Chapter 35.

It was the last day of school, and who wasn't excited to start the summer? Besides all the kids and teachers who were over the moon, there might be two people who are just thrilled the school is coming to an end.

Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans.

After having what seemed to be a very long conversation with Nicole, Jasmine, and Brett, they have finally agreed to allow Nicole to come over for a few days over summer vacation. After a long talk with Jasmine, Brett convinced her that it would be good for Nicole to get to know her birth parents a little bit better.

Jasmine was actually becoming good friends with Scarlett since their talk. Originally Jasmine was afraid, of what would happen if Nicole wanted Scarlett as her mother instead of her, but Scarlett proved she wasn't there to steal Nicole from her. That alone was able to put her heart at peace.

They would have to wait two days, however, because Nicole was doing something with Ava after school, and then Scarlett and Chris were still working. Today, however, was Chris's day off and he was spending it with his younger brother Scott.

"I am glad you were able to make it to lunch," Scott said, "I feel like we haven't had a chance to just talk,"

"Yeah... life has been very weird lately." Chris nodded in agreement.

"You have a kid man," Scott shook his head. "No offense but I always thought you would have kids last. And now it looks like that might just be me..."

"What can I say, Scott? we have always had a competition between us." Chris couldn't help but let out a small short laugh.

"So how is fatherhood man?" Scott asked throwing a french fri into his mouth.

"It's weird. You know I don't know how to explain it." Chris said. "Are you still upset with me?"

"Me? No, I guess after thinking about it, you had your own reasons for hiding her. While I don't believe that was the right thing to do, it was your call in the end," He spoke softly. "How's her umm.."

"Parents? You can say it, Scott. They are her parents. I've accepted it." Chris explained. "But I think it's good. Scarlett and I had a conversation with them before we left for the airport. They agreed to let her come down here for the summer. Well, just a few days but it will be good for us. Maybe you can get to meet her."

"Yeah, of course, you know I am actually very excited to meet her," Scott answered. "well-properly this time,"

"Yeah well, we recently started to bond, so things have been nice. But uh I think Scarlett has a little way to go. But I think it's going fine," he couldn't help but smile himself.

"Speaking of, how are you and Scarlett exactly?" Scott asked.

"Scarlett and I? we are fine for sure, if your talking about Scarlett and how she's doing in the situation it's decent, her parents are still not speaking but she is not letting it get to her," The look on Scott's face told Chris that wasn't what he was trying to say. "I don't really know what you are trying to get at Scott," Chris said taking a bite of his burger. Scott was shaking his head and had a smirk on his face as he looks at his brother.

"Right, that's a good one," Scott said.

"I am serious Scott," Chris said, giving his brother a look that showed he wasn't kidding. Scott's face immediately fell.

"You're kidding right?" He asked as if it was a completely ridiculous concept.

"What exactly did you think would be happening?" He asked raising an eyebrow.

"Well for starters, I thought that you would start dating," He said giving Chris a knowing look. "And then maybe I thought you guys would in some weird way be sort of a family, you know?"

"No Scott I don't know," Chris admitted before letting out a sigh. "Scarlett and I will only ever be friends. She has made the quiet clear." Chris answered with a sigh.

"So you do like her?" Scott asked wiggling his eyebrows in an amusing manner. Chris sent him an annoyed look, and Scott stopped noticing that his brother now had a sad depressing look in his eyes. "What exactly did she say to you?"

"She knows that I like her. I am pretty sure that she has known for a while now." Chris shook his head in disbelief, "but when I bring it up to her she doesn't care. She wants to focus on Nicole, which I totally understand, but after we kissed I was hoping for something... more." He admitted.

"You guys kissed?" he asked.

"Before the Avengers Premier. It was in the moment, but I felt something, and according to her she didn't feel a thing." Chris could very well admit that he was falling hard for Scarlett more and more with every day. So knowing that she didn't feel the same really hurt him very much.

