She's Back

"What are you doing here?" Mikey manages to ask despite the constriction in his throat. He hasn't seen her in over three months and the last time they spoke, well it wasn't really speaking. It was more like a loud verbal wrestling match between them. Both  shouted and no one listened.

"I uh... Heard about your new job and wanted to congratulate you." she says, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Yea thanks." The silence in the hallway is deafening. Mikey starts to think about the particulars of their last conversation. Of how his love alone wasn't enough to keep her happy or to keep her at all. Four years. His heart rate starts to increase signifying the anger that still dwelled within him. He takes a deep breath and he starts to calm the rough sea of pain that threaten the shoreline of his peace of mind. Chrissy clears her throat which brings Mikey back to the present.

"You gonna stand out here all night?" she asks.

Mikey shakes his head. "No... yea".

He walks to his door and fumbles with his keys from his pants pocket. She steps out of his way so he can unlock the door.

"Come in he says tightly" as the air escapes his lungs. The scent of her gets stronger due to their close proximity.

"Nice place".

Mikey sighs. "thank you". Its the place we were supposed to share together but...

"You look good Michael"

"Yea, uh you too". The awkwardness is so thick in the air you could cut it with a knife.

"Do you want something to drink? Water? Orange juice?"

"Water would be nice".

Mikey walks to the kitchen, and opens the refrigerator. Chrissy takes a seat at the kitchen counter. She sighs. As Mikey grabs the jug of water he starts to hear quiet sobs. He turns to look at her.

" Chrissy?"

She wipes her eyes. "Water please?"

Mikey pours a glass of water and hands it to her from the opposite side of the counter. Their fingers brush against each other, and a familiar shock travels up his spine. You can tell she feels it too as both look up at each other at the same time.

It feels like a lifetime before Mikey breaks the gaze between them turning his attention to the very interesting ring of water on the counter top left by her glass.

"Mikey.... I.... I'm sorry" Chrissy starts with a lump in her throat.

"I never meant to hurt you. I never wanted to.... "

" So why did you? " Mikey asks as his heart rate begins to rise again.

" I'm sorry. Its just that when your father died, you got so depressed. I didn't know how to deal with it. I didn't know how to help. You got distant. I'm so sorry"

Mikey shakes his head at her excuses. The ones he was tired of hearing.
"You didn't have to deal with it in anyway! All you had to do was stay! I begged you to stay!" Mikey shouts. Chrissy jumped spilling some of the water.

Mikey calms a little as he sees that he scared her. "I'm sorry" Mikey says grabbing a hand towel and wiping the spill.

"It's ok. I deserve it. I deserve the hell I've been in these past months."

"What hell? You got everything you wanted. The happiness. The man of your dreams."

"Mikey please" she pleaded. "The thing with Matthew.... It... It was a mistake".

Mikey rolls his eyes. Chrissy gets up from her position and walks around the counter to stand before him. Mikey's breath catches in his throat.

"It was Mikey. After we broke up. I haven't felt like myself. I haven't been going to church. I haven't been praying. I've been going places I shouldn't have with him"

"Take it up with God then."

At that comment, the tears Chrissy was trying so desperately to hold in start to spill out. She buries her head in his shoulder. Gripping his shirt. Mikey was unsure of what to do. One half wanted to grab her and hold her tightly,  the other wanted to push her away, to tell her to leave. What am I to do God? She's here. I still love her. Am I to comfort her? She needs it. Maybe I should... It doesn't mean anything if I just... Mikey lifts his hands to her waist and slowly wraps them around her petite waist. At this gesture, Chrissy collapses in his arms. He holds steady against her weight. He then lifts her up and carries her to the settee.
There he sits with her curled up in his lap. Her face buried in his neck. The scent of her assaults his nose. He doesn't know how much time has passed. He's still in his dress pants and shirt from work. He looks down at her, and starts to admire her familiar features. Then he notices she's not crying anymore. He brushes a few strands of hair behind her ears. Her eyes flutter open. Chrissy smiles when she sees Mikey looking down at her with the compassion she missed so dearly. His brows start to furrow with confusion.

"Why are you smiling?" Mikey asks admiring her dimpled cheeks.

Chrissy shakes her head and reaches up to touch his jaw. She starts to inch closer to his face. Before Mikey could react, she kisses him.

The electricity he felt before races up his spine, but with more force. He returns the kiss. He relishes in the familiarity of her lips. She starts to stroke his chest through his shirt, then she gently tugs his neatly tucked shirt from his pants. She reaches beneath. Both moaning at the skin to skin contact. She stops and gets up to stand before him. She tugs at him to stand up before him. She takes off her blouse and then begins to unbutton his shirt, to display his fading six pack, covered with a thin layer of fat.

Meanwhile  Mikey's mind is numb. The suppressed feelings have taken over his body. The love he feels for her, the need to be close to her, and more so the pain he has felt all unleashed from her touch. In one swift motion he picks her up and walks in the direction of their room.
