Chapter twenty three
( see EyesOfAmethyst for her side of the story!)
"Amethyst, your not going in, that's final." Chase said desperately. So after the whole mining discussion, Chase gave me a day to talk things over with other miners and find out exactly what I have to do. The general idea seemed simple enough. Stay on the mined path, don't wander off, go to the diamonds, mine them, and come back. Pft. As if it'd be that easy. When Amethyst found out about my little mining adventure, she got all hyped and decided she wanted to join. I protested against it, but Amethyst being Amethyst, she followed me to the mine shaft, and announced that she was dead set on coming with me. Thankfully Chase was there and he was dead set against it. Yyeeeeaaaahhhhh. . . Amethyst wasn't taking it to well. "I AM GOING!!" She yelled angrily, stamping her foot. "You can't tell me what to do! You don't control me!" Some of the burly miners cringed when they heard her. Even they weren't willing to step up to her. When she got like this a lot of people don't. Thankfully I wasn't one of those people.
"Your not going," I say, crossing my arms. "I don't care if you throw a temper tantrum, you are NOT going in." Amethyst's cheeks grew red, infuriated. "Temper tantrum?!" She shrieked. "Temper tantrum?!? You listen here Aria, I am every bit as strong as you, so don't you dare stand there and be all high and mighty!" I grit my teeth and glared at her. I don't care if she gets mad at me. She could scream and yell and complain all she wants but I'm not going to let her go into that. . . Death trap. I don't wanna go in either. But if I don't then three girls will have to go instead. I can't let that happen. Besides, I'd rather Amethyst be mad at me then risk getting covered in rocks and killed. "I'm not acting high and mighty," I grumbled, putting a hand on my hip. "I'm seeing common sense. Your not even wearing proper clothes for this!" I gesture to her pretty dress and white tights. Normally Amethyst didn't wear dresses, but ever since she came here, dresses just seemed to throw themselves at her. She huffed and balled her fists. "So?! I can change!" I groan and gave palm. That's not the point! I don't want her going in there! If she goes in there, I don't know if I can protect her.
"Just stay here Amethyst. Please." Her eyes softened slightly but then hardened. "I can help Aria! Just let me come!" I sigh and rub my head, thinking hard. Then something clicked. "Fine," I said in a tired voice. "Go get pants on and tie up your hair. You can come." "What?!" Chase exclaimed, shocked. She brightened immediately. "Yes!" She squealed, fist pumping the air. "Yes yes yes, I knew you'd let me! I'll be right back!" She turned and zoomed off towards Dixie's house, grinning triumphantly. "Are you nuts?!" Chase demanded, storming over to my side. "Are you CRAZY?! She can't go in there!" "Don't yell at me," I snap at him angrily. I go over to the mine opening and heave up a pickaxe. It was heavy. I don't know if I could work with this for very long but I'll have to try. "I'm going in Chase," I turn to him. "Don't let her come after me. I'll be out soon. And if not, send the rescue brigade, cause if I die in there I'll haunt you from the grave."
This sucks this sucks this sucks, I think as I tromp deeper and deeper into the mine, the air getting humid. Torches sputtered weakly in their holders, illuminating the way. Every so often another path would appear, leading towards a darker part of the mine. I try my best to ignore them, continuing down the paths most brightly lit. Sooner then expected, I run into a dead end. Sparkling blue rocks studded the gravel around it, glinting in the light. Ok diamonds, I lift the pickaxe and swing it a few times to gain momentum. Prepare to be mined! With one more swing, I swiftly embedded the sharp end of the pick into the rock. Yanking it out, I repeat the motions, over and over again. Sweat dampened my clothes and began dripping off my face. Geez this was hard! I swear to God, Chase better give me free food for the next month or else this pickaxe will find itself in someone's skull. Finally after what seemed like hours, a diamond popped out of it's place in the wall and fell to the floor. I sink to the ground in relief, breathing heavily. Great! One down two to go. Ugh. . . Why did I agree to this? I stuff the glittery rock into my pocket, pull out my water bottle, and take a few deep swallows. Sighing, I tucked my water bottle back into my belt, get up, and continue mining. Chink! Chink! Chink! Chink! Chink! I found a rhythm in my work, making the job a little less taxing. Three hours (and six breaks) later, I began to head back, three diamonds in my pocket.
Ah. . . Am's gonna be mad at me. Mmh. Maybe I can make her some cookies as an apology. She likes cookies. Mmmm. Food. Should I make double chocolate chunk cookies or sugar cookies? Or both? Probably both. I should also probably make some cake as well. She was REALLY pissed. I bite my lip. She'll forgive me. I know that much. But it still doesn't make me happy that she's angry at me. It gives me anxiety just thinking about it. Hhhiiiiisssssssss. I pause. The freak? Hhiiiissss hissss. What in the freaking hell is that? Aw hell no, is there some kinda snake thing in here!!? I frantically turn around and come face to face with something I didn't even know existed outside of its block world. A creeper.
