•Chapter twenty-two•
I walk into the the smooth air of Sugar&Sweets. I adjust my bag on my shoulder as I look around at the customers sitting around, enjoying their afternoon tea.
I make my way to the back of the coffee house, and knock on the office door at the back of the kitchen.
"Come in."
I hesitated before opening the door to see my Old Boss. She still had her hair tied in a bun, and her painted eyebrows were more successful than me right now.
"Ah, your back." She says looking at me with no expression at all.
"Huh, yeah, I guess I am." I shrug.
"What happened? Your Boss didn't like your face?" She says. I nearly miss her rude comments.
"Something like that." I mumble.
"You start now." She says leaving over and chucking me an apron.
"What?" I say frowning. That easy?
"Your hired, Amy is nagging me for help, and all I want to do is eat my donuts without interruption." She says in a bored tone, pointing to her box of donuts.
"Now get out."
I didn't need to be told twice, I thanked her and shut the door behind me, with the apron in my hands. Lucky I got her on a good day, but she'll probably regret it later.
I put my apron on and watch as Amy rushes from table to table. She comes back, instantly seeing me, she smiles and her eyes trail down on my apron.
"Your- wait, what?" She says looking confused as ever.
"I'm back." I nervously laugh, pulling down my black cardigan sleeves.
"But what about Eugene? What- what?" She couldn't understand.
"What are you doing here?"
"I work here." I say.
"What are you really doing here?"
"Last time I checked, it's a free country." I smile.
"Edythe... what happened?" She says grabbing my arms and leading me around the back to talk.
"Now spill." She was serious now.
I looked her in the eye. "Players don't fall in love."
Her hand went to cover her mouth. "Edythe you didn't quit, did you?"
I didn't say anything, I just looked at the ground to see my shoes and her purple ones.
"He's changed. I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I need you to know that he's changed." Amy says looking at me.
"It's for the best." I say.
She nods, understandingly then turns to go back to the counter. I followed after her with my mind wondering.
Am I doubting myself? No. I can't, it's for the best.
"What would you like to order?" I smile for the person waiting at the counter.
That's what happened the rest of the afternoon, serving customers and thinking about the times that are just memories.
I'd have to get a new job soon. If I want to move forward, I'll have to move from the place that started the whole thing.
And it's in the chair right across from the counter. I didn't look at the spot, and I made Amy serve the people on that table.
Table 5 just makes me think of Molly, which is the last thing I want to think about.
"Sometimes I want to smack you with rapunzels frying pan." Amy says to me shaking her head.
"That's rich, coming from you." I say raising my eyebrow.
"At least my mamma raised me better than you raise your eyebrows." Amy laughs.
"Gee thanks." I laugh.
"No, but really though-"
"Do you think I'm making a mistake?" I say questioning her and myself.
"From my point of view, I think your making a huge mistake. But that's me." She shrugs.
"Great. I'm doubting myself." I mumbled, as I stand to wait for the meal from the kitchen.
"You did what felt right." Amy says taking the order and pacing the plate of food to me.
"I guess so." I shrug. I took the plate to the table to my left then came back to a disappointed Amy.
"Ugh, can you wear anything other than black?" She says pointing to my clothing. I was wearing a black top, cardigan, black tights and boots.
"But I have a pink top underneath, see?" I say pointing to the pink singlet poking out underneath my top.
"Getting better." She says tilting her head.
"Well it least I don't look like a big purple Macaron." I laugh.
"That's an insult!" She says, her jaw dropping.
"No I was describing you." I smirk and she just glares at me.
"Honestly," a voice came from behind us. I turn to see our boss standing there holding her donut, looking pissed off. "How many times do I have to tell you? Get to work! This is the last straw!"
As she left, Amy whispered, "she has to find one first."
I shake my head at her and shove her towards the customer waiting at the counter.
I've got Amy, right? I don't need anyone other. For now, it's just her and I. That's all I need.
Isn't it?
I open the door to my house, to find mum washing the dishes. She looks at me smiling then frowns slightly.
"Aren't you meant to be at work?" She asks.
"I was. At Sugar and Sweets." I replied.
"I thought you quit? What about your job with Eugene." She wipes her hands on the towel and puts her hands on her hips.
"I quit Ma."
"You what?"
Here we go..
"I quit." I repeat.
"What, why?" She asks leaning on the kitchen counter, her eyes widen.
"Because, I'm running away from my problems before they even happen."
"A problem? Why was there a problem?" She pushed.
God she asks so many questions.
"A problem of falling in love. I'm just gonna get my heart broken. I thought I would never like that jackass, turns out, I actually care for the guy." I throw my hands up in annoyance.
"You can't choose who you can and can't fall in love with." Mum says a smile tugging at her lips. "Sometimes you get someone who's all wrong and all right at the same time. And they drive you completely insane."
I put my head in my hands. "It's just so confusing." I mumble.
"The reason it's confusing, is because it's love." Mum answers.
Love? Really. I'm not in love. That's what I'm trying to avoid. But if I really thought about it hard enough, about everything, maybe jut maybe she might be right.
I'm doomed, I thought to myself.
"I'm not in love." I try to convince her, when I can't even convince myself. "It's to hard. Shouldn't it be easy?"
She smiles at me like she was preparing this speech her whole life.
"If love didn't have challenges, what will you be fighting for? What would be the point?"
