Epilogue
This is gonna be a long day. The documents from our clients just arrived and I have to sign all of them so the agreement will push through. At this point, I just have to finish everything so I'll have stress-free weekends.
A moment later, I heard knocks from the glass door and Sienna came in, excusing herself. I took a quick glance at her and put it back on the documents on my desk.
"Sir, good morning," she greeted.
"Good morning, Miss Sienna," I greeted, nodding my head, acknowledging her presence. "What are you here for?"
"You know about Miss Saunders has been on her maternity leave, right, sir?"
I nodded. "Yes, she sent me an email about it. And it's too obvious. She got a huge baby bump when she came to the office a few weeks ago. So, what's the matter now?"
"An intern is coming next week and she was supposed to be under Miss Saunders."
"And what's the problem? Miss Saunders probably filed her leave before she got the memo, right?"
Sienna shook her head. "I believe she didn't turn it over to anyone so we're kind of backtracking so we could find a mentor for this coming intern."
My eyes squinted. "And what I'm gonna supposed to do here? I believe it's the HR's job to settle the intern's supervisor, right?"
She nodded her head because she knows it how the process works. "Yes, sir. I know that, but I thought I should raise it to you as well.
"And what are you trying to impose, Miss Sienna?"
"Well, the HR also suggested if you could take it under your supervision this new intern. But if you're okay with it, sir. We won't push it if you're busy. And maybe it's also a good thing to try something new. Have you handle an intern before?"
I shook my head. "I haven't had the chance."
"And maybe this could be the great opportunity for it?" she said, smiling as if she's pursuing me to get it. "I already have the documents about this intern." She showed me the folder which contains the documents about the intern. She walked closer to the direction and handed over it to me. "If you decided to take her under your supervision, sir, it'll be great for you and that intern."
I took the folder from her. "So, tell me a little bit about this intern."
She cleared her throat. "Oh, her name's Kiersten Ceeria Gillespie, she's 21 years old and she's from the Philippines."
My forehead creased when she said where this intern came from. "That's far."
She nodded giddily. "That's right, sir. For sure, she'll be surprised when she finds out that—if ever, you'll be her mentor."
"Sure, thank you for this, Miss Sienna. I'll review Miss..." I open the folder and look for her name. "Gillespie. Right. I'll take a look at her information first and then I'll update you once I have the decision."
"Uh... Is it possible to have your decision at the end of the day, sir?"
I nodded firmly. "Sure. Thank you, Miss Sienna. I'll get back to work now."
"Of course. Thank you, sir."
When she left, I set the folder aside for a moment and continued signing what I was doing earlier. It took me half an hour to finish all the documents I needed to sign.
I stretched my arms up and I was about to stand up and grab some lunch on the private catering when my eyes landed on the intern's document folder. I grabbed and took it with me as I left my office. I headed down to the private catering where most of the executives, board of officers, and others who have a higher position has an access to this floor and private catering.
People greeted me and acknowledged my presence when they saw me coming. I gave a nod to everyone I stumbled upon until I finally have my lunch. Normally, I would call for Sienna so she'll call someone to bring lunch to my office and I don't know why I'm eating lunch out of my office now.
As I filled my plate with all the foods I like, I found a table near the glass window and I occupied it. I started eating my lunch and took a quick bite then I open the folder and review the intern's profile.
I leaned my back against the chair while reading her CV, to her credentials, and other stuff. I kept nodding my head as I'm reading a quite fit and potentially good for the role. I'm hesitating to be someone else's mentor, but to be honest, that's just one person than running the whole company with a lot of employees I've been working on. I think this will help me to improve and grow to new expertise. I'm not closing my door to a new challenge so I guess, this would be a quite fun journey for both of us.
As I finished my lunch, I directed Miss Sienna's desk confirming my supervision to Miss Gillespie as her mentor. Back in the office, I got an idea to check who this person is. I tried searching her name on social media. Not being a creep, but I guess this is me just professionally checking the background of the person who I will be working with.
