Chapter Two
After I found out about who I was driving around Chicago, I proceeded to search Nathan Lucero to see exactly what I was dealing with. Margaret Hanna seemed to be hesitant with me when we were talking on the video call a few hours ago, like she was nervous for me to even find out who I was going to drive for this whole week. I definitely wasn't as nervous as I was earlier when chatting with Margaret Hanna, too. For some reason at that time, I wasn't nervous with what I was going to do. I had my fair share of wild people while driving around Chicago, so I knew I could handle it. I definitely could handle a lot of things he would probably bring to my life.
Google provided a lot of brief information about Nathan Lucero. It told me that he had been in a rock band for a few years while he was a teenager but decided to leave to pursue acting, the product being his new movie that was coming out soon, Worlds Apart. Many articles provided little fun facts about him, such as him getting arrested while on the road touring because he was drunk while underage. Hadn't we all done that, though? No? Not everyone? Maybe it was just me to help me get through my tough college courses and my life in general.
Anyway, most of what Google had for me was all the horror stories that he had done as a famous person. All that information didn't scare me, though. I knew a lot of people who did all that and more without getting caught. What worried me was that he was known to treat women as objects instead of real people. That was a huge red flag for me, but I was only going to be his driver. It didn't matter what he thought of me as long as I got paid for getting him everywhere on time. I didn't even have to talk to him because Margaret Hanna was going to provide a limousine to transport Nathan Lucero around Chicago in style. That made it easy for me to have the divider up to keep him out of my way.
I decided to take a quick look at his pictures on Google to see what I was working with in terms of physical abilities. Most of my clients were older men and women who were only focused on business, nothing else. However, Nathan Lucero was around my age, and that meant that I could check him out. Scarlet would have been very proud of me for wanting to find out what he looked like. Though, she would probably berate me for not even knowing who Nathan Lucero was. It wasn't my fault that I didn't care for any pop culture like she did. I was too busy at school to pay attention to what the world was talking about.
Much to my surprise, he had no tattoos as far as I could see without searching for any nudes. He seemed like the guy to have a sleeve, at least. Based on finding out that he was in a rock band, I thought that him and his bandmates would get tattoos to commemorate their genre of music. I was also surprised to see that he wasn't the classic blonde boy that Hollywood loved to shove down people's throats. He had dark, shaggy hair that covered dazzling green eyes. I was shocked to find him so attractive.
I shook my head, hating that my mind already decided that he was sexy. What if that was all he had to him? Most of the people I drove were very much self-centered and didn't care about me or my small business. This was work, though, not anything personal. I had to keep it that way because it would bring about disaster if I let my work travel into my personal life. I learned that the hard way with Scarlet. She opened up her restaurant a few years ago with her fiancé at the time. Unfortunately, he was a terrible guy, leaving her with the restaurant and a broken heart. I had learned from her to keep my two lives separate.
With a sigh, I set my laptop on the coffee table in front of me. That was enough research about Nathan Lucero for tonight. Besides, my back was killing me from hunching in front of my laptop for hours on end to learn more about a man I was probably never going to see again after this week was over. I stood up and lifted my hands above my head, stretching as high as I could. That didn't work to relieve the pain, but I was used to it by now.
Sitting back down on the couch, I pulled my laptop back on me. I lifted my feet up to the couch, so I was laying down to search for academic articles about astrophysics and science. I had to keep my research up and running during the summer to make sure I kept my memory about the thing I loved most: school.
This was my favorite thing to do when I couldn't sleep, reading scientific articles. They always made me very excited to get back to school to continue my degree and learning. I wished I could do summer classes, but I had to have some time to get myself money to pay for school. If I could, I would go to school forever just to keep learning about everything that interested me. That would complete my life, for sure. I couldn't do that, though. So, to make me happy, I would read these articles; it was the closest thing I could get to truly be fulfilled.

"You're still up, Van?" Scarlet asked once she finally unlocked the door. I still stayed seated on the couch, with my feet up on some pillows to relieve my back. It felt like I had been laying here forever, waiting for her to come home. I discarded my laptop a long time ago to just stare up at the ceiling because I tried to go to sleep. "I expected you to be in bed by now."
