Chapter 31

The car came to a halt and I was suddenly jerked out of my thinking stance as I realised, I was already before my apartment building. Unconsciously playing with the bracelet, I got out of Keith's car and turned around to wave him off but saw him already driving away. A deep sigh escaped my mouth as I was already becoming unbothered to his discourteous ways.

My phone vibrated and I checked the notifications to see myself in the news feed. Leila Devlin's see-off at the airport was becoming a headline for the country. The most powerful business tycoon exiting the country, after marriage was the breaking morning news for the nation.

As usual, it was a mixed reaction from the public.

I guess I was not the only one. Even the powerful people had to suffer the outrageous and criticizing comments.

But then what got my attention was the headline about me and Keith. They wanted to know when we were to get married and if Leila and James would back soon to attend the wedding.

The word wedding has truly started to get on my nerves and a chill passed down my spine as I thought about it. As I turned and walked back to my apartment, I got a call and I picked it up seeing Jesse's name on the display.

"Hey," I forced out a smile.

"Just saw the tabs! Has Leila safely departed?" he asked and I heaved out a sigh but then hummed in response.

"You seem tired. Are you alright?"

I stood before the elevator and even though the door pinged open, I remained in my position staring blankly at the elevator wall. When the door of the elevator slid shut. Unbothered I pressed the door once again and waited for it, when I remembered Jesse was still on line, waiting for my response.

"Yeah Kind of!" I trailed up in the end and as the door reopened, I dragged my feet in.

"I understand. It must be really difficult to cope up with the Devlins. I mean they are the powerful people of the nation and Leila especially. I have met her quite a few times and I had realised she is really hard to deal with. Always so cold, professional," as he said that, I raised my eyebrow at the end and looked at my reflection in the elevator's mirror.

"What are you even talking about? She is the most sweetest and humble woman I have ever met. She has always been kind and friendly to me and took care of me," I argued as I couldn't remember even a single moment in which Leila behaved coldly to me.

"Really? Maybe because you are going to be Keith's wife. You are close to them so perhaps she shows her warmer side only to her family and close people," a thin line formed on my lips, as the elevator pinged open and I made my way to my apartment. The keys dangling in between my finger and as I was about to stick it in the keyhole with my other hand holding the phone to my ear, something windy behind me got goosebumps on my body as I yelped and turned around rapidly only to find Keith standing right behind me with a packet in his hand.

"Vienna are you alright?" I could hear Jesse's frantic voice as I put my hand on my chest flabbergasted.

"What's with you?" Keith looked confused to my position while I took in a deep breath to calm my nerves down.

"Don't just pop out of nowhere. Damn it!" I breathed out.

"Vienna?"

"Yeah, I am alright. It was just Keith. He caught me off guard," I told him and watched as Keith squinted his eyes for a second but then raised an eyebrow at me. All of a sudden he came forward and took the keys from me as he opened the door and made himself home walking in before me as I stood there watching him as he were some maniac.

He turned around and looked my way as I signaled him asking what in the world was he doing but in response, he simply rolled his eyes at me and got rid of his sneakers, and walked up to my couch plopping himself down, and started looking through his phone. Totally making himself at home.

"Oh, is he there with you?" I heard Jesse and realised how many times I zoned out on him.

"Oh sorry, yeah he is with me in my apartment. We went to see Leila off," I told him as I entered closing the door behind me and got rid of my block heels. "I see. I just wanted to ask you, since it's the day off if you could come out to hang out," he laughed at the end and I watched as Keith remained glued to his phone.

"Jesse, I already told y-"

"It's like an office hang out with colleagues. The others are coming too! You know to know each other. It's actually my type of meeting. It makes working together more enjoyable and helps co-workers stay motivated during crunch time. They are also bringing in their friends. You could bring your friends or Keith, if you want, or if you are not busy. I just watched the tabs and I thought this might help you," he seemed concerned and that made me smile.

''Alright. It's a nice idea," I told him and poured myself some water when my eyes fell on the mirror in the hallway to find Keith staring my way.

"Perfect! Then see you around seven. I will send you the location," he told me and we hung up as I looked back at Keith.

"What are you doing here?"

