Chapter 11
I shivered and Oliver wrapped his arms around me, trying to warm me. Ty was pacing the floor infront of my bed, where Oliver and I were currently laying. I had called Ty right after Oliver informed me of my Talisman issue. I didn't tell him exactly what the situation was until he had gotten here because I didn't want him to panic, like he was doing at the moment, in the car and get into an accident.
"W- will you please s- stop pacing? Y- your making me n- nervous," I chattered. Ty stopped and sat down on my bed, his head resting in his hands.
"Ty, come on. Oliver said there might be a way to reverse it. P- please calm down," I pleaded.
"How am I supposed to calm down when my best friend might only have a few weeks to live?" He said quietly, his voice strained.
"I... I don't know. But please try. For me?" I said softly.
He nodded his head and looked up at me, his eyes glassy. "What does Oliver say we can do?"
I turned to face Oliver and he sat thinking for a moment. "We could get Sam to reverse it with a Talisman of Life, but I doubt he'd do it. The only one who can place a counter Talisman on you is the person who put the first one there in the first place," He said quietly.
I repeated what Oliver had said to Ty and he shook his head. "There has to be something else we can try."
"Well," Oliver said, staring at the wall. "Sam might remove it for a price. Most likely a sacrfice."
"No way," I said shaking my head.
"No way what?" Asked Ty.
"Nothing," I sighed and turned back to Oliver. "Anything else?"
"If we can find pre written Talisman of Life, once you die, you can be brought back. But that's very hard to do and Talismans of Life are very rare," He sighed. "Very few people even know what it looks like."
"So there is nothing I can do huh?" I said quiety and Ty's head shot up.
"There has to be something!" He shouted and jumped up from his seat.
"Ty, it's over. There's no other way," I said firmly.
"I refuse to believe that Catalyst," He said, setting his jaw. "Would you if you were in my position?"
I sighed and shook my head slowly. "No... I wouldn't give up until the end."
"And neither will I," Ty stated in a hard voice.
Ty started pacing again, deep in thought. I sighed softly and layed my head against Oliver's chest, absorbing his warmth. I looked up at him and he sighed saddly.
"I'll find a way Catalyst. Count on it," Oliver whispered softly in my ear. I simply nodded and scooted even clse to him, shivering. He enveloped his arms around me and I felt warm and safe.
"Hey Oliver?" I said quietly.
"Yeah Cat?" He inquired.
"What will you do when I'm gone?" I asked in a whisper, careful not to let Ty hear me.
"It won't come to that," He said, dragging a hand down my spine.
"But if it does?" I questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"Then I'll go back to wandering, I guess," He said quietly, sqeezing his eyes shut.
"So I won't become a spirit?" I asked.
"You might, you might not. It's a fifty fifty shot. But if you did, I would search for you," He said and pressed his lips to my forehead lightly, only causing a soft shock of heat.
"I'm sorry Oliver," I said quietly, my eyelids drooping.
"Shhhhh...," Oliver cooed and tangle his fingers in my hair. I felt my hair lift up slightly but I assumed it was the most I would feel besides heat.
I yawned and switched positions so I wasfacing away from him and he was curled around me. I pillowed my arms under my head with a sigh and closed my eyes. I felt Ty lean down and kiss the top of my head before he left but I didn't open my eyes. I shuddered and finally drifted off into a fitful sleep.
I stumbled across a cobblestone path that led to a small cottage in the thick of a forest. I arrived at the door and I reached out to knock but it swung open before I could. I stepped inside cautiously and glanced around. The entire building was empty and open, no rooms in sight. I jumped as the door behind me slammed shut as if a gust of wind, unfelt by me, had blown across it. When I turned back to face the center of the room, I saw that a woman had appeared. Not just any woman. My mother.
"Mom?" I croaked.
She frowned and shook her head. "There is no time to process Catalyst. I need you to listen to me, and listen closely."
I nodded and she smiled warmly at me. "Atta girl," She beamed. "Now, as you know, you're not a normal girl."
"No kidding," I snorted.
My mother gave me a stern look and strode closer to me, ignoring my comment. "You're special, darling. More than you thought. You abilities extend father than just the Sight," She said softly.
"What else can I do?" I asked, dumbfounded.
"You can draw Talismans, Catalyst," My mother said and placed er hand just above my Talisman of Death. "You can cure youself, dear."
"But how? I don't even know what to draw them with," I said quietly.
"You will know," She smiled and slid her hand closer to my Talisman.
"Mom?" I shuddered and she smiled at me.
"Yes dear?'" She inquired.
"Please don't go," I whispered.
She grinned and placed her hand on my Talisman. "I'm already gone."
My shoulder began to burn and I cried out, falling to my knees. I looked up, tears in my eyes, and saw that my mother had burned away and in her place was Sam, grinning manically. The cottage began to fade and the image of a beautiful symbol flashed across my eyes quickly.
My eyes flew open and I gasped, pulling myself into a sitting position. Oliver dashed to my side, a beyond worried look on his face.
"Are you alright?" He asked. I didn't speak but rose my hand up to my Talisman of Death, cupping my han over it, careful not to touch it.
Oliver's eyes grew even more frantic and he put his hands on my shoulderes. "Catalyst, what's wrong? Are you in pain? Is it the Talisman?" He rushed in one breath.
I laughed breathlessly and shook my head. "I'm fine. It was just a dream," I said quietly.
"What was it about?" Asked Oliver, leaning back against my bedpost, obviously more relaxed now.
"It was my mother," I said softly, knitting my brows together, trying to comprehend the dream. "She told me I can draw Talismans Oliver! She said I would know what to do when the time comes."
"Are you sure it wasn't just a fever dream Cat?" He asked softly.
"I'm positive. It was her Oliver," I stated, completely convinced.
A grin broke out across his face and he jumped up off my bed. "Do you know what this means?" He exclaimed.
"I can save myself?" I guess.
"Yes!" Oliver exclaimed.
I smiled at him but the smile began to fade as I began to think. "When exactly is this 'right time'?" I wondered aloud.
Oliver frown and shoved his hands through his hair. "My guess is right before you die."
"At least when the internet cuts out I say that I'm dying, it won't really be a lie," I snorted. Oliver stared at me in horror and I shook my head in apology.
"Sorry. I make bad jokes when I'm in bad situations," I shrugged sheepishly.
Oliver let out a sigh and pointed to my phone on the side table. "I assume we should tell Tyler about your life saving dream now?"
I nodded and called Ty, explaining the whole dream to him. When I finished my tale, he shouted happily and told me he'd be over in twenty. I laughed as he hung up and I sat my phone back onto the table. My laugh inevitably morphed into a fit of coughs, which sent Oliver racing to my side.
I waved a hand at him and forced a smile. "I- I'm fine! R- really!" I weezed out between coughs. When my coughing fit passed, Oliver relaxed a little but stayed close to my side, keeping a watchful eye on me. I giggled and shook my head at him, staggering to my feet. I strode into the kitchen with a blanket wrapped around me and scowered the pantry for some randow junk food snacks to eat for breakfast.
I ended up grabbing a few slices of bread and tearing them into a bowl. I douced them in sugar and poured milk over it, yawning.
Oliver raised an eyebrow at me as I ate my makeshift cerel and snorted.
"You're such a weirdo," He laughed.
I grinned and tossed my hair over my shoulder. "I'm aware of this."
