Chapter 7: Home

Fennec wasn't the only one who had rushed over at the sound of a gun. The scene played in his mind as if he was there when it happened. Dale tried to shoot Rose.

Why?

The whole family circled the living room as if watching a play. Rose ran from her place on the ground & cried into Fennecs shirt. He glared at Dale.

"What did you do?!" Fennec growled. Dale was at a loss for words. His mouth moved, but only pathetic whimpers slipped out. Suddenly Rose turned around, her quiet demeanor giving away nothing... until she snapped.

"You lying, heartbreaking cheat!" She yelled at Dale. Fennec & Red held her back as she tried to get to him. The surprise attack sent Dale to the ground in fear. She turned into a destructive avalanche, insults hurled like rocks. "I found out monsters really do exist, & they live in this house made for a lowlife like you! It's so dirty you have to wipe your feet before you go outside! It's all because of the trash that falls out of the thing you call a mouth! If you exercised as much as you lied, you'd have a chance at winning the Olympics! You're just a slimy little pain in the butt! I hate you!"

She couldn't go anymore. She stopped trying to reach Dale, & collapsed on the floor, causing it to soak in the salty water that fell from her eyes. Holly started crying too, as Rose wasn't the only one confused by the evening events. Calla led her away from the scene, keeping her own eyes focused downward. Reed followed promptly, unwilling to be a part of the drama.

Fennec helped Rose up, both of them burning with fury. Red tried to process what had happened. Calla came back to help up her son, who was breathing heavily, his eyes fixed on the floor.

"Well, Miss Rose, I think you need to learn some dignity. Or anger management. That kind of behavior is unacceptable." Calla brushed herself off. Rose just had to laugh at how biased that comment was.

"You're kidding right? Do you know what just happened?" Fennec could barely suppress his anger.

"You can't control other people. What you can control, is how you react." Calla argued.

"You're not welcome here. You'll have to find somewhere else to stay tonight." Dale spoke up over the argument.

"Why are you doing this? I'm really not as important to you as I thought." Rose wiped her tears away, & ran upstairs. She slammed the door to Dale's bedroom, & instantly collapsed. She covered her mouth so no one could hear her tears. When she needed a break from feeling sorry for herself, she got up & looked for a permanent marker. She left the desk drawer open, too enraged to care. She got up onto Dale's bed & wrote one word on the wall.

      Trust.

Then she took her hand & smeared the marker. "Good luck getting that off." She growled. She turned around to pack her bags, but the first thing she saw was the open drawer, a picture of her & Dale sitting in it. She picked it up, mixed emotions coursing through her. After reminiscing became too much to bear, she carelessly dropped the picture frame, shattering it. She tried her best to fight more tears, but couldn't.

She got some of her clothes wet from the ocean in her eyes, but that wasn't bad compared to what she did to Dale. After taking one last look around his room, she went downstairs. Fennec already had his bag, & he was standing at the door next to Red, a sympathetic look in his navy gaze. Rose walked out the door, refusing to take her wet eyes off the ground.

Fennec & Red followed her, both scared to say something. Dale was sitting on the porch, slouched over. He said something Rose didn't hear, or rather didn't care to hear. She threw her stuff in the back seat of the gray truck & sat in the passenger seat. Rose leaned forward, resting her head on the dashboard, her hair covering her face.

Fennec got in the drivers seat & Red got in the back. When they started pulling away, Rose looked out the window, making eye contact with Dale. They held each other's colorful but despondent gaze until she couldn't see him any more. Rose fought back tears, as she didn't want to cry in front of Fennec & Red.

"You were pretty tough back there." Fennec said, trying to make her feel better. Rose didn't respond.

"Where are we going?" Now Red tried to break the silence.

"You'll see." Was Fennecs short reply. They drove through North City into a rich neighborhood. After a couple of minutes, they pulled into a driveway of a large white fancy house. Getting out of the car & to the door was pretty slow, but when they got to the door, a woman with sunset hair, big furry ears, & a lovely royal blue dress opened the door.

"Welcome home Fennec!"
