「 THIRTEEN 」
Kilo grew tense as the trio entered the Transport Tower. The Transport Tower was the tallest building in the city and served as Heaven's embassy center on Earth. Anyone was welcome to visit the building, but only special guests and their escorts were given access to the transport located on the top level. The rest of the tower served as a museum of Heaven's history with Earth and was free to the general public.
Once inside the tower, Kilo, Castyr, and Miren began searching for ways to access the transport. Kilo spied a lift that was cordoned off and guarded, so he assumed the lift led to a place that was restricted; however, he could not be certain it was the lift they needed. While the angel and star surveyed the lobby, Miren approached the help center and waited to be seen by an agent.
Two, tall men wearing officer's uniforms from Heaven's Division of Defense caught Castyr's attention as they passed the angel and star. The two officers were escorting a human man across the lobby floor; their destination was the guarded lift. "Kilo," Castyr voiced quietly, grabbing his guardian's attention. When Kilo moved his attention to Castyr, the star pointed to the two, tall men and asked, "Aren't they angels?"
Kilo followed Castyr's pointing hand where he quickly spotted the officers, his brows furrowing as he observed the men. When he confirmed the men to be angel officers, Kilo took Castyr's hand and began leading him toward the two angels. Even though the lobby was swarming with visitors, tourists, workers, and school groups, one of the angel officers slowed his pace when he sensed two celestial beings approaching. However, when Kilo and Castyr closed the distance to be roughly a hundred feet, the officer sensed Kilo stop suddenly.
The guardian angel was quick to bring Castyr behind him when chills ran down his spine. "What is it?" Castyr asked, poking his head from behind Kilo. Castyr's eyes widened with fear when he saw five men standing between Kilo and the two angel officers. "Kilo...what's going on?"
Kilo remained silent, but he tightened his grasp around Castyr as he reached his right arm behind his head in preparation to draw his sword. How did they find us? Kilo swallowed dryly as he stared down the demons blocking his path to the transport.
The moment the demons started toward the angel and star, sirens sounded throughout the tower, and red light flooded the large lobby. Travelers and workers began screaming and scrambling to the exits as the sirens blared. The demons looked around in confusion as visitors gushed past them, giving Miren time to rush to Kilo and Castyr and grab them by their arms. The trio pushed past security amidst the chaos and entered a non-guarded lift that took them to the second-highest level.
Miren released a huff of relief as the doors to the lift closed, and quietness filled the small cabin. The three remained silent as the lift shot up the many levels of the Transport Tower before finally landing at the last accessible floor. The floor was fairly empty thanks to the alarms and flashing red lights. The moment the three exited the lift, Kilo scanned the lobby for an emergency stairwell.
The distant sound of sirens could be heard as trio raced across the polished floor when Kilo spotted a stairwell at the opposite end of the lobby. Thankfully, the sounding of the alarm had triggered all egress doors to automatically unlock, so the three were able to access the stairs and race up to the highest level.
The top floor was empty aside from security. In the center of the floor sat a small spaceship that pointed toward a large portal that consumed the entirety of the western wall. The floor's security moved to block the trio as Kilo, Castyr, and Miren neared the stationary ship.
"I am an officer of the Heavens!" Kilo called out. "Please grant us access. We must return to Heaven immediately." Despite Kilo revealing his identity as an angel, the security personnel ignored his words. They refused to budge. Kilo looked at the many security personnel in confusion. Why do they have no reaction?
Clapping hands drew Kilo's focus behind him to see a man casually walking up to the three. "I see not all of Heaven's Lieutenants have forsaken bravery," the red-haired demon mocked as a group of ten soldiers of Hades entered the transport floor.
"What are you doing?!" Castyr called to the guards who did not even blink an eye. "They're demons!"
The lead demon chuckled at the star's futile attempt to wake the guards from their trance. "You see, little star, all the security agents here are at least 25% demon. And well, it gave me the perfect opportunity to test out a new concoction we have been developing. That goes to say, they won't listen to anything but my commands."
