Chapter Three
"We live out our lives on the surgical unit. Seven days a week, fourteen hours a day. We're together more than we're apart. After a while- the ways of residency- become the ways of life. Number one: always keep score. Number two: do whatever you can to outsmart the other guy. Oh, and yeah, number four: everything, everything is a competition. Whoever said that winning isn't everything never held a scalpel. There's another way to survive this competition. A way no one ever seems to tell you about. One you have to learn for yourself. Number five: it's not about the race at all. There are no winners or losers. Victories are counted by the number of lives saved. And once in a while, if you're smart, the life you could save could be your own".
"they're dancin', i'm feelin' static, wanna get closer like magnets"
Izzie and Lucy stood by Meredith's bedside with cups of coffee. Meredith opened one eye. "George's room is bigger than mine", Izzie stated. "I live in an attic", Lucy added in. Meredith got up but tripped and fell flat on her face. Lucy started laughing as Meredith limped away. Izzie and Lucy followed after her. "I need more space, I have more clothes", Izzie said. "It's cold up there", Lucy complained. "No, Izzie, I got there first", George said, exiting his room. "It's Mer's decision", Izzie said confidently.
"My room is two inches bigger than yours"
"You have a bigger closet"
"Put your clothes somewhere else"
"I can't, Ellis Grey's boxes are everywhere"
"Mer, maybe we could unpack a few things"
"Make it more homey"
"Ooh, could we watch some surgical tapes?"
Meredith didn't answer but slammed the door of the bathroom in their faces. Lucy knocked on it. "Mer, I need to brush my teeth", she said to the door. Meredith opened the door again, took Izzie's coffee and let Lucy in before shutting it again.
"Fools on bikes killing themselves today, interns", Bailey said to her interns. "Is Bailey off her medication or something?" Alex asked George. Lucy rolled her eyes. "Of course you don't know what the dead baby bike race is", Lucy said to Alex. "Bite me", he replied. "But, you seriously don't know what the dead baby bike race is?" George asked Alex. "Every year this bar holds an underground bike race that is completely illegal". "Crazy bunch of bike messengers racing against traffic to beat each other for free shots of tequila", Bailey complained. "I need someone to get up to the OR floor, the chief needs a right hand". Everyone's hands shot up except Meredith and Holly. "O'Malley", she decided. "Don't mingle with the ER interns, they don't know their ass from their esophagus. Sew fast, discharge fast, take them to the OR yesterday and finally, no fighting over patients". Izzie and Cristina ran to grab a patient. Lucy saw a man with bicycle spokes in his side. She glared at Alex who was eyeing the patient as well. They both raced toward the patient. Behind a curtain, Alex and Lucy fought over the patient. "I got here first, get your own, jackass", Lucy said. "Whatever, this guy is mine. You're not hardcore enough for this one anyway", Alex said. The curtain was pulled back by the patient, interrupting the argument. Alex and Lucy glared at him. "Hi, my name is Viper,'' he introduced himself. "Could you just take these out of my side so I can win the race". "We have to run some tests first", Lucy explained. Alex rolled her eyes and gently took out the spokes. Lucy groaned. "God, you're such an asshole", Lucy said. "Whatever, it's a superficial wound, not surgical", Alex replied, finishing taking out the spokes. "You can finish sewing up".
Cristina, Holly, Izzie and Derek stood over a patient. "This is an unidentified John Doe, mid-thirties pedestrian, hit by a motorist swerving to avoid a bike, GCS 3, pupils fixed and dilated, atropine given for a pulse for the forties", Cristina explained. "I guess the bike race claimed its first victim", Dr Burke said, as he entered the room. "Will he be taken to the OR?" Izzie asked Derek. "Perform confirmatory tests and if he doesn't respond in six hours, declare him brain dead", Derek replied.
Webber was in surgery when George appeared. "Should I scrub in?" George asked him. "I'm afraid not, O'Malley. I'm stuck in the OR all day. I need someone to monitor my post-op and pre-op patients", Webber replied. "Pay special attention to a friend of mine called Lloyd Mackie in Room 4451".
Lloyd lit a cigarette as George entered the room. "You have to put that out, sir. Smoking kills, y'know", George said. "Liver cancer will kill me. The cigarettes just speed it up", he replied.
"There's hope, you are at the top of the donor list"
"I have been at the top of the donor list for eight months"
Izzie, Holly and Cristina sat with their patient. "Do you think he's gonna make it?" Holly asked worriedly. "I don't know if he'll respond, we only have five hours left", Izzie replied. "If he doesn't respond to the tests, then he's already dead", Cristina said. "I just want him to hurry up and go into the light so I can get another case". Izzie and Holly looked shocked. "It's a waste of his life", Izzie said. "It's a waste of good organs too", Holly said quietly. Cristina and Izzie looked over at Holly with wide eyes.
