MANHATTAN WAS IN total chaos.
Screaming individuals charged about all over the place, stampeding to get away from the crossfire. Vehicles were being tossed everywhere, and explosions occurred left and right, and the ground shook as veins split along the landscape; being forced apart by huge spines of Earth shooting up from below.
Eleanor had now changed into a new set of clothes, thanks to the nurse earlier who was very kind to hand her what she had. Once she had made sure that Peter was going to be taken care of, she rushed out of the hospital and opted to levitate towards the location of the violent altercation.
Yet, as soon as her eyes darted down to the fleeing crowd, she noticed a blonde-haired woman crying in anguish, all bloody and bruised. She was sitting beside a car, her face wet with her tears. Eleanor glided over to her, raising her hand to telekinetically move aside the people running towards her and the woman. Crouching down, the brunette checked the bleeding wound on the female's forehead.
Crimson liquid oozed out profusely and Eleanor was certain that the woman would lose consciousness in a few minutes. The mutant couldn't just leave her in such state. Her conscience would kill her and so she decided to help the woman first before finally confronting her daughter and Jean.
"Can you walk, miss?"
"No, I sprained my ankle." weakly replied the female. "And I feel dizzy."
"Alright, what's your name?"
"Daniella."
"Okay, Daniella, let's get you to safety." Eleanor gently held the back of the blonde's head and laid her down on the ground. With a sharp curl of her fingers, Daniella was lifted in the air instantly in a recumbent position and Eleanor covered her with a psionic shield. Weaving her way through the crowd, she spotted an ambulance not far away.
"Sir, this woman needs medical assistance!" shouted Eleanor while she avoided a bolting man screaming for his life.
A team of paramedics sprinted over to her, bringing a wheeled stretcher behind them. Eleanor carefully settled Daniella on it, letting out a sigh of relief when the medical team ushered her away. Nodding, she spun around to leave until she heard one of them speak.
"Wait! I know you who you are! You're Eleanor Lehnsherr!" The brunette paused in her tracks to listen to the talking man. "Your people caused trouble again! You mutants indeed bring nothing, but absolute chaos!" He accused. "Us, innocent humans, who simply want to live in peace are always caught in the crossfire!"
Eleanor pursed her lips. She understood his anger for it was true. Thousands of human lives were lost after the catastrophic actions of En Sabah Nur eleven years ago. Among them were those who supported mutants, casual about their existence, and just wanted peace.
She raised her hand and kindly told him, "I have no time to argue with you, sir. Let's set aside our differences and prioritize that woman's health first. Thank you."
And with that, she left them all, carrying a heavy burden in her heart. She knew that the government would not trust them again after this, but they can all deal with them later on. Eleanor soared high up in the air, immediately catching a glimpse of Anastasia and Jean.
Both of the girls had their hands on each other's necks and the cosmic flames surrounding them grew volatile. It was as if they were trying to extract the Phoenix force from one another. Her lips slightly hung open as she concluded that they both possessed the otherworldly entity in them just the different sides. She flew to their area and saw Erik and the Genoshan citizens attacking Charles and the X-Men team. Eleanor landed on their middle just in time to swerve her hand to the right, telekinetically diverting the path of an incoming subway car towards her.
The train flew straight to a building not far away from them and crashed through the outside wall, exploding just as Eleanor tilted her head to Erik and her son, Alex.
"What on earth are you all doing?!"
Her vociferous, startling voice resonated throughout the whole assault, causing them all to stop. Their serious visage changed that into of shock as they all stared at her even her own husband who she noticed was wearing the helmet that made him Magneto again.
"I just had a coma for like what? Four days and a half and this shit happens? What the fuck?!"
"You're awake..."
Eleanor rolled her eyes, fuming. "Yeah, no shit Sherlock." She retorted. Their actions caused other people around them to suffer.
"Thank you for that very astute observation, Erik. Top marks! Yes, I am awake and it's been a very long couple of days. I promise we'll all talk about it over tea and crumpets." bellowed the woman, looking at all of them in disappointment.
"For now... Erik, why the hell are you tolerating Anastasia's -- " She suddenly paused when she caught no sight of her daughter and her former student in the air. "Where are they? Where's Ana and Jean?"
