There are some children whose never quite grow out of their imagination and wonder, and Corrine is one of such who believes it to be an essential part of herself. There's nothing more terrible to be in life than dull in her opinion, and boredom is her sworn enemy. She'll turn any occasion into something brighter and more lively with an outlandish idea or two, usually along with a blatant disregard for any and all propriety. Corrine entertains herself and others with stories of a bygone era, an adventerous romance, or lonely girls who find mythological beasts to keep them company, and has a way with words that can weave her wild imaginations from thin air. This makes her just charming enough that most people will ignore her frustrating habit of relentless questioning and hatred of small talk. She's consistently restless.

She is resourceful and inventive, as she has had to rely on herself in many occasions to get out of scrapes or entertain herself for hours on end. Her mother tells her she's a magnet for trouble that only attracts luck, and wonders why she's determined to be so argumentative in the first place. There's a blatant stubbornness in Corrine that refuses to yield her ideals and opinions, ones that she'll go on and on about until the other person gives in. Corrine spends most of her day talking.ย

Cora's ideas and imagination may seem radical and almost impossible, but she also has the will to follow through and take action. It isn't that she's unnecessarily optimistic, its that she believes in her capabilities- and is usually right. She's the worst nightmare to any fan of tradition.

Corrine is inquisitive and asks the questions many others are afraid to ask, labeling her as rude and annoying to some. There's a certain brand of wisdom that she possesses, where she can see possibility and wonder in the mundane, and she will share her observations quite freely. Sometimes it seems like she'll talk about everything but herself.ย

She's always felt a certain connection and fascination to all things nature, and has named practically every tree and rosebud on her family's property. This connection likely originates from her loneliness and uncertainty of direction and place in the world. Corrine imagines things and people are friendlier and more open than they seem to others, as she craves their attention and understanding. Nature was as restless and as full of chatter as she was, and never told her to be seen and not heard.

It's difficult to find affection and attention in a family of twelve, especially if you're number six- the middle child of all middle children. Cora has never held it against her parents for being so busy with their work managing the farm and all their other children, but a lack of adult guidance in her life has made her rather flippant about rules and convinced her impulse knows best. Her oldest siblings are only three years older than her (she followed a set of twins and triplets), so she spent a lot of her childhood independently, wandering the land and daydreaming when she wanted, riling up her younger siblings to abandon their chores and join her on an adventure when she felt like it.

And yet, she would have rather had a stricter childhood filled with attention than the aimless one she had been given. Corrine is predisposed to question everything, including her place in the world and herself, and she isn't always happy with the answers- the childhood filled with repetitive chores and tasks that she was given left her mind far too free to go down this road. She wants to do something on a greater scale of meaningful in her life, not just to be a small cog in the machine that was her parents farm, unremarkable unless being scolded by her parents for her rebellious and careless ways.

being a farmer for all her life

There's nothing Corrine hates more than stagnant normalcy, and that's all she can see for the future her parents want. She loves nature and the farm, but it isn't all she wants for herself. Her parents disagree with her 'lofty ambitions,' but Cora is determined to change something or be something. Perhaps something to do with writing or poetry- but the first step in that particular ambition would probably be to learn how to read and write.

financial strain

Her family has had close calls, and feeding all her siblings has been tough. They have almost lost the farm many times, and Cora doesn't know what will become of her family if they do. Her parents would probably have to leave the younger children at an orphanage or distant relative's, the older (including her) left to fend for themselves. Cora couldn't bear to see her family fracture apart, as she truly loves her siblings and wants the best for them.

fire

It isn't exactly a strong fear, but Cora gets anxious of the possibility of a raging inferno that can begin at one spark. She is always very careful around flames, too nervous to enjoy their heat and inspiration for the imagination anymore.

Cora has a habit of naming animals, things, or places she's been to (which may already have a less exciting name) based on her feelings in relation to them. She usually keeps these little names to herself, only revealing them to her brothers and sisters or by mistake.ย  It was something she's always done since she was a child, and she loved it when she's given permission to name an animal on the farm.

There was a barn fire six years ago that lit up quickly in the night, and it was the crying of the horses trapped inside that woke her up. Without a thought, Corrine raced down, yelling all the while to wake her family. She was the first there and didn't hesitate to jump in the trough and soak herself, tearing a piece of her night dress to wrap around her mouth, then jump into the groaning building. Cora managed to untether three horses that raced out of the barn before her family arrived with buckets, her parents yelling for her to get out of there. But she stayed to get to the rest of the horses, as she couldn't bear to let them die like this, frightened and burned alive. By the time she got to the last horse, her own that she had since she was a child, it had collapsed from smoke inhalation. Corrine tried to wake her and move her, but it took her own dizziness and a beam crashing down behind her for her to realize that she had to leave her. Cora bent down to give her a kiss and pet her face one more time before stumbling past the flames and out of the barn to save herself.ย

Cora has never quite forgiven herself for abandoning Liliana, for not being fast enough, strong enough, or smart enough to save her. The incident has made her anxious around fire since, and realize more responsibility when it comes to people or animals. She used to lose herself in daydreams and be unreliable to get something done quickly or efficiently, but the incident has shown her what a lack of caution can cause. Especially since it had always been her job to collect the candles at the evenings end, and she didn't remember making a trip to the stable that day.
