yeah?"

She awkwardly pulled at the end of her hair, and the action was so Noelle that I yearned to have her next to me.

Why the fuck are you acting like this?

"I have something to tell you." She began.

No shit, Sherlock.

"It's just- you see- " I raised an eyebrow.

"Harper- I like you." She finally blurted out.

She what?

I've had plenty of girls tell me that they've liked me before, even loved me, but without knowing me properly, just for my good looks. But Bethany? She's known me for my whole life.

"What?" I gaped. She sighed.

"You have to make this even harder for me, don't you? Well, Harper, I like you."

I stared at her in shock. Finally, I willed myself to speak.

"Beth- " I sighed. "I'm really sorry but I don't like you in that way."

Bethany winced but nodded in understanding. "I get it. It's fine. Let's just forget about this then, okay? I don't want to ruin our friendship."

I nodded blindly, before turning back to the screen, and suddenly, the movie was so much more interesting.

--------------------------

"I liked you ever since that heart-stopping moment when you dropped me off at the dance in Grade 7," Bethany sighed dreamily. "You looked so hot that night."

I resisted the urge to give her a weird look as I drove her home. It was already one, and I was meant to pick Noelle up an hour ago. I tried to call her, but she wasn't picking up.

"And I remember, you took my hand and opened the car door for me- " Bethany continued.

I though we weren't going to talk about this?

Frankly, it was making me very uncomfortable. And inflating my ego, nevertheless.

I tried to block Bethany out for the rest of the ride, only pausing to listen to nod at her questions, or give her a quick shake of the head. I greedily eyed a blonde on the pavement of the street I was driving on, who was wearing barely anything.

Hey- I'm a guy.

But I knew if Noelle were here, I wouldn't notice anyone else because I'd only be staring at her.

Finally, we reached Bethany's house. I quickly bid her goodbye, opened the door for her, and sped off to Noelle's house, now realising I was over an hour late.

I had to get her to forgive me for taking her first kiss, and showing up late to a- is it a date?- was not the smartest of ideas if I didn't want my balls chopped off by Emma, Samara and Florence.

Fuck me.

---------------------------

Noelle's POV:

Harper freaking Andrews.

Always messing with my heart.

I had been waiting for exactly an hour and forty-six minutes, and he still wasn't here. I was actually looking forward to this.

Don't blame me, I'm in love with the guy.

"I swear, I will chop off his balls," Florence growled, cracking her knuckles menacingly. She had come out to sit next to me on the porch, waiting, after about half an hour, and by the time the hour was up, she was pacing the grass in her Jimmy Choo heels.

I was dressed at my best then, after Emma was insisting it was a date. I was wearing a midnight blue dress that reached just above my knees, and I sported a pair of black flats. Thankfully, I had got away with leaving my hair just as it was.

Finally, two minutes later, Maggie's car pulled into my driveway and a frantic Harper rushed out. His eyes looked tired and his hair was a mess, indicating he had been running his hands through his hair- in frustration, most likely. He couldn't even get two words out, before Florence stood up and kicked him in- um, his guy parts.

"Florence!" I cried.

"That's for standing up my sister," Florence hissed in his ear, before leaping into the house with a flourish. Once she was gone, I awkwardly peered down at Harper, who was lying on the ground, cupping his groin.

"Are you all right?" I squeaked.

He groaned, before hesitantly standing up. "You're sister kicks harder than a fucking kangaroo." He finally said.

I raised an eyebrow. "And you've been kicked by a kangaroo?"

He playfully glared at me, before straightening up. "Let's go- "

"Woah, woah, woah," I cut in. "You still haven't told me why you're late."

Harper grinned feebly. "The Empire State Building fell on my bed so I had to evacuate?"

"Very funny."

"Fine," he sighed. "I was out. With Bethany."

My mood immediately darkened, but I tried not to show it. "Really?" I asked casually. "Fine. Why didn't you arrive on time, then?"

Harper grimaced. "We were watching a movie. Then we grabbed lunch."

"And why did you forget about me?"

"I called you, but you didn't pick up!" Harper protested. I glared at him.

I'm warning you.

"I mean- " Harper quickly put on a fake smile. "I'm really sorry for being a terrible person and standing you up, Noelle. I promise it won't happen again."

"Good." I smiled sweetly.

Harper frowned. "I swear, Florence and Emma are definitely influencing you."

"Just a little is okay," I shrugged. "I'm still me."

Harper smirked knowingly to himself that had me wonder what he was thinking about. "That, you are."
