Chapter 16: More Work
Looking up at the large office clock, I stretched my aching neck, feeling the fatigue from hunching over my paperwork.
I only got through a quarter of the papers, this will take me all night!
"Do you want to eat lunch together?" Taehyung asked me.
Typically I would have said yes, but I looked down at the pile of paperwork and realized I wouldn't have time to even eat.
"No I'm gonna stay here and finish working." I said meekly.
"No noona! You need to eat!" Taehyung protested with a cute pout.
"I'll be ok, I have a protein bar in my purse." I insisted and smiled at Taehyung reassuringly.
"Noona! Please come eat with me!" Taehyung begged as he pouted, making me almost want to change my mind.
"I'm sorry Taehyung, but I don't want to be here all night!"
"Ugh, fine suit yourself noona!" He said dejectedly, finally giving up.
"Just help me more please, so I can finish faster!" I pleaded.
"Ok noona." he said sounding reluctantly.

It was now lunchtime and everyone started leaving, Taehyung got up to leave as well.
"Are you sure you don't want to get lunch, noona?" Taehyung asked again, concerned.
"Yes I'm sure, go on without me!" I said, shooing him away.
Taehyung met Jin at his office. They were chattering away, then finally departed together. That was when I noticed Sue, intently watching Jin. She resembled a calculating predator surveying its prey. She gave off some bad vibes, there was definitely something off about her. She turned her head towards me, catching me watching her and she gave me a death glare.
Why is she looking at me like that? I haven't done anything to this woman.
At that moment, a colleague walked up to Sue to chat, and her demeanor instantly changed. She put on a fake smile, and chattered away cheerfully with them as if everything was normal.
I didn't have time for her weirdness right now and continued reading and sorting the paperwork. Pulling out my measly protein bar, I took a bite out of it, and chugged down my water bottle.
So much for my lunch.
This was all his fault, why was he making me do all this? Looking around the room, no one had nearly as much paperwork to do. I was already regretting accepting to come here. I sighed, and tried to focus on my work.

Lunch was over, and everyone started slowly trickling back in. They all looked renewed and refreshed with more energy, and ready to work. I hoped Taehyung was ready to work as well, I could really use his help. Taehyung came back laughing boisterously with Jin. They were speaking Korean, so I didn't understand most of what they were saying. It sounded like Jin was telling a joke, maybe one of his dad jokes again.
I need to learn more Korean!
"Noona! I'm back!" Taehyung announced happily, "Wow, you got a lot done!" He looked impressed at the dwindling pile of paperwork in front of me.
Taehyung began right away and we got a lot of work done together. At 3:00 pm, he decided to get a drink at the water cooler, and I didn't see him again for another hour and a half.
When he finally showed again, he sheepishly smiled at me, coming back like he knew he messed up. I shook my head at him and handed him some papers to work on. The stack was slowly getting smaller and I was determined to get done faster.
5:00 pm, everyone started getting up, to go home. I only had about 10 more sheets of paper to go through. Getting up to stretch again, I massaged my sore shoulders, and walked over to the water cooler. This was not how I pictured this day would be, Heather's office was a lot more laid back. I basically just made copies and filed paperwork by dates, occasionally writing up a report for her.
Surprisingly, Taehyung actually stayed with me until 5:30 pm. I was grateful he was helping me this late. I felt like he was only staying to help, out of guilt for flaking on me several times today.
"Noona, I have to go now, I have an appointment to get a facial and haircut."
"Ok Taehyung bye, and thanks for everything!"
He waved at me with his boxy grin and left me, all alone in the dimmed office. The only light illuminating the office was my little lamp and it was gradually growing darker outside. I was reading the last page and glanced down at my watch.
6:00 pm! Oh my God! I can't believe I stayed this late.
Sorting the last paper, I got up to check my phone, Heather had texted me several times.
******
BFF: Girl where are you? I want you to come over immediately after you're done so we can talk! I'll be in my office.
BFF: Did you go home? Why haven't you texted me back?
BFF: How was it with Jin today?!!
******
She had been impatiently waiting to hear about my day. I would call her after I spoke to Jin, he was the only other person still at work. I knocked on his office door and I heard him tell me to come in.
I stepped in and Jin was sitting in his office chair, facing away from the door, glancing out the wall length windows.
I walked up to his desk, "Hi Jin, I'm done with everything, can I leave now?" I asked hoping, he didn't have anything else for me to do.
He turned his chair around in his seat facing me, and sat there as if he was thinking of what to say.
I shuffled my feet nervously, waiting for him to answer as I bit my lip.
"I hope you sorted the paperwork, properly." Jin said as if he didn't believe I finished already.
"Yes I did." I said confidently. When it came to work, I took it very seriously.
"We shall see, you may go then." Jin announced looking me up and down.
Before I could leave, a loud grumble could be heard coming from my empty stomach.
Why is it so loud!
"Was that your stomach?" Jin asked surprised, a small smile formed on his lips.
"Uh yes." I admitted, embarrassed as my hands covered my stomach.
"You must be hungry."
"Nah, I'm ok." I lied while my stomach started growling even louder.
"Your stomach doesn't seem to agree." Jin said , chuckling.
"Ok yes, I'm starving. I didn't really eat a good lunch." I confessed, as I glanced down at my feet.
"Well I guess we should do something about that." Jin said with a smirk.
"Huh?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Let's go get dinner." He reached for his suit jacket and put it on.
"No, don't worry about me, I'll go home and eat." I shook my head.
"Look it's my fault you're hungry, so I can at least feed you. I won't take no for an answer." Jin said looking at me with a determined expression.
I was glad he realized this was his fault and decided having him buy me dinner couldn't be that bad.
"Alright, I'll go."