"I don't believe that," Scott said. "Look I have been there since the very beginning of your guy's friendship and from what I have seen what you guys have is strong. I have seen a lot of people in very committed relationships but I have never seen the sort of chemistry that is forming around you and Scarlett. I think she is trying to bury away her feelings because she is scared of ruining your guy's friendship."

"I don't see how that should be a concern. We literally have a kid together." Chris said in a low voice so no one around them could hear.

"When you found out she was having Nicole, what was her reaction," Scott asked.

"She was... she was shocked. We both agreed that we weren't ready to raise a child. She told me she wanted what was best for me and she would take care of everything." Chris said, and his words started to slow down as if he was realizing something.

"Scarlett has always been looking out for you. And maybe she is worried that if things don't work out she won't be there for you. Maybe she isn't scared of dating but losing you. She always made sure that if you weren't comfortable she would take care of it." Scott said.

"When I was reluctant about meeting Nicole, she didn't force me to stay around. If there was an awkward moment she would move the conversation along. Despite whatever I have said, she has always been there for me. Even when I didn't notice." Steve said rubbing his face. There was silence between the brothers as Chris pondered these thoughts and what they could mean. A part of Chris was brought back to life because he felt like he still had a chance to be with Scarlett, he just needed time.  "I feel like I have to talk to her and clear somethings up," Chris said, and it was a good thing they had finished their food. "Sorry bro, we can hang out more another time."

"No problem, go do your thing, get the girl and then you both can come to me and buy me lunch as a thank you," Scott said and the two of them began to leave the restaurant. "You know I can't believe that actually worked. To be honest with you I was saying random stuff and hoping that it would sound logical in the end." Chris laughed.

"Well without you blabbering I wouldn't be going after her, so I do have to thank you," Chris told his younger brother.

"As I said, I can do breakfast lunch or dinner, I'm not picky." Smirked Scott as they approached the exit. "Good luck man,"

"Thanks," Chris said and then the two parted ways. Chris began walking to his car just thinking about what he could say to Scarlett when he sees her but was interrupted by the sudden flashing of camera and questions being yelled in his face, there were so many questions being thrown at him, he didn't know what to do, and he only heard a few.

"Who is that girl?"

"Is she really your daughter?"

"How old is she?"

"Are the rumors true that you're secretly married?"

Chris could feel himself start to hyperventilate as the paparazzi tried coming close to him, almost pushing him around. In some miracle he managed to find his car in the mass crowd and drove three blocks away parking in a parking lot, seeming to have lost the paparazzi.

Chris quickly pulled out his phone and called the only person he wanted to see at the moment.
"Hello?"

"Scarlett." He sighed in relief as he heard her voice. "I uh..."

"Chris?" She asked picking up on the tone of her voice. She has been around a lot in Chris's life and she was very familiar with what was going on at the moment. "Where are you?"

"In a... an uh whole foods parking lot," His breaths were increasing and he was having trouble keeping the conversation up.

"I'm on my way, stay where you are okay? I am driving there now, I was actually on my way to shop. You know me always shopping," She tried her best to make him smile over the phone, but Chris couldn't even smile.

She stayed on the phone with him just talking to him, reminding him to breathe and just making sure he was comfortable. This went on for five minutes until she arrived by his car, they both jumped out of their cars and hugged one another.

Scarlett hugged him tight, but he held onto her as his life depended on it. Scarlett could feel him shaking and she didn't want to let go. She tried to lead him into her car just so they could talk without anyone seeing them.

Chris allowed Scarlett to lead him into the back seat of her car where he placed his head in his hands, trying to distance himself from Scarlett, he felt bad that she had driven all the way here for him.

"You want to tell me what happened?" She asked softly as she wrapped her arms around his neck pulling him so she was laying against the side door and his head was on her chest.

"I was uh..." his voice was quiet and low. "they came out of nowhere,"

"Who did?"

"The..." it faded again. "Asking questions... I don't know what they were talking about... kept pushing," Scarlett was only able to get pieces of what he was saying but she understood well enough that it had to do with the paparazzi. "I felt trapped."