And exactly at that moment, a stunning flash blasted them all across the pavement, slammed by some indescribable force. Eleanor tasted blood, dust, and dirt. Her lungs burned and she realized they've all been knocked into the ground. She felt slightly dizzy, her ears rang from a roaring boom in the night. The brunette felt, heard and saw what happened before she realized what actually happened.
"Eleanor! Eleanor!"
"Mom!"
The woman turned to see Erik, Alex, and Nathaniel scramble over to her. She felt him pull her close, his hands cupping her face. "Are you okay? Talk to me, El!"
"Mom! Are you okay?"
"Yes, yes! I'm okay!" panted Eleanor, sitting up and clutching his arm. Her back ached from the sudden impact, but she was fine. "What just happened?" She asked, focusing her gaze at the location of the explosion. "Where's Ana? Have you seen her?"
"No, we haven't. She's not around, mom." apprised Alex.
Then, out of the rising wispy smoke, came a group of humans led by a white, platinum haired woman. Eleanor furrowed her eyebrows as she grabbed tighter onto Erik's arm for she couldn't read the woman's mind. Shocked with this discovery, she glanced at Charles who was several feet away from them. He shook his head, confirming that his telepathy didn't work too on the newly-arrived woman.
Ever so slowly, Eleanor and Erik got up on their feet and rejoined the others, pushing Nathan and Alex behind them. Valerie and her youngest child, Sophia helped Charles return to his wheelchair and they all observed the intruders in apprehension.
"You're not a human nor a mutant." Charles proclaimed, pushing two of his fingers on his temple. "What are you?"
"We're... beyond this world of yours."
Silence fell on all of them and Eleanor remembered Wanda's words before she left the realm of Madness earlier. This was further strengthened when her firstborn son commented, "Great. They're aliens."
"How do you know?" Ariki softly queried, his braids lifting themselves in defense.
"Charles just said they aren't humans or mutants. I'm assuming Nathan here have felt their emotions, yes?" Valerie explained. Eleanor noticed how her friend's hands steadily moved to her retractable batons attached to her waist. She actually wanted to compliment how her all-white, skintight jumpsuit looked nice, but deemed it could wait until later.
"Yep, and it's screaming alien, auntie."
"So, we have witches, gods, and now aliens." murmured Eleanor under her breath. "Fantastic. Just fantastic."
"What do you want from us?" Nathaniel bravely questioned, taking a step forward. He was still in his army uniform and visibly looked sleep-deprived based on the dark circles beneath his eyes. To be quite honest, he looked like he just woke up. She felt bad for her son who was maybe resting earlier and was suddenly called about Anastasia's attempt to take down Jean.
"I don't need anything from you, you pathetic fools. I only need them." She raised her eyebrow and two of her people dragged two semi-conscious figures across the concrete. "I'd highly advise for you not to interfere, human. It's better for you to just accept your fate especially when we take over your world and transform it into ours." Eleanor's eyes widened when she realized it was her daughter and Jean.
"Let them go!" She yelled and struggled against Erik's grasp since he took ahold of both of her arms, not letting her go.
"Oh, I'll let them go." the leader smirked, lifting her hands. "After I take what I need."
Slamming her hands on Jean and Anastasia's shoulder, a rupture of fire-gold light flashed before their eyes, almost blinding them and an ear-piercing cry shattered the still night air into countless shards. Valerie was the first to react among them and blasted them all away from Anastasia and Jean using her forcefield. Eleanor then casted a long scarlet rope, wrapping it around the two girls' bodies. With a small tug, she pulled them both towards her.
And another set of havoc ensued.
The group of aliens attacked them all simultaneously and of course, they fought back. The three male members of her family surrounded Eleanor, acting as a barricade. The brunette's sole focus was on Jean and Anastasia that she didn't have the time to look around. She felt the rise in temperature around her and screams of anguish spread everywhere.
Not long after, she finally got Anastasia and Jean. "Ana, Jean, wake up! Wake up!" Yet, none of the two would open their eyes. Eleanor's thoughts then reverted back to what Wanda told her and almost immediately, she shielded herself from the fight, working to find a way on how to cast out the Phoenix force from Ana and Jean.
