Chapter 5

I browsed the clothing racks, searching for the perfect dress. Ty, Oliver, and I had headed to the mall right after school to get the shopping over with for the dance tomorrow. Ty had already picked out a tie and a tux and was now waiting for me to go try some dresses on. A pale green dress caught my eye and I grabbed my size and stalked back to the dressing room. I slipped inside and quickly threw the dress on.

It was strapless and fell just above my knees. The bodice consisted of mint green satin and the skirt was layered lace of the same color. I gave a last glance at the mirror and opened the door, revealing the dress to Ty and Oliver.

Ty's cheeks flushed and he gave me a big grin. Oliver's eyes widened and he stared at me, a faint smile playing on his lips. I looked down at my feet and gave a slight twirl.

"How do I look?" I asked.

"You look beautiful," Ty and Oliver said in unision. I laughed lightly and felt my cheeks burn. I quickly changed back into my school clothes and paid for the dress. As the three of us left the store, I pointed toward the food court.

"I don't know about you, but I'm starving," I said as I nodded towards a chinese restaurant.

"Of course you are," Ty laughed as we walked up to the short chinese woman running the cash register. We ordered and the woman's grey head disappears into the kitchen to get our food prepared. When she returned, she handed us our takeout bags and two fortune cookies. Ty paid her and she smile at us.

"Have a good day," She smiled and waved at us a we walked away.

We sat down in a booth in the center of the court and started eating. I poked at my chicken and frowned. "This does not look like chicken."

Ty laughed and ate one of my dumplings. "Maybe it's cat," He pointed.

I stared at him in horror. "That's terrible! You are an evil human being," I said and pushed the meat away and took his fried rice. I scarfed it down quickly and leaned back in my seat.

Oliver gave me an amused look. "How do you eat with chopsticks so fast?"

I smiled at him brightly and waved my chopsicks at him. "Years of training," I smiled.

He laughed and looked over at Ty, who was giving me an odd look.

"What?" I asked.

"Nothing, just," Ty shook his head, "It's weird only hearing one side of a conversation."

I frowned at him. "I know, sorry."

He tilted his head. "Sorry for what?"

"I don't know," I said honestly. "It just sounded like the right thing to say."

"You're so weird," He said and grabbed a fortune cookie.

"Oh please," I snorted and grabbed the other cookie. "You love me."

I cracked opened the fortune cookie and unfurled the fortune. I read it and stared at the words in shock.

Long time, no see Catalyst.

I looked around in confusion and ignore Ty's questioning look. I looked back down at the fortune and saw that it had changed.

Watch your back.

I dropped the fortune on the table and sat back. Oliver stood up and looked at the fortune curiously. As he read it, his expression turned grave.

"Come with me," He said.

I looked at Ty and plastered on a faint smile. "Sorry, I spaced out."

I pushed my chair back and stood up, grabbing the fortune and shoving it into my pocket. "I'll be right back, I have to use the restroom."

Ty raised an eyebrow but didn't protest. I let Oliver lead me to the end of a faculty hallway and leaned against the wall.

"What did it mean by 'Long time, No see'?" Asked Oliver, his voice serious.

"I have no idea," I said honestly.

"This is obviously the work of a spirit. And a powerful one at that," He said and raked a hand through his dark hair.

"What about the second message? 'Watch your back'? What does that even mean?" I asked, trying to keep the fear out of my voice.

"It means," Olive gave a shaky sigh, "that you're in danger."

I sighed and pushed my bangs out of my face. "Wonderful. Just what I needed."

"I'll pick you up at 6 P.M. sharp tomorrow, got it?" Ty said as I hopped out of his truck which was currently parked at the end of my driveway.

"Got it. Bring food with you will you?" I smirked and grabbed my dress.

Ty gave a laugh and nodded. "You got it Tanson."

"See you tomorrow Donavan," I said and shut the passenger side door. As he drove away, I let out a long sigh and trudged up to the pourch of my grandmother's house. Oliver appeared by my side and followed me to my room. I dropped my bag on the ground by my door and hung my dress in my closet and flopped down onto my bed. Oliver perched on his normal spot at the end of my bed and sighed.

"What are we gonna do about this malevolent spirit issue you've got here?" He asked and leaned against my bedpost.

I sat up and slipped off my sneakers. "Isn't that your job to figure out Mr. Bodyguard?" I said, raising an eyebrow.

He shot an irritated look at me then nodded slowly. "I guess so."

I stood up and walked over to my bathroom door and announced that I was going to take a shower. Oliver just nodded and I locked the door behind me. I jerked on the water and hopped into the hot stream of water after pealing out of my clothes. I washed my hair quickly and stood in the burning water, letting it roll down my back. I turned off the water and grabbed my towel. I wipped my face as I walked over to stand infront of the mirror.

When I pulled the towel away from my face, I stared at the mirror in horror. There, written in the steam covered mirror, were three hastily scrawled messages.

Do your research.

Watch your back.

Sleep tight.

I wrapped myself in my towel and bolted from the bathroom and into my bedroom. Oliver jumped up the my bed and ran over to me and placed a hand on my cheek. I ignored the eerie sad feeling it gave me that I couldn't feel him.

"What happened? Are you alright?" He asked frantically.

I shuddered and pointed to the bathroom. "On the mirror," I stammered.

Oliver gave me a quick worried look and walked over to the bathroom and peaked his head in. He walked back over to me and shook his head.

"There's nothing in there," He said and frowned at me. "What was it?"

"A message. Three actually," I said quietly.

"What did they say?" Asked Oliver.

"Do your research. Watch your back. Sleep tight," I said and shuddered as I spoke the last eerie message.

Oliver tilted his head and frowned. "Are you cold?" He asked.

"What?" I asked, confused as to why he asked.

"Well, you're shivering and you're only wearing a wet towel," He said lightly.

I looked down at myself and shrieked, running to hide in my closet. I peaked my head out and frowned, embarassed. "Go stand in a corner or something. And don't look!" I sqeaked.

Oliver laughed and stood up, putting his hands behind his head and walking over to the corner of the room, facing the wall. I quickly threw on some sweatpants and a tanktop and walked out of the closet slowly.

"You can look now," I said sheepishly. Oliver turned around slowly and walked over to me. I pushed my damp hair out of my face and sighed.

"Sorry about that," I said.

He smiled warmlyand sat in my office chair. "No need to apologize."

I yawned and sat down on my bed cautiously, heaving a sigh. Oliver frowned, strode over to me, and sat down beside me.

"Are alright with sleeping alone? I know message was unsettling and all," Oliver said and rubbed the back of his neck.

"I have to be," I sighed.

"No you don't. You could call Tyler and he could-" He started but I cut him off.

"No. I don't want to wake him up. He's probabaly asleep," I said quietly. I layed back into my bed and shuffled under the covers slowly.

I only slept with a thin blank since my room was normally pretty warm but tonight, there was an odd chill that clung to the air. I shivered against my will and curled up into a ball under the sheets. Suddenly I was covered in a blanket of heat and I opened my eyes to find that Oliver had layed down beside me. When I didn't protest, he draped an arm across my waist and I fell asleep instantly.
