The campfire
After dinner everyone was dismissed by Chiron and got up. They all started heading somewhere. Lillith looked around in confusion, she couldn't see anyone she knew. Then she spotted Freya.
"Hey Freya where are we going?" She called as Freya came over. She seemed to be in a large group of her half brothers and sisters.
"Oh every evening after dinner we go and sit by the campfire. It's really fun trust me. The Apollo kids sing hymns and things and everyone joins in. It's great you'll love it." She said before walking off to catch up with her friends. Lillith sighed. Everyone she had met Annabeth, Percy, Amber and Freya had all been really nice to her but still she found herself on her own. She followed everyone to the area of the campfire but everyone was pushing and shoving, like they didn't know she was there. Eventually someone shoved to hard and Lillith fell on the ground just outside the heard of people. Everyone carried on moving, no one even noticed she was on the ground. Lillith sighed and began to get back up but the ground beneath her feet was slippy and she slipped and fell straight back down again.
"Ow." She said rubbing her lower back where she had hurt herself. A black shadowy figure appeared next to her and a pale hand was offered to her. Lillith looked up and saw..."Nico?"
"Yeah, just take the hand Lamwood and get up." She was shocked but she took the left hand that he offered her. On his index finger she noticed a silver skull ring which had not been brought to her attention before. His hands were cold but she didn't mind and hers were warm and strangely comforting for Nico. When she took his hand he pulled her up, get go of her hand and sighed. "You could be more careful. I'm starting to get the feeling that your a bit of a klutz."
"Well you would be right. Um...thanks for you help you didn't have to do that."
"Yeah whatever. Come on let's get to this stupid campfire." He said walking off. As he did Lillith followed him and she saw everyone move out of his way. They formed a path for him which Lillith used to follow him. She stayed close to him which Nico took note of. This girl was weird, most would keep their distance but she didn't. The death signal he gave off didn't seem to bother her.
"People do that whole moving out your way here too huh?"
"Yeah I told you I'm weird. People don't like me and the crazy thing is this is only a scratch at how weird I really am."
"Well just how weird do you get?"
"A lot weirder trust me." Lillith nodded understanding that she wasn't going to get any more information from him. "You know most people stay away from me but you don't. Don't I scare you?"
"No not really."
"But don't you sense the death signals I give off?"
"I do but they don't bother me. I told you before that I understand. People don't like different so for those of that are...well we end up alone. See when I look at you I see someone who everyone thinks is scary because no one has bothered to get to know you. I figured that I'd get to know you being I judged you. Well try to get to know you...your not making that easy."
"Don't take it personally."
"No I don't." She said as they arrived at the campsite. Nico watched as Lillith's face lit up as she looked at the scene in front of her. There was a large fire in the middle and kids were singing happily, playing happy tunes of lyres.
"No need to smile like an idiot it's not that exciting." Said Nico sitting down on the grass. The two of them were far away from everyone else but close enough to hear the singing. Lillith sat down on the cold hard ground next to Nico.
"It might not be exciting to you but I have never been to one of these before. Living in a strictly religious orphanage you don't get the chance to do this."
"Where was your Dad?"
"He jumped off a bridge when I was 8. Having no other family to go to I was put in the orphanage and that was were I stayed until you guys brought me here."
"No siblings?"
"No. Well my Father did get drunk at the bar a lot so...I might have a sibling somewhere in the world. What about you?" Nico's face became dark and he looked away from her. Yes, Lillith thought. He does have a sibling, or at least he did either way it was a touchy subject. "You know everyone is saying that you're hardly here but now your staying."
"What exactly is your point?"
"I can only assume that you still here because your Father told you to come and kill me."
"Pretty much yeah but I'm bot going to try. Chiron spoke to me last night. I won't kill you not even try. He said that you should stay here, he will see what happens and then make his decision about your fate later. I'm just here to keep a close eye on you."
"I'm not a child I don't need a babysitter."
"You have powers that you can't control. I think that you do."
"That's where you wrong."
"I just told you that Chiron might decide to kill you if you make a wrong move and your worried about me watching you. Does death not bother you?"
"It bothers me as much as the next person but death isn't the end of the line. That's what I like to believe anyway. Maybe that's just me but otherwise I find that death is just to final. It might be childish but I guess I like to think that death is just another obstacle in an adventure. A new section, that kind of thing. The thing is if Chiron decides that I really am a monster then I would rather be dead than but everyone here at risk. I don't even know what I am and it doesn't look like any answers are coming soon." Said Lillith looking at the sky.
"Your really willing to die for these people? People that shun you out of society? Label you as a freak?"
"Yes I am. To be honest I agree with that label I am a freak. I've known that for a long time. I'm not saying that I'm happy with it because I'm not. I hate being called a monster. It has always been a trigger word from me. I can take being called freak, Witch, creep but when someone calls me a monster that's when I break. For reasons I can't explain. Would you not die to save everyone here?"
"If the situation called for it I guess so."
"Then why ask me with such disbelief?"
"Just because you saying that makes me think that perhaps your not the monster I originally thought you were." He said making Lillith smile to herself.
"All hail Aurora Clifton, daughter of Aphrodite." They heard Chiron call. Lillith and Nico watched as the whole camp knelt down facing Aurora who was stood up with a dove floating above her head.
"Looks like she's been claimed." Said Nico.
"Yeah daughter of Aphrodite. Goddess of love and beauty, it fits her..."