Kilo did not hesitate to draw his sword when he realized the security were his enemies rather than friends. The demon smirked when he saw Kilo ready his stance. "Oh, Kilo, do you really think you can defeat me? You don't even have your wings, yet."
Ignoring the taunt from the demon, Kilo addressed his female ally. "Miren, protect Castyr."
"Of course," Miren replied with a nod as she came to stand in front of the small star.
Castyr's heart dropped when he heard Kilo and Miren's exchange. Miren was quick to take Castyr by the wrist and began dragging him away from Kilo. "No...no, no, Kilo!" Castyr reached for his angel as their eyes met. Kilo's purple eyes were filled with sad determination.
"I'll be fine," Kilo said in an attempt to assure his star who shook his head and returned, "No, you won't!"
"Go with Miren. Everything will be okay."
"Stop lying!!" Castyr screamed and fought against Miren who continued to pull him toward the spaceship.
The demons merely watched the angel and star's exchange with their heads tilted in curiosity and amusement. A single tear escaped Castyr's eye as Kilo turned around to face the demons alone. Miren dragged Castyr behind a floor-to-ceiling column as the red-haired demon drew his sword. When the security that was stationed between Castyr and the spaceship drew their guns, Miren was quick to open fire.
"Castyr!" Miren called Castyr's name sternly, causing him to look up at her. "Take this," the human said as she pressed a gun against Castyr's palm.
The last thing Miren needed was to take care of an emotionally fragile star while fighting for both their lives at the same time. So, when he felt the cold metal against his palm, Castyr's resolve strengthened. He knew he needed to do his part. I will fight the demons and get Kilo on the transport, and we'll leave together.
Grasping the gun firmly, Castyr mustered up his courage and engaged in combat alongside Miren. Miren cried out as she was shot in the arm, but she continued firing as more security rushed through the doors. Some joined the demons in fighting Kilo while others supported the ones fighting Miren and Castyr.
Miren's eyes widened when she saw the newly arrived security bring out a blaster and aim it toward her and Castyr. Taking Castyr's hand, the two sprint away from the column as the blaster was fired. The force from the blast knocked Miren and Castyr to the ground as the column was shattered. To Castyr's surprise, no shards or chunks of the column fell on him or Miren.
Opening his eyes, Castyr was shocked to see one of the angel officers from the lobby covering him and Miren with a shield and his outstretched wings.
"Star Castyr, are you alright?" The angel turned to Castyr as his white wings folded against his back and disappeared. Castyr nodded in response before adding, "Thank you." He was in awe of the valiant angel.
The angel helped Castyr to his feet before rushing to the security and defeating them with one fluid motion of his white sword. Miren joined Castyr in staring with awe. However, Castyr's concentration on the angel was broken when a cry from Kilo rang through the air. Whipping toward his angel, Castyr saw Kilo gripping his side. Blood ran between Kilo's fingers, and his face was twisted in an expression of pain.
The white-winged angel raced to Castyr and held the star by the waist as Castyr stated toward Kilo. "You can't go. It's too dangerous," the angel warned as he watched the young guardian be swarmed by demons.
"But-!"
Castyr's protest was interrupted when the doors to the stairwell banged open as the officer's partner entered the transport room with ten demons in pursuit of him. The warrior angel immediately joined Kilo on the front lines. He fought his way to Kilo just in time to defend the guardian from a deadly strike. The warrior turned toward the angel holding Castyr when he gained a small opening. Closing his eyes, the warrior nodded his head solemnly; yet a small, sad smile came to his lips as he gazed at the white-winged angel.
Immediately following the quick gaze shared between the two angel officers, the warrior returned to fighting alongside Kilo as the young guardian whipped around to ensure Castyr was safe. Castyr's throat tightened as he made eye contact with Kilo's purple eyes. Even though it was for a split second, Castyr saw the conflicted emotions swirling within his angel.
"Kilo..." Castyr voiced his guardian's name as he watched Kilo block a blow from a demon's glowing spear.