"Come on! How do I do this?" She groaned, shutting her eyes. I really should've asked Wanda first how to do this stuff. She internally told herself. Placing her hands just above their abdomen, she reached down once again to the core of her power. Was there a spell or a certain gesticulation she needed to perform? A ritual? Maybe wish for it?
I wish for the Phoenix to leave Earth.
Nothing happened.
"Come on, work! Dammit!"
Again, she wished... even prayed for it, but still there was no sign that it was working. "Really?" Eleanor then exasperated. "You decided to be a bitch at a time when I need you the most?"
"Eleanor!"
Desperate to keep them away from this new arrived enemy, she called for her son and friend to come close. "Selene! Alex! Get Jean and Ana out of here! Take them somewhere very far right now! I'll follow you both later!"
"But -- "
"Just do it!"
Nodding, Alex used his magnetism to levitate Jean and Ana, bringing them with him as he left with Selene. She then centered her focus on the altercation in front of her and was almost cut in half by one of the shapeshifting alien's blade if not for her quick reflexes. The sharp weapon landed on her right and she casted a ball of pure plasma energy against her opponent, sending him crashing against a wall.
She noticed Valerie confronted the white-haired leader herself with her expandable bo staff. Both of them attempted to one-up the other, but they were an equal in terms of strength and agility. It was a fair fight. Deciding to join their brawl, Eleanor hurled two scarlet orbs at the shapeshifting alien, striking her directly in the head and the chest. The sheer force of her throw was enough to send the alien inside the window of a restaurant.
The brunette jogged up to her friend, arching an eyebrow. "Is she dead?" She asked, referring to the enemy they had just encountered.
"Hopefully." uttered Valerie, twirling her staff. "It's good to have you back, Eleanor, and just in time for the action."
Eleanor shrugged. "Yeah, well, how's the tea party with Ares and Poseidon?"
"Ares and Poseidon? Why would I meet with them?"
"You didn't?"
"No."
The woman blinked, furrowing her eyebrows. She remembered Wanda telling her that the two Greek gods were after Valerie. She remembered not encountering Morgana too, not even once. Was Wanda wrong? And if she was... then what on Earth was really going on now?
"That's weird. Are you -- "
"Freeze! Don't move!"
The two women snapped their heads towards the source of the voice, utterly confounded. Military men arrived in the area, guns drawn and ready to fire. Eleanor noticed that the aliens earlier have disappeared as if they had sensed the humans coming and fled to avoid capture.
"Hands in the air!"
"Get down on your knees!"
At this point, Nathan stepped up to them, hands raised in surrender. Eleanor knew his son knew them personally for they were his comrades. "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!"
"Get down on your knees, Lieutenant Xavier! All of you!"
"Sir! We found Grey and Xavier!"
"Good! We need a clean sweep on the last three blocks!
"No!" cried Eleanor, walking over to the military men. "You have to get them out of here! We're not the enemies!"
A rifle was then pointed directly at Nathaniel's chest, causing Eleanor to pause in her tracks in shock. Instinctively, she threw her hand forward and curlicues of red light swirled around her hands.
Just at that moment too, all the rifles were levitated in the air. "Shoot my wife and I will make sure you all won't live to see tomorrow." Erik proclaimed, using his magnetism to cock all the firearms.
His eyes were murderous and she was more than certain he wasn't afraid to shoot the humans if it meant that she was safe and alive. Even Alex beside him had his fist raised, ready to unleash the power he was currently holding back.
"Erik Lehnsherr, drop the weapons now!"
"Listen first, you fools!"
"We're under new orders now. Get on your knees, Lieutenant." And the head of the team pushed the end of his rifle to Nathaniel's chest, causing Eleanor to take a step further for intervention. Yet, her son raised his hand to stop her, signalling that he was okay.
"There's a new enemy out there, Victor! You need to listen to us -- "
That's when a series of shots came out from their weapons and the next thing Eleanor felt was a sharp sting on her shoulder.
The mother pulled out whatever was embedded in her skin and stared at it for a moment, recognizing it as a tranquilizer dart. Her eyes travelled to her companion whose eyes drooped before she stumbled forward and collapsed on the ground. Eleanor's vision blurred and the voices around her became a buzzing noise. Her knees gave way and she fell on her side, but not before seeing Erik meters away from her being subdued by a couple of soldiers.
Then, the world went black.