"What?"
Lucy sewed up Viper. "You're a rocking babe, you know that?" Viper said to Lucy but she ignored him. "Just let me do some tests. I can have you gone within the hour", Lucy pleaded. "No thanks", he replied nonchalantly. "I have to finish the race".
"Can you sign the AMA form?"
He signed the form and got up to leave. After a second, he turned around, grabbed her face and kissed her. Once he pulled out, Lucy slapped him. "Get out, please", she said, disgusted. She shook her head and began to strip the bed. She looked up and saw Derek entering the room. "Do you want me to beat him up?" Derek asked.
"Don't be my big brother now. I'm 26 years old, Derek. I'm not 16 anymore. I don't ask you and Mark to beat up boys that screw me over anymore. Things are different now"
"What happened to yesterday?"
"I didn't say I wanted to be close with you. I said I would be at your deathbed. That's not exactly the same thing, Derek. You're only trying to make things right with me because it makes you feel good about yourself. You didn't even apologize to me".
Bailey was doing surgery when Izzie, Holly and Cristina came in. "Dr Bailey, can we harvest our patient's organs?" Izzie asked. "If you can ID the patient, contact his family and get consent forms, have at it", she replied, slightly surprised. The girls smiled at each other before rushing off.
Alex walked over to the desk where George and Lucy were. "I am hiding from Lloyd", George explained. "I think he's attracted to me". "Go for it", Alex said. Lucy snorted. "Wait, are you not gay?" Alex asked. George looked shocked as Alex walked away. "If it makes you feel any better, I didn't think you were gay", Lucy said. "Possibly bi but-" Izzie, Holly and Cristina came over to the desk. "Cristina, do you and Meredith think I'm gay?" George inquired. "Are you?" she asked.
"No!"
"Oh, that's surprising"
After a long discussion, it was decided Cristina and Holly would convince Dr Burke to operate on their John Doe. Burke was washing his hands when a stall door opened revealing Cristina and Holly. "Can you repair John Doe's heart?" Holly blurted out nervously. "You people really like to cross the line", Burke commented. "Either whip out a penis or get out".
"What do you think I should do?" Holly asked Derek. "I think you should go over Burke's head to the chief", Derek replied.
Izzie, Holly and Cristina approached George. "Do you wanna be in for a transplant surgery?" Holly asked him.
"How is Mackie doing?" the chief asked George. "We may have a liver for him", George replied.
The interns watched as Alex assisted Dr Burke on an open heart surgery. "That asshole better get hit by a bus tomorrow as karma for this", Lucy complained as she stared at the surgery intently. "I'm just happy he's getting the surgery", Izzie said. "Me too", Holly replied. A nurse entered the gallery. "Dr Stevens, your John Doe has been identified and his wife is on her way", the nurse said to Izzie.
"Dr Stevens, this is Shelley Davidson", Derek said as he turned to leave. "Page me if you guys need anything". "Mrs Davidson, your husband could wake up after surgery. But I was wondering if he doesn't, have you considered organ donation", Izzie said.
"Dr O'Malley found you a liver, Mackie", Richard said happily to his friend. Mackie glanced up at Richard then at George. His face began to break up and he looked away, trying desperately not to cry. Richard placed a comforting hand on his shoulder as George left the room.
Alex bursted into the locker room to find Lucy. She glared at him. "I smell of open-heart surgery", he said. He came up behind her and nuzzled her hair flirtatiously. Lucy turned around and grabbed him, pushing him against the lockers by his shirt. "Stay out of my way!" Lucy yelled in his face. "You smell like crap ". She stared at him intently and looked into his eyes. Out of nowhere, she grabbed his face and kissed him. His hands were in her hair, kissing her back intensely. She pulled away and stormed out of the room.
Meredith entered the house to find Izzie and George going through video tapes. "Why did you touch my mother's surgical tapes?!" Meredith asked, furious, She stormed upstairs. Izzie and George giggled.
"I kissed him, Addie and I have no idea why", Lucy complained as she held her phone to her ear.
"There's a heat with hatred. You hate each other so much you have chemistry", Addison replied.
"But I don't want chemistry with him. I hate him"
"Then stop kissing him"
"I only kissed him once"
"Don't do it again"
"Fine, whatever"
"They're so perky and helpful", Meredith complained to Cristina and Lucy outside the hospital. "Yeah, it's kinda gross", Lucy agreed. "Then kick them out", Cristina said. "I can't", Meredith replied. Alex came up behind them as they entered the hospital. "I'm stuck in the pit all day", Alex complained. "I can't believe you got the harvest surgery". "It kills you, doesn't it?" Cristina replied.
