14. Old Bones

•Après Moi, Le Déluge•

"Aphrena...I have done something pretty bad and I wanted to tell you before I told anyone else." I looked at Hayley with my eyebrows furrowed.

"What's the matter?" I sit down on my bed and pat the spot next to me for her to sit. "You know you look stressed and that's not good for the babies."

"I know and, um, don't get mad but it has to do with Elijah." I couldn't think of what she could have done that was so bad except kiss or sleep with him.

"Depends what you did." I rub her shoulder to calm her down.

"Sophie called me and asked me for a favor. She promised me that she would help break the curse that Marcel put on our people in exchange for some information. And I didn't think anything of it, but then Davina started doing those pictures of Celeste--she wanted to find Celeste's remains, so I went through his journals, and I found out where he buried her, and then I told her. I know it was stupid and it was snoopy, And I should have just asked him. I just did whatever for our people without thinking." She rambled.

"You should have asked Hayley. Celeste meant a lot to Elijah. Do you know how upset he is going to be with you?"

"I did it so Sophie didn't ask you and I did it for our people. Now--now I feel so guilty." I nod and and pat her head.

She leans her head on my shoulder as I talk, "Well, you are going to have to tell him. You weren't there to see his memories. I was. I saw how much he loved and cared for her and as much as it hurts to think about their bond...you should have told someone. I will not saying anything. That my friend is up to you. Piece of advice: Don't expect forgiveness so soon from him."

"You are being very helpful you know that?"

I laughed and rolled my eyes. "What are big sisters for?"

•••

As I was walking I heard Elijah talking, "If you were trying to win the girl's trust, perhaps poisoning her one true love was not the most splendid idea."

"Oh. Are there any more inopportune deaths you'd like to wave in my face?"

"Give me a month. I'll get you list." I laugh slightly. Funny Elijah. Me likey.

"Young, old, dead, or alive, witches are a pain in the ass."

"Put a sock in it Klaus!" I yell out going into Davina's room. I heard her break something as I entered. "Hey, D." She starts coughing and hunches over. "What's wrong?"

Marcel and I go to her side. "Davina, Davina!"

"What's with all the racket?" Klaus ask entering the room. Davina starts vomiting dirt and coughing even more. "Bloody hell." I rub her back trying to help as Marcel looks her over.

The house begins to shake, like there's an earthquake. And I pull Davina in my arms as Marcel and Klaus run out the room.

"Davina!" I yell before she passes out.

•••

The house shakes, like the apparent earthquake before and Davina yells out. I hold her in my arms as she sweats and I rub her shoulders.

"Hey. Shh. It's ok. You're ok." I say calmly. "Kitten." I say softly and just like that, it stops.

"That helped." She smiled. "You calling me kitten helped, luna." I nodded and laid her back down still rubbing her shoulders.

"We will get through this, D. I promise."

Rebekah came in and talk to Davina about the stages and about the harvest and of course I didn't want Davina to do it but Rebekah had a point.

Rebekah takes out a needle and grabs her arm. Davina moves away from it and closer to me freaking out.

"What-what is that?" she says as she starts panting.

"The more upset you become, the faster you deteriorate. I compelled up some sedative."

"No, no, no!"

"Rebekah! She was doing just fine with me. You are working her up more." I said.

"We keep her calm, we keep her alive." She said to me.

"Stop, please." Davina begs while she pants. The wind starts storming through making things slam and things fall over. "No, please!" She cries out.

"Do it!" I yell out and Rebekah shoves the needle in instantly calming her breaths and the wind down. She slowly starts to fall asleep and I move off the bed.

I found Hayley crying and I assumed she told Elijah and he didn't take it to well, as I expected. "It's ok, Hayley. He'll forgive you within time." She nods and wipes her tears away.

"He-he is just a really good friend and I did this to him. I didn't want him to get mad at you. And these pregnancy hormones are really kicking me hard." I hugged her and tried to calm her down.

"Hey, why don't we get food for the people out there? Huh?" She nods and we get some cans to pack in a box.

While in the middle of packing she starts to cry again and my head falls in defeat. I really hate pregnant Hayley right now.

"What are you doing?" Klaus asks as he sees us with the food.

"We were gonna take these to the--"

"If you say, "Bayou," I will find a nice comfy dungeon and throw you both in it. This is not the night to be out there."

"For anyone." She said turning to look at him as I continue to put cans in. She looked back at me then down to the cans. "But some people don't have a choice."

"Right." Klaus picks up the box we were working on and we look at him confused. "Grab that lot and come with me." He tells us taking the box out. We each grab a box and head out.

We went to St. Annes church. We walked down the aisle and I looked at the people around us.

Father Kieran spots us and heads toward us. "We still haven't gone through all that you've already provided, Klaus."

Klaus hands the boxes over to Kieran. "Well, this newest bit isn't from me."

"Oh?" He turns around to set them down before looking at me and Hayley. "That's very kind of you Aphrena and..."