"Yeah," I answered her. She threw her purse on the ground next to the door that she just slammed shut. "I couldn't really sleep."
"I've heard that before."
"You hear it every night, Scar."
"I know." She lifted my legs up so she could sit underneath them. Her arms laid gently across my shins. This position was familiar to me; even when I was in school, I would still be up by the time she got home from work, and we would sit here until I had to go back to school chatting as the early morning sun rose higher and higher into the sky. Even though she worked days at her restaurant, she would be the last one to leave, meaning she would get home around midnight almost every single night. "For as long as I've known you, I've never really seen you sleep before."
I shrug slightly, locking eyes with her. She had a worried look on her face, which surprised me. This was something normal to me, and she knew it. "I've told you before," I told her with a sigh. "I have never really been able to fall asleep. It takes me hours just to get sleepy in bed."
"We've tried remedies before to help you get to sleep," she said with a nod. Scarlet leaned her head against the back of the couch, letting out a small yawn. She was probably exhausted from working all day at the restaurant. I tried working there for one summer and hated every minute of it. "Did any of them work out for you? I can't really remember right now."
"That's because you fell asleep every single time."
"Not my fault, Savannah."
I sighed and leaned back more against the couch, too. "Not really," I said truthfully to her. "None of them helped me. I think it's because I can't get my mind to quiet down."
"It's because you're much too smart for your own good." She leaned over and tapped my forehead, like that was going to prove her point. I rolled my eyes at her while she grinned at me. "You have too much knowledge in there."
"Right."
"Oh, did you find out who you're going to be driving around Chicago?" Scarlet asked me as she reached forward and grabbed my laptop that was sitting on the coffee table. Balancing my laptop on my shins, she said, "Were you really doing more research for astrophysics?"
"I still have to research even if I'm not doing an internship, Scarlet. I can't lose what I have learned."
"I doubt you would ever forget anything you've learned, Savannah."
I didn't bother with trying to get her to stop looking through my history to see if she could find Nathan Lucero. Thankfully for me, I spent a lot of my time going through pages and pages of research articles that were always being written about the stars and the sky. I always needed to be on top of things so I could be the best at school.
"No way," Scarlet breathed out. She kept glancing at me before returning her gaze to the screen. I assumed she found my search history about Nathan Lucero. I stifled a laugh when she let out a small scream. "No freaking way. You're driving Nathan Lucero around Chicago for a whole week?"
"I assume you know more about him than me with my degree in Google on him."
She laughed, her eyes shining brightly at me. "This is great," she kept muttering as she scrolled through my computer. I was slightly amused by her behavior. Scarlet could get excited about fresh peppers at the grocery store, so this was really nothing for her. It still made me smile because she was such a bright person who made me brighter and happier, too. "This is really great for both of us, Savannah."
"Yeah? How?"
"When do you start driving him around Chicago?" she asked me instead of answering my question.
"I pick him up on Monday at the airport, very early in the morning," I answered her. "That's when my journey with this man starts."
"You better clean up your room just in case you bring him home for a night of fun," Scarlet told me as she stood up, probably to go to bed. I rolled my eyes at her back. Of course, her mind went there right away. She knew that I kept my work away from my personal life. "If you don't want him, send him my way, please. I've been dreaming about meeting him for a long time."
"Sure." Glancing back at me, she shot me a grin that made me smile back at her. I stood up, too, saying, "Do you think he's going to be a little wild while he's here in Chicago?"
"Definitely. That's what he's known for."
"Great. Just what I need."
Scarlet slowly flipped off the lights, leaving the two of us in darkness together. My heart flopped in my chest at the thought of Nathan Lucero. I wasn't nervous about him earlier that night, but with Scarlet telling me that he's wilder than he seems, that made me a little wary about my upcoming week. Even back then, I knew that my life would somehow change with the addition of Nathan Lucero. I just didn't know how.
