PERSONALITY
Calder has lived his life certain that he was being poisoned. He can't remember a time in his life where acid didn't maintain its steady drip on his chest, burning away parts of him until his thoughts and body were alien to him. Cal is young enough to remember innocence and how it was stolen from him, but the thought brings more sadness than anger. He feels suffocated in his life and yearns for freedom, for the Fae's sadistic rule to end so that everyone can be free- if such a thing is possible.
Calder exudes a certain calmness and serenity so at odds with the frantic and riotous fever of most courts. He has perfected his false confidence, and moves about as though he has no worries in all the world. Cal does not challenge or get in the way of other Fae, so he is often ignored. He deescalates misunderstandings and ignores those who try to bait him into anger, and so is labelled as 'no fun' by most of his kind. Becoming general drew far more attention than he was used to, many questioning if the quiet Fae had the ruthlessness his position demanded. But Calder has a sharp wit and a slow smile, and on the rare occasion where he stands up for himself (though he does so more often for his Lady and court), there is no question that would make a dangerous enemy- even if it's all a bluff to keep the other Fae from figuring out how powerless he really is.
He is kind, whenever he can be and whenever he can't be caught being so. He still loves his parents almost as much as he hates them, though there is no reason behind it other than pathetic attachments that are far too human. He learned quickly to keep any compassion hidden, however. Cal finds it hard to trust other Fae, and is too afraid to get close to them for fear that they are like his parents and will use any attachment he has to them against him. He sees the potential of good even in those who strike him over and over, and is a pathetic case of placing loyalty and hope in those who don't always deserve it.
Cal hates himself a little bit, for not being what his parents hoped for, for being powerless and weak and worth nothing. He hates himself more, whenever he hurts someone doing as his parents wish, playing the dutiful son and acting the coward. Whenever his new duties as general have him cutting down Fae and Human at the whim of his High Lady. He hates that he's far too good at it.
BACKGROUND
Born from a successful and powerful line, Calder's parents were hoping to bear a child of their combined powers, to do what both failed to do- kill the current ruling family and insert themselves as the new royal blood. His father and mother were not mates, and threw their own aside to form a partnership out of ambition and knowledge of the other line's immense power. His father came from a long line of generals, hungry for the throne that he had always stood beside- and his mother had been born from an ancient line whose powers had rivaled the High Family's line, but were renowned for their intense loyalty and fealty. Cal's mother did not have the same morality to hold her back.
They had a boy and determined to raise him like an assassin with a single goal in mind- a goal that was made that much easier after the current Lady of the Summer Court nearly eliminated her entire line. It didn't matter that they never visited him until he was four, and that they gave him a dagger before they gave him a hug. It didn't matter what soul he'd begun with- by the end of it, he would be a killer.
When the soft-hearted boy was caught nursing a rabbit back to health? His parents tested his schooling by making him torture it for as long as possible without it dying. When they realized he was holding his breath while swimming? They held him down until he stopped thrashing, disgusted that he went unconscious before he developed the ability to breath underwater.
Cal had always excelled at his fighting lessons- grappling, daggers, and other weapons came fairly naturally. But his parents had been waiting for the unveiling of his powers, of abilities they pooled their genes together for. They were certain such strength would leave no doubt for who deserved to rule the Summer Court. They waited. And waited. But Cal was fully grown, and still they did not appear.
They would have started over, killed Calder had another child to focus their attention and abilities on, but his mother died first. And there was no other High Fae lady willing to scorn their mate and their Lady, so Cal's father was left to take his frustrations out on his son. The plan was reformed- strategic lessons (of which Cal had taken to quite easily) were introduced, and after more brutal years of schooling, Cal managed to earn his place as one of the youngest generals appointed in Summer Court history. And through it all, has managed to keep his lack of powers secret- through deceit, resilience, and enough skill with a blade that its said he doesn't even need to use them.
His father will not kill him on the chance that he one day gets his powers- and if he runs out of patience, that will be the day he orders Cal to kill the Lady of the Summer Court, using deception and disloyalty in place of the immense power he was meant to inherit. Cal hopes to manage freedom long before he's driven to that.
SKILLS
Very proficient with a number of weapons, especially daggers. He is an excellent fighter and is trained well in stealth and the evasion of other's powers and attention. He is also trained in identification and use of thousands of natural poisons. Well-read, and has the strategic mind that had him noticed by the High Lady.
AESTHETIC