"It's okay." She said running her hand through his blonde locks. "the fear is perfectly normal. The paparazzi have no boundaries, they have no respect, and it's okay for you to feel that way."

"I felt like I couldn't escape them,"

"That's understandable. Do you feel trapped now?" She asked him softly. He didn't reply but she could have sworn she felt her head move in a negative manner. "They are gone. It's just you and me Chris,"

Her words did something to him, as he slowly was regaining proper breathing again. Scarlett didn't let him go, she made sure that he would stay in her, so show him he wasn't alone. She would whisper how great he was doing and would squeeze him harder if his uneven breaths returned. Soon it became silent in the car and the air was returning to a more peaceful setting.

"I am sorry I made you come all they down here," Chris said, almost shamefully.

"Don't apologize. I promised you I would always be here for you. No matter the cost, I will not leave you." She promised.

"I felt so alone..."

"You're not alone, nor will you ever be alone." She quickly said. "I will always be here for you, I want to be here for you. Chris, you are my best friend and any time you need me all you have to do is call and I'll be there."

"What if one day you aren't there?" Chris asked.

"You can't get rid of me that easily." She smirked. "I will be there for you. Even if I am halfway around the world I will be there if you call. I promise."

"Please don't promise me something that won't always be true." He said with a sigh removing himself from her arms. Scarlett followed as he pulled away from her.

"What's going on?" She asked.

"I ... I don't know... I just I know..." Chris was having trouble with his words. Scarlett took the risk of reaching out and putting her hand onto his and when he didn't pull away she tightened her grip on him.

"you don't have to tell me,"

"I like you." He said. Scarlett just looked at him. "I know you know that... but I uh... I figured that one day you wouldn't uh be here anymore. And I would rather you leave without the uhh breaking of a promise."

"Why do you think I will leave?"

"Because you don't like me the way I like you," he answered, finally gaining his speech back. "And uh that's okay. I just don't know if I could be around you without... uh being with you for uh so long."

"Chris," She said. "I am not going anywhere. Even if one day I something happens if you are having a bad day I want to be there for you."

"But I can't be around you without being... with you anymore. It's just too much."

"Maybe I want to be with you," She said and Chris almost forgot how breath. he looked at her as if asking her 'what' without the words. "I have been lying to myself because I was scared of what would happen if it didn't work out." Chris knew he should talk to his little brother more often. "But now I just can't do that anymore. My feelings are too strong."

"You said you wanted to focus on Nicole." He reminded.

"Maybe I want to do that with you," She said softly. "I just can't ignore this anymore. It's only hurting the both of us, and the last thing I would ever want to do is hurt you Chris." the pair smiled at one another. There was now something new in the air, something unfamilar.

"What does this mean?" He asked squeezing her hand. Scarlett sent him a small smile, before leaning in and kissing him on the cheek.

"I want to take things slow. I want to make sure we are doing what is best," She told him, and he nodded in agreement. "I don't want to lose you, and we don't need to rush anything. Life will take us where we are meant to be."

"Thank you, for everything Scar. You are my best friend and I don't know where I would be without you," He told her with a very kind and gentle smile lacing his face. Natasha loved that smile so much it caused her to smile.

The pair sat wrapped in each other's arms for a few more moments. They were going over what just happened in their heads. What it meant for the future. They didn't know what it was exactly but they both knew that it would take time. They were okay with that. The car was silent Scarlett spoke up.
"I don't want to make you uncomfortable but what were the paparazzi talking about?" She asked softly. Chris's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, even he didn't know.

"I have no clue," He admitted softly to her.

"Well it's a good thing you can just look up your name and figure it out," Scarlett laughed pulling out her phone and typing Chris's name into google. Chris watched her phone as it loaded curious to know what was going on.

The pair kept their eyes glues to the phone until the page loaded and when it did they froze. Neither of them could move properly or even breath properly. They couldn't say a thing as their eyes glazed over all the news articles in disbelief.

Just when things got easy, it got a whole lot harder.
