Falling Hard - 15
Hunter's POV
At 5:30 p.m., I climb out of the shower and head into my adjoining room. Going through the closet, I grab a pair of jeans and a button-up shirt. I wore a clean pair of boxers, jeans, and a sweater.
Before I make it to the kitchen to help Suri with the finishing touches of dinner, the intercom goes off. Looking at the wall, I see Nan and Pop standing outside with Luna. Pressing the button, I let my family up. I unlock the door and then walk into the kitchen.
Suri looks up from placing the turkey on the serving dish. "Can you set the table and then bring the food to it. Everyone will be here shortly."
"Okay," I grab the cutlery from the drawer. "Luna, Nan and Pop are on their way to this floor. We're just waiting for Ayden, Grandma and Grandpa to come."
"Have you spoken to Pop lately? There's something wrong, and he won't talk to anyone about it. Do you think he will open up to us tonight?"
"I'm not sure." I place my hand on her arm. "I know you're close to Nan and Pop. It won't hurt to ask them about it if they don't bring it up tonight."
"Thanks, Hunter." Suri smiles at me. "You know the right things to say to make me feel better."
Moving to the dining room, I set the table, placing everything in its rightful place. Once all the food is on the table, I head to the living room to greet my family.
Pop is on the couch holding his walking stick. A smile spreads across his face as his eyes land on me. "Hunter, can you grab me a Scotch, please?"
"Oscar," Nan scolds. "You know you can't have a drink. It will mess with the tablets you've been taking."
"Hush, Barb." He shakes his head. "It's one drink. It's not going to kill me."
"Yet," she mutters, giving him an evil look. "When you go to the hospital tomorrow, you can tell Doctor Davison you had a drink with your Grandson."
Pop laughs. "I'll tell him I needed to celebrate my Grandson taking over the family business.
Walking over to the bar, I pour two glasses. I take them to the couch and sit across from him. I look closer at him, and he seems to have lost weight. "Are you okay, Pop? You don't look good."
His face is pale. "There's something I need to tell you over dinner, but I don't want you to put your plans on hold because of me. Can you ensure that Suri has a good time and keep her distracted from what will happen to me?"
"You can trust me to do that, Pop."
"Good," Pop tips the glass back and drinks its contents. I forgot how good that tastes." He gives me back the glass. For the rest of the night, I will have water." Pop kisses Nan, and she melts into his embrace.
"I love you, Oscar." Nan looks at me. "What time is everyone else coming?"
The door to the condo opens, and we see Ayden, Grandma, and Grandpa walk into the living room. They take a seat, and I offer them drinks before dinner.
Suri walks into the dining room and looks at the group. "Dinner is ready," she says, leading us to the kitchen. We sit at the table. "Who wants to carve the turkey?"
Grandpa put his hand up first. "I'll do it." He looks at Pop. "Unless you want to?"
Pop shakes his head. "You can do it."
Grandpa cuts the turkey. He puts some turkey on a plate in the centre of the table. Allowing us to take what we want.
The tablet on the table starts to ring, and Suri pushes her chair back and answers it. "I'm glad you're joining us for dinner, Mom and Dad. How's Australia?"
"It's amazing," Mom says. "I wish you kids were here. Where is everyone?"
Suri turns the tablet around so Mom and Dad can see everyone at the table.
Mom looks at Pop. "Dad, is everything okay? You don't look well."
Suri mouths. "Told you so," I said to myself. She watches Pop closely.
"Hush, my child. I will talk to you all about something after dinner. We're here to enjoy the company of family and be thankful for what we have." Pop looks at Mom through the screen.
Mom doesn't like to be talked to like that, but since it's her father, she will be quiet for now.
"The food looks delicious. Did you do all of it by yourself, Suri?" Dad asks.
A smile spreads across Suri's face. "Yes, I did it. I was supposed to get help, but something came up with Hunter, and he had to deal with that. At least he set the table for us."
Mom looks proud as she watches Suri. "I'm so proud of you, Suri. You did a great job putting together a Thanksgiving dinner before going away."
Suri blushes slightly with the compliment. "Thanks, Mom."
When the turkey is carved, we start piling the food on our plates and then go around the table telling each other what we're thankful for.
Suri starts. "I'm thankful for family and all of us being able to share a meal tonight."
Ayden is next. He looks around the table. "I'm thankful for women. They know how to pleasure me."
Grandma slaps him on the back of the head. "You need to be respectful to women, son. This behaviour is why you don't have a girlfriend." Looking at me, she adds, "You need to teach your brother some manners."
"Bullshit," Ayden stands. "I'm fine the way I am. I don't have to change, but you must get with the new times."
Grandma shakes her head at him. "You're a lost cause. I should have done better by you."
Grandpa looks at Grandma with love in his eyes. "I'm thankful for all the times I wake up with my beautiful wife beside me."
"Aw," Nan says. She holds Pop's hand and whispers. "I can't lose you." A tear falls, and she quickly wipes it away.
"I will always be with you, Barb. Don't be afraid." Pop kisses her cheek and tells her how much he loves her.
I wish I had someone to say something like that to.
Mom gets our attention once the table finishes saying what they are thankful for. "Dad, I won't let it go until you tell me what's wrong with you. You look like you're fading away, and I don't like it."
Looking around, I watch as concern flashes across everyone's faces. Suri moves her chair and rushes over to Pop. Placing her hand on his, she whispers, "Please, tell us what's going on."
"I have cancer and the doctors have tried everything, but it's not working with the kind that I have."
"Is there anything we can do, Pop?" Suri asked.
"No, you three will keep your plans to escape the city. Have fun, and if there's any news, we will let you know."
Suri pulls away from Pop. "I'll respect your decision. I love you, Pop."
"I love you, too, sweet girl."