"That two women got the harvest"
"No, it kills me that anybody got the harvest but me. Boobs do not factor into this equation. Unless, uh, you wanna show me yours"
"I gonna become a lesbian", Meredith stated. "Me too", Cristina agreed. Lucy giggled. The elevator dinged but Meredith and Cristina went for the stairs. Alex and Lucy entered the elevator. Lucy was the first to break the silence.
"About yesterday..."
"It's fine you think I'm hot"
"I do not"
"Do too"
"Do not"
"Yeah, you do"
She stared at him, grabbed his face and kissed him. She pulled away and he smirked. "See what I mean", he said cockily. He leaned in again but the elevator dinged and she left.
Holly talked to Kevin's (John Doe's) wife and little girl. As she went over the form for organ donation, Shelley got teary. Holly got teary too and excused herself from the room. She began to have a panic attack. "Kepner", Bailey said from behind her. "Breathe with me, come on, breathe. Good girl. You don't have to be a robot like everybody else. You can think of him as a person. It's okay". Holly nodded and re-entered the room to talk with Shelley again.
As George examined Mackie, he began to flirt with him again. "Sir, I don't mean to be rude but I'm afraid I'm not gay", George said nervously. "I never thought you were gay, son. I'm not either", Mackie replied calmly. "Dying is a get-out-of-jail-free card. I can be as bold as I want and there's nothing anyone can say about it, was there ever anyone you were attracted to that you couldn't have". After a while, George replied. "Holly", he said.
"I always hated organ harvesting", Dr Burke explained as they prepared the organ harvest. "I save lives and harvesting ended one". "You did your best", Holly quietly whispered to Kevin. "Goodbye".
Meredith, Lucy and Alex were working in trauma when Lucy saw Viper in a waiting chair. "Alex, why is Viper here? How long has he been waiting?" Lucy asked Alex. "I don't know, I was busy on real cases", Alex replied. "You're an asshole", Lucy said to him. "An asshole you kissed, twice", Alex whispered to her. "Shut the hell up", she replied. He smirked. Viper started coughing and Meredith walked worriedly over to him. He tried to get up and Lucy ran over too. He fell unconscious and blood started to come out of his mouth. Lucy lifted up his shirt to see that his stitches had ripped open. Meredith and Lucy got him on to a gurney and Lucy got on top of him to try and keep his wound closed. "Tell OR we're coming and page Bailey", she yelled at a nurse. Alex followed them. They arrived at the OR. "Grey, Shepherd you can scrub in", Bailey said to them. "Karev, get back down stairs. Punishment for only taking the hot cases".
Holly, Izzie and Cristina were scrubbed in in surgery. Webber and Burke entered the OR. "I will be next door when you're ready", Webber said. They operated. The organs were placed in plastic bags and special sealed containers.
The liver was placed on ice and George handed it to Dr Webber, who placed it in Mackie.
Alarmed beeping filled the OR. The heart was being removed. Everyone packed up to leave, but Izzie and Holly stayed. Cristina looked back at them. "I think that we should sew him back up for his family", Holly said to Izzie. Izzie nodded and Cristina turned back to help them.
Cristina, Holly and Izzie met up with Shelley later that day to tell her he was ready. Lucy spotted Viper's friends and pointed them out to Bailey and Meredith. "Is he okay?" one of them asked Bailey. "Is he okay? No. No, he is not okay, at all. He hurled his body down a concrete mountain at full speed for no good reason", Bailey yelled. "Yeah, I know you all pierce yourselves and smoke up and generally treat your bodies like your grungy asses can't break down to A, you want to kill yourselves, flying down a concrete mountain, go to it, but there are other people walking, people driving, people trying to live their lives on that concrete mountain, and one of them got his brains scrambled today because of one of you sniffling-no-good-snot-rag-"
"Bailey, maybe take a minute. Calm down", Lucy suggested. "In my opinion, he is not fine", Bailey said through gritted teeth before storming off. "Bailey is tired", Meredith said awkwardly. "Viper will make it". "This time", Lucy added in.
Lucy walked into the locker room where Alex was packing up. "I admit it", she said. "You're hot and I like kissing you. A lot. But I don't like you so I'm going to stop kissing you from now on". Alex shut his locker door and walked over to her until their noses were touching. "After this?" he asked, leaning in slowly. "After this", she agreed, letting their lips touch.
Meredith opened her front door to find Izzie, Cristina, Lucy, George and Holly eating pizza, drinking beer and watching surgical tapes. Everyone stopped to look at Meredith. "Cristina made us", George blurted out. Lucy hit his arm. Cristina glared at him. "What are you watching?" Meredith asked, sitting down and grabbing some popcorn. They all watched in amazement as they saw the Ellis Grey live up to her truly legendary surgical status.
