•Chapter nine•
"I'm am absolutely disgusted." Mrs Rider hissed. She pointed to each of us, giving us a lecture about last night.
"Eugene, how dare you let them ruin your date!"
"AND YOU, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE IN CHARGE."
She yells pointing her skinny little finger at me. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.
"AND YOU, HOW DARE YOU JOIN IN." She yells to Sebastian.
"YOU." Mrs Rider yells at hunter, he looks terrified.
"Stop, your frightening him." I say to her.
"YOU ARE NOT THE PARENT IN THIS SITUATION!" She yells at me making me jump.
"WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE-"
Now the 'when I was your age' lecture.
"Mum it's 2017, not 1975." Eugene rolls his eyes.
"SIT."
"Sitting." He sighed sitting on the chair.
"I can't believe-"
"Mom, don't worry about it, like you said, there are other girls." Eugene sighs.
"Don't worry? Don't worry?"
Here we go.
"I THOUGHT I RAISED YOU BETTER THAN THIS!" She cries.
"Oh my god." I mutter quietly.
"You, go home." She points at me. "Hunter go to your room."
What?
Did she just fire me?
Can she do that?
I mean, isn't it Eugene's choice?
I didn't spend another minute in that house, I held onto my phone tightly and walked quickly out the mansion.
Somehow, Mrs Rider knows EVERYTHING. Because when she was our age, APPARENTLY, she never used to ruin dates.
I walked straight to Sugar&Sweets to see Amy.
When I walked in the cafe, the air smelt of coffee beans and strawberries.
Amy saw me from the counter and a smile came on her face. She sat on the counter, swung her legs over the other side then got off and ran at me.
I hugged her and laughed.
"I felt like I haven't seen you forEVER." She exaggerated.
"I know, well, I think I just got fired so-"
"What? He fired you?" Her eyes widened and her mouth open.
"No, his mum. I think." I say.
"Oh, mothers." She says cringing.
"So, you and Sebastian, Aye?" I smirk at her.
"Oh yeah, but he hasn't called me." She says looking down at her shoes.
"Probably because he's getting a lecture too."
"What did you guys do?" She says curious.
I thought about everything that happened in the last two days. There was a lot I haven't told her and she was supposed to be working.
"I have a lunch break now, so spill." She said pointing to the table beside us.
I sat down and told her everything making sure I didn't miss out a single detail.
Her eyes widened at some parts -like that night when Eugene said I looked beautiful. Her jaw dropped and laughed at my spy plan that got us into trouble.
"Do you want to know my favourite part out of that whole story?" She says smiling.
"Okay?"
"When he said you were his girlfriend just to piss the blonde chick off." She smirks.
"My favourite was when he showed me the library."
She sighs. "Of course it would be."
My phone started to ring, interrupting our chat.
It was a unknown number, Amy shrugged so I pressed the answer button.
"Hello?"
"Edythe, I just want you to know that your not fired-" it was Eugene's voice.
"I'm not?" I said surprised.
"-no. I know my mother told you to get out, but your staying." He breaths into the phone.
"Ah okay."
"And Edythe, thank you for ruining my date, I couldn't stand another minute there." And with that said he hung up.
My phone lingered to my ear for a few seconds before I put it back it my bag.
"So?" Amy questions.
"It was Eugene," her eyes widened. "I'm not fired apparently, and he is glad that I interrupted their date." I smile.
"Wow." She says fluttering her eyelashes.
"What?"
"He's so whipped."
"What? He doesn't even like me, he mostly growls at me all the time." I say flinging my arms in the air.
"Ah huh." She says holding back a smile.
"You need to get back to work and since I'm not fired, I should be heading back". I say to Amy.
She pouted her lips.
"But I'm so tired."
"If you work, then maybe I will send Sebastian over to say hi." I smile.
Her eyes widened. "Okay!"
I laugh to myself and got up from the chair. Amy rushed back behind the counter grabbing the plates of food for the tables.
I wave goodbye and left the cafe, on my way back to the mansion. Do you think it's safe?
I don't want to be confronted by the evil queen of the west with her long nails and eyebrow mountains.
When I arrived, I was glad to see Eugene sitting out the front concentrating on flipping a bottle.
Without a word I quietly sit down next to him, but making sure there's a decent amount of space between us.
"Edythe," he sighs. "Just know that everything I touch, turns into a mess. I thought hiring you would put me in a straight line. But I just brought on a whole new mess." He says.
I didn't quite understand what he was saying.
"Mother rely's on my work to keep the business running and I sometimes mess it up. Then there's Bea and my father, it's all my fault." He puts his head in his hands.
"I'm sure it's not all your fault-"
"It is, Edythe. Everything that was brought into my life has been a disaster." He says forcefully trying to get the message across.
I stayed quite and listened.
"My mother wasn't like this a few years ago when my dad was alive. But one night, I was fifteen probably, I told him I hated him. I said it to his face. I felt horrible." He sighs.
"After that, he grab the keys and said he was picking up some milk. But I knew he just needed space.
"He never came home. I wasn't worried back then, I'd always knew he would come home, he always did. That was until police turned up on our door saying there was an accident on Keith Street."
I stared out into the distance, my heart beating a little faster than normal. The hurt in his voice brought my tears to become blurry.
"I didn't believe them at first." He pauses. "After that. Everything started tumbling down like lined up dominos."
Without thinking my hand found his. A jolt of electricity shot straight up my arm, but I ignored it.
We sit in silence, he squeezes my hand as if to say thank you.
It was clear to see that I was slowly but carefully, breaking down his walls, allowing him to trust me.
To trust me not to break his heart.