"Hayley. And these people are?"

"I asked Father Kieran to give them shelter. He suffers from an incessant desire to do good, but now I need you to be useful. Marcel and Davina have disappeared. I assume from the stupefied look on your face they haven't sought refuge in your attic." Klaus says.

"No. Those days are gone."

"Then energize your resources. I don't need to remind you how important it is they be found."

"Yeah." He says before walking off.

"These people, they're werewolves, and the priest, he said that you donated the food. You're helping them?" I asked.

"They're not your werewolves. They're my clan from very far back. They've fallen upon hard times, and their plite has brought out the philanthropist in me. What can I say? Must be Elijah's influence." Klaus says walking past us.

"What do you mean your clan?" Hayley says turning to look at him.

"The blood that runs in their veins runs in mine..." He turns around. "And in our children."

"This family gets more complicated by the second." I say sarcastically.

He walks up to her and cups her face. "Listen, Hayley."

"Yeah, no. I just...gotta blast." I say before speeding out. I don't feel like watching that, it makes me feel like a third wheel.

•••

I stood under an umberella with Elijah, Rebekah has her own and Hayley shares one with Klaus. Father Kieran stood in front of us above Esther's coffin with a crucifix. I snuggle into Elijah's side as the thought of this not working overwhelms me.

"Are you ready to do this?" Kieran asks.

Klaus takes a dagger to his hand and looks at his siblings. "Always and Forever."

He slices his hand then hands it to Rebeka who does the same then Elijah then Hayley. Kieran takes the dagger and throughs it in with the coffin.

"It is done."

•••

In the cemetery the thunder gets louder and fire starts to appear.

"Fire." Sophie says then Marcel turns the corner with Kitten in his arms. He sets her down and Sophie puts the ceremonial Athame over fire before walking to Davina.

Tears start to build in my eyes as I watch.

"Do you believe in the harvest?"

Davina nods. "I believe." Sophie puts the Athame to her neck and slices her neck causing me to flinch and she falls back into Marcel's arms.

I hope this works.

The rain stops and we move the umbrella's down. A golden hue passes through Davina's arms and into the earth. They put Davina with the rest of the girls so that we could finish.

"After the harvest come the reaping. Their sacrifices made and accepted, we call upon our elders to resurrect your chosen ones." Sophie looks down but nothing happens. I look at Sophie and the hope I have gets weaker. "We call upon our elders to resurrect your chosen ones." She says again. "Resurrect your chosen ones." I snifle a little when absolutely nothing happend. "Please. I beg."

My mouth falls open and tears come rushing down my eyes when Sophie starts to cry over Monique.

It didn't work...

I walk over to Marcel and hug him burying my face into his neck. We both lost her. My little kitten. He looks at Klaus before hugging me back and vamping off with me. If I stayed I wouldn't be able to handle it.

When we enter the compound he starts breaking things and I just dop to the floor with my hands through my hair as I cry.

"That won't bring her back, you know?"

"Shut up, Klaus!" I said wiping the tears away and standing up to walk behind Marcel instead of being near Klaus.

"This is your fault. I should have never let you anywhere near her."

"Marcel--"

"This city was fine before you came. We were fine! Davina was safe! She was in control! If you hadn't gotten her worked up, if you hadn't killed that boy!"

"My condolences the girl is gone, but don't lose perspective. We still have our community. The vampires of this town--"

"I don't care about the vampires! She is dead! Do you hear me?" I sit down in a chair and rub my head as a headache pierces through me. I look over to see Klaus hugging Marcel.

"I'm sorry." He says. "You may think I know nothing of your grief, but you are wrong." They release and I get up to go to my room.

She's gone. She was family. She was my little kitten. And now. Now she is gone.

•••

I laid in bed as silent tears went down my cheeks. I stared at the ceiling just thinking about What it was like before they came. How peaceful it was.

Light footstep came to my door and I diverted my eyes to see a shadow but I didn't move my head. A knock on the door was heard and then Elijah came in.

"Hey." I said weakily.

"Hi." I sat up bringing my knees to my chest and Elijah sat down wiping my tears away. "I'm sorry about Davina, Aphrena. I really am."

"I just miss her so much already. She was like my little sister."

"I understand." He looks into my eyes and stares for a bit. "You know I talked to Hayley earlier and something she said caught my attention."

"What?" I asked curiously trying to get my mind off kitten.

"Something along the lines of 'I take what I want.' And I thought maybe I should give it a try." I tilt my head to the side confused until He places his hand on my cheek with gentle kiss on my lips.

My lips start to feel tingly and warm with his touch. I move a little so my knees were on the bed and pressed my body closer to his, taking his jacket in my hands. Our lips move together and everything felt good. Almost normal. Being in his arms felt safe and like electricty. This is what I have been waiting for without even knowing it.

We pulled away taking in air and he pressed his forehead against mine and I let out a big smile.

"I think we all should talk to Hayley more often." I said before pressing my lips against his again.