And then I found her on Instagram. Good thing she didn't put it in private. I noticed she has posted a story so I clicked the icon and there I watched her stories. It was dark, quiet, but in the next few stories, she's at the airport with her family. She even posted her boarding schedule to London. The story was posted three hours ago. It's 5 in the morning in the Philippines now, but her flight was three hours ago so she left the country as early as 3 in the morning. The flight time from Manila to London roundabout 14 hours and half an hour so I guess she'll get here in here evening.
And I think she's promising. She had a personality and I can't wait to work with this lady.
On Sunday, I visited Maurice at their flower shop at Columbia Road, but before I went there, I walked to the coffee shop just around Maurice's flower shop. I buy my coffee and wait for it. There were more ladies than boys anywhere in the area and absolutely they love smelling the flowers, but I'm here because I felt like this became a routine for me.
"Here's your coffee, sir." The staff handed the cup to me. "Thank you for coming to us! We hope to serve you again!"
"Very much welcome," I said then I walked out of the shop.
But as soon as I step out of the shop, there's a scene going on and one of it was a mad lady. I stood there and watched the confrontation. I pocketed my hands and take a sip on my glamorous coffee.
"Leave, lady." The older woman ordered then crossed her arms. Why are they fighting anyway? This is interesting. This could turn into a blockbuster movie.
And then I tried looking at the girl who she has been harassing. And then as I stare at her, somewhat I figured out who she could be. At that moment, I had to go there and save her—not like a knight in shining armor, but someone who helps someone in need. And clearly, she's getting harassed by this woman.
I remove the handbag of the woman and gave it to her. I even gave her a look so she knows who she's dealing with. And then I sit with them at the same table and as I look at her, I wasn't wrong when I figured out that it was Miss Gillespie. She's my intern and she doesn't know that yet.
I was completely shocked, but I tried not to make a seeming visible reaction.
"What are you doing?" the woman asked, taunting me.
"I'm sitting with her," I said. "She's with me."
The woman laughed at my answer. What this woman has to offer? Is she going to defend herself when I already stated my intention?
"Oh, really?"
"Yes," I confidently said, nodding my head. And then I face Miss Gillespie then took a piece of her bread then eat it. Just to show that I'm with her so the suspicions of this lady would stop. Kiersten didn't react, but I guess she knows what I was doing now.
"If you're really with her. Kiss her," the woman challenged me.
I don't know what to react, but I showed nothing so Miss Gillespie won't take it the wrong way.
"Is that all that you want?"
"Yes," she said.
"And you'll leave us alone?"
"Sure," she answered, nodding her head.
"Hunky-dory," I smirked. I stood and then I walked towards Miss Gillespie.
"We're not uh—" she said but wasn't able to finish it.
I look her in the eyes and she's staring at me like I'm a complete idiot, but because the woman won't leave her alone, we had to do this. She nodded her head to give me permission to kiss her. And then I leaned closer to her, kissing her on her lips. It was a quick one.
I turned to face the woman. "What are you saying?" I smirked.
She pressed her lips together and hold her handbag tightly. She couldn't even look at us properly. She's shifting her eyes then avoided ours.
And then I noticed someone left their table.
"Oh, you can see there's a vacant table there. You can sit there."
But the woman couldn't even look in the direction I was talking about. She was covered with so much embarrassment so she hurriedly left us alone. People around us applauded for what happened. But I thought what we did was right and I still kind of shy because I kissed her—when it's not supposed to.
Well, she doesn't know that yet.
I turned to face her and she's a little shocked. Maybe she didn't expect how it will end. "Hey, you alright?"
She nodded. "Thanks..."
"You should be fine. Are you new around here?"
She nodded. "Yes... I just came here yesterday.
Of course, I know about that, Miss Gillespie.
"Dope. Would you want to leave now?" I asked.
She shook her head. "No. I'm going to meet someone. I was just waiting for her."
"Great." And then I scooped my wallet out of my pocket and fish out 50 pounds from it. I handed it over to her. She took it and then I leave her alone at the table. I was sure that the lady won't be coming back. Well, I gave her that because I took a bit of her bread and what I did isn't nice so that should pay that.
As I left her, I know she'll be fine so I headed straight to Maurice's shop. And then I realized, I left my coffee on the table and I don't wanna go back so I guess I have to go through this without my coffee.
When I reached Maurice's shop, he quickly recognized me.
