Chapter Nineteen
Dana finished hugging Jesse and Summer goodbye. Colt had already said his goodbyes and had gotten in his car.
"Hey, Colt!" Dana called, jogged down the stairs, and down to the driveway.
"Yeah?" he asked, his car door halfway open.
Dana put her hands on top of the car door and looked down at him. She took a deep breath and squeezed the door. "Jesse said something to me earlier that made me really ashamed of myself."
"Jess tends to have that effect on people. Friggin' Boy Scout," Colt said, looking at the house. "What the hell did he say to you? Do I need to punch him for you?" he demanded.
"No. I deserved it really," She said tearing up.
"What the hell did he say to you?" Colt asked angrily, getting out of the car. He took hold of her upper arms and turned her to face him.
"Colt, I've known you since I was eight years old, but I really don't know anything about you. I'm so sorry about that. Because I wasted those years. You could have been my friend and I denied us that. I just wanted to tell you. I'm really, really sorry," she said, tears falling.
"Hey, come on. Don't do that," he said, stepping closer towards her and wiped her tears.
She put her head on his shoulder and his arms came around her in a hug.
It felt damn good to have her in his arms. "Hey, you can be my friend now, right?" he said, squeezing her tight.
Dana nodded into his chest. She wiped the tears away. She wanted more from him, but if friendship was all he could offer then she would have to accept it.
He pulled her away from him and forced her to look him the eyes. "It's my fault just as much as yours, Dana. Probably a lot more my fault. But we can't do anything about the past. But we have the future, right?!" He told her. She nodded. "You okay?" he asked, searching her eyes. "Please tell me you're okay."
"Yeah," she answered, forcing a smile as she wiped at her eyes again. "I'm okay."
"Dana, do...do you want to... come over and...maybe have some coffee? Play with my dog?" he asked nervously.
She laughed. "Yeah, I'd like that."
"Hop in," he said, gesturing to his car.
Dana looked back at her car."You sure?"
"Yeah, I'll bring you back later. Jess won't care if you leave your car here."
"Okay. But let me text him real quick or he'll think I got kidnapped right in his driveway. And I've got to get my jacket out of my car."
"Sure." Colt suppressed a grin as he climbed back in his car to wait on Dana.
Dana texted Jesse that she was going somewhere with Colt and would be leaving her car there for a few hours.
She got a brown jacket that matched her skirt from her car and slipped it on as she walked back to Colt's car. He leaned across the seat and opened the door for her.
"Thanks," she said, sliding into the seat.
"No problem," he answered politely. He slung an arm around the back of her seat and reversed the car out of the driveway.
"I saw the nursery," Dana told him.
"Oh, yeah? What'd you think?"
"It's beautiful, Colt. You guys did an awesome job."
"Thanks."
"I didn't know you could draw like that," she confided. He shrugged. "Why don't you draw or paint more? I mean besides houses. You're really talented, Colt."
Colt shifted uncomfortably, but his lip twitched with a suppressed smile that Dana had given him a compliment after all these years. He found pleasure in her liking his paintings. Even though they are cartoons and nothing serious.
"I used to. For fun. Now, I don't know. Not much into it, I guess."
"So, what do you do for fun now then?"
He sent her a flirtatious grin and winked. "Wouldn't you like to know?"
"You're terrible," she laughed. "Seriously! I'd like to know."
"I don't know," he said honestly with a sigh. "I like helping J.R and Jess with the family business. Building things, you know. It's different drawing something than actually building it."
"Have you ever built something you've drawn? I mean yourself, not like a crew doing it from your drawings."
"Yeah, sure. I do little jobs for people myself. You know, like, gazebos, screened porches, small additions, renovations, and stuff. Or I've done what I could and then hired J.R's business and helped work on rest. Some jobs are just too big for me to do all by myself."
"That must be rewarding--being a part of it from start to finish. Seeing something that you created come to life."
He smiled. "Yeah, I guess."
