Doves
"So--you siced your mom on me, huh?"
I twist around from where I'm playing a video game. Orion is standing by the stairs, arms crossed, looking amused. His eyes flick to the TV. "You just died."
I sigh and shut off the game. I then get up and walk over to him, pulling him into a hug. He hugs me back and when we stop his serendipitous smile greets me.
"What was that for?"
"Because I love you."
"I love you too, Tris."
I lead him over to the couch and we sit. "I didn't really sic her on you. I merely told her she had to have an adult conversation with you or she was on the next flight back to Texas."
Orion laughs. "Well, I'm happy you did."
"Did it go well?" I ask as though I'm standing before a firing range.
"Yeah." Orion rubs the back of his neck. "There were some...Misunderstandings, on both our parts. Mainly the fact she thought I was a controlling asshole."
I poke his nose and grin. "You can be sometimes."
I'm happy when he laughs. "Yes, I know. But mainly it's just a matter of the fact we both love you very dearly, and we both want what's best for you always."
I lean my head back against the cough and take a deep breath, shutting my eyes. "Okay, well y'all gotta believe me when I say something--take it at face value, that there's not some underlying bullshit I'm secretly keeping from you."
Orion giggles at me. "Y'all?"
I flip him off. "Stop--it's coming out because of my ma."
He laughs, causing me to roll my eyes.
"Seriously Orio. If I say something I mean it. I don't play fucking mind games."
Orion frowns and takes my hand, running his finger along the black ring that matches his own. "I know. I'm sorry."
"You have nothing to apologize for--it's my mom."
"Well her and I kissed and made up, so it's fine, you needn't worry."
I cock an eyebrow. "Literally?"
"Ew! No!"
I laugh.
"But seriously, we had a really good discussion. I need to..." He sighs, clenching his jaw. "Keep in mind she's always going to be your mother, but she also has to not try to strong arm decisions when it comes to you."
"Damn straight, I'm a grown ass man!"
"I know," Orion says, putting his hand to my cheek and looking into my eyes. "And she knows that too, but Tristan, love...I'm not trying to start anything, but you gotta work on repairing the relationship you have with your parents. You really hurt them."
I look away.
"Not just by physically running away from Texas when you joined my crew, but by distancing yourself after your brother died."
"I know. It was hard Orion. They gotta know that."
"What--and losing a son wasn't hard for them, too?"
"Of course it was," I can't help but snap.
"They wanted to help you, Tris, and you wouldn't let them." He holds up his hands. "That's all I'm saying."
My fiance gets to his feet. He stoops over, giving me a kiss on the top of the head and then leaves. I sigh and close my eyes again, wishing my fiance weren't right.

I have to admit I never imagined myself standing where I was right now, on a beach in Virginia. Two months have passed. I'm holding Orion's hands in my own. He's grinning at me and I'm grinning back. We stand just as planned, flanked by Arlene and my parents on my side, with Jake, Ben, and Amy on Orion's side. Jake is Orion's best man; Arlene is my best woman.
It's a small wedding, intimate, with only our closest friends and family. The women are wearing tea length red dresses, holding bouquets of red roses sprinkled with baby's breath. Amy even has some of the tiny white flowers in her hair. The men are wearing black suits with white undershirts, black vests, and red rose boutonnieres with a single wisp of baby's breath.
I'm dressed in a black tuxedo with a white shirt and vest, a rose on my lapel. Orion is, well, Orion. He's decked out all in black. I gotta admit though, it really makes his boutonniere pop. He's got his contacts in with black eyeliner, and I love it.
After we exchanged vows, him and I sneak away. There's an hour before the reception starts so it's perfect. In the distance we noticed a small outlook, and that's where we were now.
I look down at his hand and mine, with our matching black rings, and now our matching silver wedding bands. I take his hand and kiss it. He smiles at me, entwining our fingers so I can't let go, and puts his head on my shoulder.
"I love you, hubby," he coos, a grin so cheesy it's nearly cheddar.
I groan. "Don't call me that Orio."
He laughs diabolically, which makes me laugh. We grow quiet, looking out at the waves as the sun sets.
"This is perfect," I tell him.
"It'd be more perfect if I could see the sunset properly."
I look at him, confused. "Huh?"
Orion looks at me, his mouth a small 'o'. He has a "oh fuck me" look on his face, but it's not the sexy bedroom sort of "oh fuck me".
"I just realized I never mentioned that I'm color blind to you."
I practically fall over. "What?"
"Yeah. Yellow looks pink to me and shit." He gestures out in front of him. "I mean, don't get me wrong, this is very beautiful, I just know it's wrong."
"You're joking, right?"
He looks up at me with just his eyes. "No."
I screw up my face. "But...you sing about colors a lot."
"Yeah. I've learned what colors are supposed to look like, and which objects are supposed to be what color, but I don't actually see it like that." He chuckles. "I had my reasons for wanting our wedding color to be red...It's one of the colors I actually see properly."
My mind is still spinning. "Wait--haven't you done the cover art to some of your guy's albums?"
"I can still read, yaknow. If something should be yellow I just grab the marker that says yellow, dude."
"Oh."
Orion laughs.
"Hmm." I brush my lips over his knuckles. "So I guess even when you're married you can still learn something new about who you're with..."
He sits up, looking at me with nothing but fierce devotion. "I want you to know, Tristan, I plan to grow old with you, and there's going to be a ton of stuff we're going to learn about each other. We'll learn about each other every day and grow together. No matter what I'll be here, besides you. Through the good and the bad, I'll always be here."
"I know," I tell him, taking both his hands into mine. But the intense look in his eyes doesn't leave, and he's telling me these things with such urgency it's as though his life depends on it.
"Tristan, you literally saved my life. If it weren't for you I know with full certainty I'd be dead by now. I would've killed myself willingly, or I would've drank myself to death."
I stroke the side of his face. "Don't say things like that."
"It's true though. You injected purpose into my life. I was a lost soul, just half-assing everything. You mean the world to me, Tristan, and I want you to know I'm never, ever, going to leave you again."
He starts crying, so I pull him into a hug.
"And I might not be perfect, but I'll be as perfect as I can for you. I'm going to be the best husband I can be for you, Tristan. I love you. I love you so much."
"I know," I tell him, stroking the back of his head.
My husband is finally happy. "I feel like I can finally start my life now."
We kiss.