"How are you, Connagh?" he greeted. He put his hands on his waist after arranging the flowers.
"I feel so great today. What about you?"
"Got a little bit busy today. There's a new lady in town and she's lovely. She bought flowers for me. What about you? The typical one, my son?"
I nodded. "Of course, that's the only flower I know what to buy."
"It's okay, every flower is beautiful," Maurice said. "I'll prepare for you now. Please wait for a second."
"Sure, have it, Maurice. Make it wonderful."
Maurice laughed and nodded. He then started preparing the Hyacinth for me.
"Your girlfriend must be happy every time you gave her this," Maurice said.
I smirked and nodded. "Yeah... I know she does."
"I only wonder if you've met her, you'll like her," I said. "Unfortunately, it's not going to happen. But it's alright, I know she's fine and all. She's in a better place now."
He took a deep breath. "Yeah, she'll remain the love of your life, my son."
A moment later, he finished preparing the flower for me. I paid for it then and I have to leave. I kept coming back every weekend to Maurice's shop to buy fresh hyacinth even though this flower lasted 6 to 10 weeks. People have preferences and I always like my flowers fresh so Rebecca knows that I'm not forgetting her at all. It's kind of my way of remembering what we really had.
When I went back to my flat, I placed the fresh hyacinths into the vase where there's a picture of Rebecca on the side. I bought this flower because when she was still here, she loves to place hyacinth's around their house and I don't know why. Maybe she just loves the smell of it, that's why I got attracted to it and never let my home run out of fresh hyacinths.
The next day, I got into the office early and as expected it's about time to meet Miss Gillespie today and I'm not quite sure what she'll react when she will saw me and that I'm her boss and mentor. Hopefully, this won't be gone so awkward.
Miss Sienna knocked on the glass door and announced that Miss Gillespie has arrived at the premises. She then leaves to meet her down in the lobby. I prepared myself as I tried to be ready to face her again.
A moment later, I walked out of my office and then I found Miss Sienna and Miss Gillespie there. As I got closer, her eyes stuck on me.
"So here he is," Sienna introduced me as I came. "Because Miss Saunders won't be around during your internship, Sir Macek will be your mentor. He's also the CEO of the company and he presented himself to be your mentor. Do you have any questions, Miss Gillespie?"
She shook her head. "I have nothing—I mean I have no questions as of now."
Sienna clasped her hands. "There you go. Thank you and welcome to CM Enterprises. If you have any questions, you can reach out to me or to Sir Macek. Should I leave you guys now?"
I nodded at her. "Yes, please. Thank you, Sienna."
When she left us alone, she started avoiding my stares.
"Are you ready Miss Gillespie?" I asked and she immediately raised her head at me. She then nodded to my question. "Follow me."
She then followed me as we headed to my office. I don't know what's going on in her mind, but I can see that she was shocked and all. But I won't make this weird for her. I'll let this be a wonderful experience for her.
And yeah, I shouldn't bring up what happened yesterday. I'll keep everything professional and let it stay that way.
***
A few weeks had passed and Kiersten and I are getting along with each other. She's fun to be with, always nice and kind, never had a dull moment with her, but I know she's still getting awkward when it comes to me so I stop making her feel one.
When I'm inviting her to my flat, I thought it would be nice to get to know her more. And it's good to know that she's making friends with a few people in the office. That's a great thing because she's getting more and more comfortable. But I don't know what she was thinking about when I asked for help by putting the DIY clock on my wall of my flat.
She spends late in my flat so we shared dinner as well. We built the clock together and I'm so satisfied with how we put it all together even though I had the slightest idea of doing it, I let her manage the work and it's quite inspiring to see her determination in how she fulfilled her work.
So I thought of giving her some stuff of Rebecca. Not because she reminded me of Rebecca, but because she left it and there's nothing I can do with It, I decided to give it to her.
She hesitated at first, but she took some dresses and I'm happy with them. And then the next day, she wore the yellow dress which totally reminds me of my Rebecca. I know I didn't give any reaction to her or talk about what happened the other night, I thought she didn't mind because she also didn't say a word. But she looks pretty in that dress.