The white-winged angel tightened his grasp on Castyr as his partner fought to keep the demons from pursuing them; however, a few demons broke through the warrior and rushed toward Miren and Castyr. The angel officer set Castyr down as he faced the approaching demons. The moment Castyr was released, he instantly set his eyes on Kilo. Castyr's eyes widened when he saw a demon sneaking toward Kilo from behind, and his heart dropped. Castyr did not think twice before leaving the white-winged angel and running toward Kilo.
The star sprinted to reach Kilo in time, pushing his body to its limit. Castyr wrapped himself around Kilo as the demon raised his weapon, closing his eyes as the weapon fell. In the split of a second, a white light surrounded the two. The weapon shattered as it hit the light, and the surrounding demons were thrown into the air. Castyr's knees grew weak from the sudden loss of energy, and Kilo caught him as he fell.
"Castyr!" Kilo called out his star's name as he cradled Castyr.
The star looked up to see Kilo's purple eyes gazing down at him, and he sighed with relief. I made it in time.
The breaking of doors made Kilo swing his head to the entry point of the stairwell to see twenty demons entering through the opening. Turning back to the weakened star in his arms, Kilo cried out to the white-winged angel who had saved Castyr from the explosion. "Please save him. He is a star of the Heavens and must get to safety." Kilo's eyes swelled with tears at the thought of Castyr perishing due to his lack of strength and abilities.
As the angel officer hurried to the guardian and his star, Kilo placed his hand on Castyr's cheek and promised, "I'll find you."
Castyr's vision blurred as Kilo handed him to the officer. "Kilo!" Desperation to stay with Kilo engulfed Castyr, but he was too weak to do anything. He could not even keep his hold on Kilo's hand as it inevitably slipped from his grasp. Pain struck Castyr's heart as he stretched out his arm in desperation to reach Kilo.
The officer held Castyr in his arms securely as he turned to his partner whose face was stained with blood. The warrior's gaze was sad but determined as he nodded at the officer and said, "Go. Protect the star."
"Rae-" The officer began to protest, but the loud growling of demons rushing onto the top level called his attention to the stairwell entrance.
"Go!" The warrior shouted as he readied his sword. Stepping in front of his partner, Rae faced the incoming demons head-on. "Go...Ilios."
Kilo joined the warrior in standing in front of the white-winged angel. Kilo took one last glace at Castyr in the angel's arms before shifting his attention to the impending battle. Miren, who had busied herself with breaking into the spaceship, called out to the officer as she powered on the craft and prepared for takeoff. "We gotta go now!"
The moment Ilios and Castyr were aboard the ship, Miren shut the door and began fiddling with the control center. Ilios set Castyr in one of the craft's seats before sealing the door, preventing it from being opened until they had crossed through the portal. The moment Castyr was set down, he used what energy he had to pull himself up and look out the window.
"How do you pilot this thing?" Miren asked frantically as she desperately tried to figure out the craft's command system.
"Telekinesis." After giving the short answer, Ilios took a deep breath and closed his eyes. This was a Heavenly craft designed to be used only by those with telekinetic abilities. This condition ensured that each trip the transport made was overseen by a being of the Heavenly realm.
The ship levitated a few feet off the floor as the officer concentrated on the craft's command system. While Ilios piloted the craft, Castyr frantically looked for Kilo among the horde of demons. He finally found his guardian as the ship moved toward the portal that served as the level's eastern barrier.
Castyr covered his mouth with his hands to stifle his cries as he watched a demon thrust his sword into Kilo's gut. Blood spewed from Kilo's mouth as he dropped to his knees. Kilo!
Moments later, the warrior was also overcome as the ship arrived at the portal. Ilios' ears moved slightly as they heard Rae's cries. The officer clenched his jaw as a single tear trailed down his face. Rae...
The last thing Castyr saw was Kilo's body on the floor in a pool of blood before the ship entered the portal and left Earth. "Kilo!" Castyr's voice failed him as he called out his angel's name. The star choked on tears as the ship picked up speed and entered the realm of the Heavens.
