Chapter 2

Spring 2020

He unlocked the freezing handle of his apartment door and threw his bag into the corner. H slipped off his shoes and hung up his jacket. Harper popped around the corner holding a bag of chips and a game controller.

"What are you doing here?" Yuki asked annoyed. "Stop breaking in and eating my food!"

"I was kicked out again!" She responded with puppy eyes.

"You have a phone, right? Ask first or wait until I get back from classes. You almost gave me a heart attack!"

"Fine. Whatever."

He walked into his kitchen scavenging the fridge for dinner. He picked up some eggs but before he got to set them on the counter, the building vibrated and not long after, there was a gunshot. Yuki looked down as the lights flickered on and off creepily. Harper started to complain that she hadn't saved her new orchestral piece on the PC. The Tv went to a static and we lost power. She threw her blanket on to the couch and got up. She placed the game controller on top of the Tv and continued stuffing her fave with the chips.

"Would you put the chips down already? Don't you see there is a problem?" Yuki commanded. "Come on let's go see whats going on."

"Do it on your own. Your a witch aren't you? I'm to laaazzzy~" Harper proclaimed.

"I can't just use my powers at random. The police would be here in an instant, they have special magic magnitude devices."

"It won't be able to detect yours. It's too weak." She exclaimed right back.

Yuki had enough of the nonsense she was speaking. He grabbed the bag of chips and threw it into a nearby cabinet, not caring which. He grabbed her arm and dragged her out the door.

"Are you nervous?" Yuki asked to Harper.

"O-of course not!" She immediately answered.

"You're shaking." She pulled her arm out of Yuki's grasp and blushed to the side.

"What the-?!" Yuki exclaimed as he peered over the fence on the edge of the second level. A cold breeze blew through their hair as they noticed the police gather in front of the building.

"Whats going on down there?!" Harper yelled down to a bystander from the same building. He shrugged and continued looking at the police cars and policemen walking around with guns and flashlights. Some held tough looking dogs like German Shepards. they wore normal blue police outfits with a golden belt and a blue and black hat.

It was a chilly night. This was abnormal, seeing how it was the middle of the summer. Clouds covered the sky and the stars and moon were not visible. Fog settled throughout the city and the lightning rods on the skyscrapers glowed in the fog. The dim lights on their small 2-level apartment building lit up the sight of a murder scene. There were about 5 police cars and more to come, and ambulance and firefighter. Out in the distance, another gunshot was heard, followed by another, and another.

"What the-?" Yuki questioned.

"N-n-now I'm s-scared!" Harper held tightly onto the short boy's arm and shivered in the cold, and of fear.

"Let's go see whats going on, Harper."

"But its so scary! Can't I just go play my keyboard where its safe?"

"I'm afraid nowhere is safe from this point on."