The dress could be owned by my late girlfriend, Kiersten owned it. And I wanna see her in these dresses every time. And I don't know... it just makes me happy. Maybe she makes me happy when I'm with her.
And when I asked her to be with me in Vegas, I know it'll be a good experience for her so I make her known that it's for growth and overcoming new stuff. So, I bought her new stuff that I thought she would need because everything was abrupt and all. I didn't even let her pack some stuff back in her flat so I buy her new ones and it's what she used when we're in Vegas. It was fun. I get to know her more and she also gets to know some of my friends. I know she feels a little awkward there at some point, but she gets comfortable as soon as everything feels normal for her. She didn't worry about anything or anyone.
She just enjoyed our stay in Vegas and I think it was one of a kind.
And that moment, I also figured that something has been going on with Kiersten and Berkeley and when she admitted to me that they were dating, it kind of broke me. And I don't know why would I feel that. And there's a little affection of feeling betrayed in it and surely, it's not what I should be feeling about. I'm her boss and she's my intern. We should maintain that kind of relationship, so I let them be when Kiersten continues to show competence on her tasks and all.
But there's one specific moment that totally breaks my heart. It was when the time of the trade event. I send her a dress for her to wear, but she showed up in a different dress. I didn't make it look like a big deal and I know sending her dresses would make Berk think of it on a different matter so I let it go.
Kiersten and I never really talked about things. Sometimes, we do. But we usually don't.
Not until the moment I brought her to Manchester and then she met my parents. I thought it would be wonderful if she was there and when I saw her wearing Rebecca's dress, I was surprised that when we got into the house, my mom recognizes what she was wearing and I had to sway the topic to other stuff.
I don't wanna put her in an awkward position. She doesn't deserve to be Rebecca the second.
And she's cool with it. We talked and finally agreed on some things. We were okay. And that night was fucking cool... we kissed again, but it all change, when we get back to Newham and Berkeley, threw punches at me, and hearing Kiersten's words making me leave totally break me apart.
I didn't know what did I do to have it this way, but because I'm the person who keeps getting into their relationship, I was the one who walked away and never got back to them.
"Leave!" she shouted.
"I'm sorry Kiers—"
"Just leave!" she exclaimed and with that, I had to step back and walked away from them.
I didn't look back 'cause I know I'll be hurting to see her in pain. And I didn't mean to do that. I know I had my fault and I shouldn't reason out that she's putting herself in between the fight. As I got back into my car, I could feel my face hurting. I didn't leave the premises, but I tried calling her and repeating it all over again just for her to respond to my call.
But never a single time she did. I was heartbroken.
Another week came, I didn't go to work as I gained black-eye and I'm not good at concealing it—shades won't work inside the office so it was better to stay at home. I just reasoned out that I'm sick and I'll spend the rest of the week working from home.
I send Kiersten's task through email so she can still keep herself busy while I'm out of the office. She also sends me her trade event presentation and I quite like how she discusses everything. It's not too detailed, but precise enough about what was going on. Visuals are quite distinct that's why everything that happened that night became vividly memorable for me.
And then my black-eye was gone and I had to go back to the office the next week. I just need to keep everything moving forward. Kiersten and I were unbothered by what happened to us a few weeks ago. We kept everything professionally and never talked about it, but business and her internship.
I'm not really checking Kiersten and Berk online and what they were doing, but I guess, it is what it is. They're still dating and they could be happy together. And that's fine. That's alright. Even if it's not. I just want her to be happy and that's fine with me.
Until her last day on her internship, I had to make a move and sort it all out. The next day, I prepared as much as possible for meeting her. I seemingly prepare my mind for all of the things I have to talk about to her.
I really don't know how to talk to her personally and not all about work. I waited for her at the park. I got there early and have a sight of the city. The next thing I knew, she was there walking towards me and sitting next to me.
Our conversation was better. It really made me feel good. For the last time, we went around the city and experience the life she deserves here. Then after our trip, as I got back into my flat, I noticed something she left in my car. I thought about giving it to her early in the morning before she could leave the country.
So, I woke up early and drove to where she lives, but she already left then I met Berkeley there. He just told me Kiersten just left. It wasn't awkward. He even told me if we could talk some other time and it's fine with me. If sorting all the misunderstandings would resolve the problem then it's fine. It's what it should be.
