Chapter 5: A Friend?

Bob's Burger

Link and Zelda went to eat together, Bob's burgers was the obvious choice for this one.

"Thank you for this idea, I can't remember the last time I went out to eat after work. I only did it during work so and it was mainly because I would starve, not because I wanted to."

As she said that she felt something inside her telling her to shut up and not open up too much.

Link saw that something was off he didn't want to push it though.

"Well I'm glad you agreed, I was scared that you might decline thinking I was too forward."

"No, eh I mean we are partners if I need to trust you that you got my back when needed then we should at least be able to eat together."

"Yeah agreed."

"So Link tell me, how was traveling the world?"

Link chocked on his food not expecting that question. He was wondering if he should tell her the full truth or if he should lie and say what was the obvious answer. He decided to just tell her the truth. After all, he did want to grow closer to people again.

"Can I be honest with you?"

"Sure, I want you to."

"It was horrible."

"Horrible? You traveled the world Link, you saw so many things most people only dream of!"

"Yes, but why did I do it? To have fun? No, I did it to find a reason to live, after I solved the case, I was empty before I had my family, then I had this case to solve but now that, this is gone too? What do I have?"

"What do you have my ass! Link you're a genius! You're the youngest detective ever named, you help to solve cases right now. You help to make this world a better place."

"Well but for who? I got no one to do it for. No one that I care enough about that I would "avenge" them. I came back because on that tour I also saw the suicide forest in Japan. It showed me that no matter what, killing myself is not an answer. "

"Why did you go to that forest?" Zelda had fear in her voice.

"To kill me."

That's all Link said no specific tone in his voice, no pain, no fear a cold voice like he just told Zelda the sky was blue.

"I'm glad you didn't."

"Hm? Why's that?"

"The reasons I just said, you help people."

"Oh you were doing fine before me, and you know that. You didn't need me to solve this case."

"But I need you to be alive!"

"Wh-"

"I'm not going to sit here and argue with you about how I don't want you to be dead!"

"Okay."

They ate in silence, for a while.

"Tell me Link, how did it feel when you killed your family's murderer?"

"I-. I don't know. It freed me from my burden, but I felt empty. It didn't get my family back as well."

Zelda felt the tears shooting up in her eyes.

"And when you killed him did you regret it?"

"No, not when I did it. But now? I'm not sure."

Link saw the tears in Zelda's eyes.

"Zelda? Can I ask you something now?"

"Mhm."

"Did you ever think about it?"

"About what?"

"Killing Yourself."

"Yes.... All the time."

"Where do you live right now?"

"Same house I lived in before."

"I need you to come home with me tonight"

"Wha-"

"I'm the reason you're almost crying right now, I don't want you to do anything dump because of me, so you will come with me tonight I'll take care of you, just today."

"No, you really don't need to. I will be fine."

"Do you sleep underneath the smiley drawn on that wall? Do you live in an empty house with just a blanket and pillow in that one room?"

"Sometimes I forget you're some sort of Mentalist."

"I don't need to be one, I did the same thing."

"I need to see that face every day to not forget."

"Come home with me, just for one day."

"Okay."

Link and Zelda left the restaurant and drove together to Link's apartment.

"Come in you can sit on the couch while I get you what you need."

Link came after a while with a blanket and pillows.

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet."

"What? Why?"

"We need to talk about this. About you, because the state you are in now, is no good."

"I'm fine, really."

"You're not, look at you. When I last saw you, you were healthy, you ate enough, etc. You were just fine. Now you're so slim I feel like I can see through you. Your hair is always not just messy but also not looking healthy. You need to take a break! As soon as possible!"

"No. I'm just fine. Really."

"I can't force you to do this. But I want you to know that you should really take a break. And even when you don't do it, I want to help you. I want to help you get back onto your feet to be 100% again."

"Thank you Link."

"Always."

Link got up and left to go to sleep.

That word. Always stood out to her. She felt it was more than just a word. It was a promise it was his way of telling her that we would never leave her.

Or maybe she just hoped that's what it meant.

Zelda tried but wasn't able to sleep. She had too many thoughts in her head.

"He's right, I need a break. Even I realized that I get sick way faster and that something is always hurting me. The last time I ate something that wasn't at work or at a Restaurant is at least 5 months in the past. But I can't, I can't disappoint my family. I would let them down and I can't and I won't do that."

After a while, Zelda just fell asleep. Feeling safer than she did before.

She needed someone to help her out of her situation, maybe Link is the one.