"Do you talk to him occasionally? Even when you are not working?" Keith seemed to be interested as I kept the phone down on my table and heard it beep. I picked it up and found a text message which included the address to the meet-up.

"Vienna?" Keith's soft call caught my attention and I shrugged as I went to him and handed him the glass of water. He kept the phone to his side and took the glass from me and gulped down the water as he looked back at me waiting for me.

"Sometimes. He saw Leila's departure on news and asked me if I am able to keep up with the pressure of constantly being in the news," I told him and watched as he nodded.

"It seems you two have grown closer for him to worry about your well-being," Keith was abrupt in putting up his sentence and I huffed at him. "What do you expect? I met him outside of work first, we do maintain an employe employee relationship at work. But as a friend, he does checks up on me."

"Friend?" Keith whispered and I narrowed my eyes at him as I pulled a chair and sat before him.

"What about you? What are you doing here?"

"I told you I will fetch some beer. A few minutes ago, you were lost and sobbing in my car. How do you change so fast?" he looked bewildered whilst I shifted in my seat. "Oh, that! That was just an emotional breakdown. Seeing Leila leave made me fill with anxiety. You do realise now they are going to focus more on us. Keith! It was your plan to go with the flow. Did you come out with any sort of plan to tackle this stupid wedding?" I asked him and watched as he heaved out a sigh as he fell back on my couch removing his glasses and he rubbed the bridge of his nose.

Well, I guess not!

Judging from his posture, I realised he was equally tensed as I was. It was pressuring him too.

"So you were worried about the wedding," I heard him speak out but it was as quiet as a whisper. Funny, how loudly I talk while Keith was always whispering. It was as if he was forcing himself to speak. Always so uninterested, yet soft. I wondered if it was a rich background thing or he was like that from the beginning. Because even Leila spoke so softly and with a lower pitch while I screeched every time I talked. It made me embarrassed and sometimes I wondered if I gave them headaches.

"Not really," I heard him and he looked back at me.

"I like your voice. I have wondered if you are a singer or something. You have a soothing voice," as he ended, I had my hands on my lips, flabbergasted and for the second time caught off-guard.

"Oh my god! Did I say that out loud?" I asked and he nodded.

"I am not forcing myself to talk. Don't think about such absurd things, Vienna," he gave me a small smile. My cheeks turned red and my face burned with embarrassment. I should learn to keep my feelings within me.

Moreover, did he just compliment me? My voice?

S-Soothing?

"Well, who can control, what they think," I wanted to be a smart ass as I retorted back and that seemed to caught his attention. His bright blue eyes twinkling with mirth as he gave me a lopsided smile, nodding at the end. "Correct. Who can control what they think," he crossed his legs and sat comfortably, sprawling his right hand on the headrest, and repeated the words after me as if he was challenging me on something, or maybe I got it wrong. He wanted to indicate something which I was unable to place my finger on.

He smiled softly as he handed me the packet and I saw two beer bottles.

"I can't have it right now. I have to go out with Jess-"

"Where?" he cut me in the middle and I stopped the urge to call him rude.

"Well, it like an office hang out with colleagues and friends, you know to make some connections. He sent me the address to a resto-bar, where we would dine and then a bowling alley near-"

"Okay, I have time. I will come with you," for the second time he cut me off as I glared at him.

****

Sorry for the late update. I had some work. Please stick to this story because from here on it is going to be a roller coaster of twists and turns, and the main focus on our main leads. I understand it's been more than Chapter 30 yet they are not close, but it was necessary for character development. You got to know the side story, supporting characters. What effect they have on our main leads. I hope you don't give up on Keith and Vienna just yet because the main story starts from now on. And I got some messages regarding Keith, how some girls are fangirling on Keith.

Here is a spoiler.

Keith is not really a sweet guy. Please no. But he is not also a bad guy. Till now you have got no single hint about how Keith really is. It was just Vienna. She is soft, stubborn, and amazing. While Keith is secretive and what I would call is "rough" Keith is absolutely not a rose and chocolate type of guy. If you are thinking like that, then yes, I succeeded to make you think like that. Vienna also thinks the same. Please stick to the story to know more.

Please support by sharing the story with your friends, voting, and commenting on the story.

I have thought of changing the title of this book and it would be"What Keith wants." or something like that. You can suggest your ideas as well.