And when she left, I feel like it would be nothing, but I guess separation anxiety is real. I'm trying to believe that this feeling will go sometime, but it didn't because at this moment... I know what Devin told me back in Vegas was right.
***
"What do you think Maurice? Should I really pursue her?" I asked him. I'm at his house. Well, I'm just visiting them after they closed their flower shop a few weeks ago. It's sad to see their business go, but it's part of the reality and we can't do anything about it.
Maurice chuckled. "Why are you asking me that, son? I'm not the one who's in love with her."
"I know." I laughed. "But, based on what you think, should I go for it or not?"
Maurice took a deep breath and crossed his arms. "You know, when I was courting my wife, I know she's the one I wanna end up with. She's the girl I wanted to marry so I make it happen! I love her, that's the cost of how we ended up here. If you love her, risk it. Don't settle for less. Go get your girl, son. She's all ever you got now."
I smirked. "I believe so... but someone might think that in a bad way that I'm pursuing her now."
Maurice creased his forehead. "And who would that be?"
"He's Berkeley. He dated Kiersten back when she was here in London and they were quite lovely. She was happy with him."
"And why do you think he'll think that in a bad way?"
I shrugged off. "Maybe because of what happened in the past? That Kiersten and I had really a good time that became the reason for his jealousy. I don't know..."
"And why do you think they're not together now?" he asked. "Simple as that. They're not compatible with each other. And maybe you're perfect one for her. You said she was happy when she was with you, right?"
I nodded. "Yeah."
"And you're right when you're with her, right?"
I nodded. "Absolutely. Not gonna lie."
"Then get your girl there. Go to the Philippines. Take her as yours."
I smirked. "That's too much for now, but I guess, I'll take it slowly."
"Son, if you wanna pursue it, do it. There's no too much and there's no less for it. If you wanna make it, then do it. You're only gonna regret it if you didn't."
"Sure, but before I do that, should I talk to Berk first?"
"What do you think?" he asked.
I shrugged off. "Well, I guess it's time for both of us to settle what happened in the past for once and for all."
Maurice nodded. "Do what's best for you. I'm all here to support you."
When I finally had the decision to do that, I send Berk a message and gladly, he replied immediately and agreed to our meeting.
Later in the afternoon, Berk and I meet.
"Hey, man." He greeted me as soon as he came and sit with me at the table. "I'm glad we're able to do this."
I nodded. "Yeah, I do, too."
"I believe I'm gonna have to start this one," Berk said. "Look, I'm sorry for what I've done to you before and I regret that I did that. I shouldn't have done that in the first place. My jealousy shouldn't be on the top of my head, but I wasn't able to handle it maturely so I was wrong. So, here's my apology because you don't deserve it."
I nodded and heaved out a deep sigh. "It's alright, Berk. But I believe I still have my fair share of fault there. You were dating him and I'm taking her out with me instead you could have the time together."
"I think that's alright. I think it was still because I was jealous. It's her decision to go with you and I don't have the right to stop her. We're just dating... she's not mine."
"Right... but let's just settle it. We're good now, right?"
Berk smirked and nodded. "Yeah, sure! Can I go back to your company now?"
I scoffed. "Well, we'll see if the HR would allow you back, but it's alright. I have nothing against you. You're much welcome to come back to the company."
"Wow!" He chuckled. "That's great! But I'm definitely stable at my work now, maybe soon."
"Yeah, let's hope for that."
I called a waiter and ordered us some beer. It was then served to us a moment after. Maybe I'm trying to have some more guts to say what I will be saying next.
"I have something else to say, Berkeley." I told him and he looked at me, drinking straight from the bottle of beer.
"Uh, yeah?" His forehead creased.
"I'm going to the Philippines."
"Ohhh... what are you gonna do—ohhh... I see."
I nodded. "Yeah."
"It's alright, Connagh. Maybe both of you are meant to be together. No hard feelings. No jealousy, of course." He laughed, but I don't know how should I react to that. "But yeah, if you want to be with her, go for it. I'm not gonna stop you. I let her go when I thought she needs more and that I'm not enough for her. Maybe you are... maybe you are enough for her, Connagh."
"Don't say that, Berk."
He smirked. "It's alright. Just like what I said, no hard feelings. It's the truth. It's my reality. If I can't be with her, then I can't, but you can, Connagh. You can be with her so make the most time out of it. Do it, never lose her or if you did, you'll never get her back 'cause I'm taking her back." He laughed it off. "But seriously, go for it. I'm not gonna stop. If she makes you happy and if you make her happy then I'll be happy for both of you. That's what matters."
"I appreciate that, Berk."
"Of course, I know she fell for you first so I have no against with that."
I took a deep breath and nodded. "Then it's final. I'm going to the Philippines now."
"Good luck and hope for the best." Berk said and we just toast our bottle of beers and gulped it out.
***
"So... that's everything that happened? Bigla akong naliwanagan sa lahat. I feel like all this new information I got makes me realize everything else. Not just my journey in London, but to every people I met there. I actually missed London. I hope I can be there again."
"The marry me and come live with me in London," I suggested and laughed it off.
She scrunched her face. "Don't say it if you're just joking."
My eyes squinted. "What if I'm not?"
"Hm..." she hummed. "Maybe I'll consider it." She giggled. "But how come you didn't show up to me when you get here? That's almost three weeks. You made me so anxious and I thought I was just hallucinating. I thought you're not really here and you were just playing with me once again."
She rolled eyes her on me and I laughed remembering what happened when I got here in the Philippines. It was hilarious, I guess.
"Would you get mad if I told you that Caro and Andrew are also part of this plan?"
Her eyes widened when I told her about that. "No! Shit! For real?!" I chuckled. "Like what you guys did to Cely and Devin?"
I nodded. "Sounds the same, but Devin's not part of this. He's busy with his pregnant wife, but yeah, this is all of my plans and I had to ask Caro and Andrew's help for this one. And I think it all worked out."
"Wait... did you mean na no'ng panahon na kikitain kita sa isang coffee shop, they were part of it?" she asked and I nodded. "I was there, you just don't know that, but I was there and when you're about to leave, Caro and Andrew had to go in and then just played it all along. How fascinating, right?"
"I'm still... gosh... I still don't believe it!"
"Well, how could you know, right?" I smirked. "And oh god, Kiersten, when I saw you at your graduation and you were wearing the dress I gave to you back in London. I was in awe. I knew you'd be perfect to it."
I smiled. "Thank you... I thought I should wear it. It reminds me of you. And I don't have an idea you'll be there so it was a surprise for me, too. But here we are now, contemplating all the things that had happened to us."
"And why do we fall in love in London..."
"And I thought I'll never be in love," she muttered and looked me in the eyes. "But it all end when I met you and it changed everything."
"I can also change your name now."
She pinched my cheek. "Now's not the time for that, but we'll see... and this thing all started when you kiss me on the flower shop that day."
"Well, I just help you to get out of trouble."
"And it brought us together..."
I nodded. "I agree. We've been through so much and I didn't expect we'll go through this point."
"Maybe Tita Gina's right. I might not be destined with a prince or so, itinadhana naman ako sa isang katulad mo and that's okay... because what you are makes the best out of me. So... thank you for coming into my life... thank you for loving me..."
"And I won't stop loving you, Kiersten." I kissed her on her forehead. "And do you know why Devin told me when I brought you to Vegas?"
"Hmmm?"
"If I make you special then you're my person. If you're making me happy then you're my special someone. It all falls down to this one thing called love and yes, I hardly fall in love with you and I'm not ashamed of not."
She smiled, reached her hand to my face, and a quick moment, she kissed me. "Would that seal our promise?"
My forehead creased. "What promise?"
"That we'll make each other happy even though we're far from each other?"
I nodded. "Yeah... but you can always be with me back in London. Would you like to fall in love with me in London again?"
Her face turned red and nodded her head. "Of course... I wanna make every of my day to fall in love with you."
"I do, too, love."
I looked her in the eyes and she did the same thing. And I know I did the right thing when I followed her in the Philippines. And I always wanna do it right with her. I wanna love her every day of my life until the end of my life. And I thought everything ended when Kiersten and I back in London, but here we are now...
On a new chapter of our endless journey.
