[ 006 ] what we leave behind.
FALLEN ANGELS.
chapter six, what we leave behind.
[ season three, episode five ]
DEATH. THERE IS NOTHING more permanent than death.
Crying rings in through their ears. Odessa stares down at the baby. Her baby sister. Odessa can't take her eyes off of her.
"Let me see the baby," Hershel says. Odessa turns, walking over to Hershel and Beth. The old man gingerly takes the baby.
"What're we gonna feed it? We got anything a baby can eat?" Daryl asks, concern laces his tone.
Hershel looks up at Odessa, then his eyes glance back at Carl, who still stands rigid. "The good news is she looks healthy. But she needs formula. And soon or she won't survive."
"Won't survive?" Odessa's head snaps up. "I'm not losin' her."
She takes the baby back.
"Nope. No way. Not her. We ain't losin' nobody else. I'm goin' for a run." Daryl says.
Maggie and Glenn both step up, saying that they'll back him up. Odessa stands completely still as she looks down at her baby sister. Her baby sister.
She hears a shuffling behind her. She turns around to see her father standing up. He eland down, grabbing the the axe he dropped. "Dad!" She tries to call out but to no avail. He storms into the prison. She bites back a cry.
"Des," Carl whispers her name. She's snaps out of her own world. She forgets about everything around her. Everything falls away.
It's just her, her baby brother, and their baby sister.
Carl wraps his arms around his older sister. She holds the baby on one arm, and she cradles her brother with the other. They cry. All three of them. The baby girl cries because she's hungry. But the two oldest. . . they cry because of the pain they feel in their chests.
Odessa lost T-Dog. And their lost their mother.
Odessa didn't have the relationship she wishes she had with her mother but in the end she apologized and Odessa knows that deep down Lori loved her and that's all the closure she needed.
She just wishes she heard those words one more time from Lori Grimes. "I love you." She would do anything to hear her say that.
Eventually, Hershel and Beth are able to coerce the siblings back into the prison. Carl goes to his cell and lays down. Odessa can hear him crying as she takes the baby to her cell.
Odessa sets her down in the homemade crib she and Beth made. She rummages through one of her bag's, it's for her baby sibling. There are clothes and diapers and toys. No formula. They never got lucky enough for that. They didn't think Lori would die.
Odessa grabs a diaper and a pink onesie.
Beth walks into the cell with a washcloth and gently sits beside Odessa on the bed. "Here," she hands the wet rag to Odessa.
"Thanks," Odessa mumbles. She grabs her baby sister from the crib. She still cries. Odessa and Beth clean the baby off as best they can. When they're done, she's practically squeaky clean. Odessa places the diaper on her baby sister, then the onsie.
Odessa stands, rocking the baby in her arms. She screams and she cries and she doesn't stop.
Odessa can feel the irritation creeping up her neck. She isn't angry at her baby sister. She's angry at the world. She just lost T-Dog and her mother. And now she has to take care of the baby and Carl. She doesn't even get to mourn them.
Beth can see the irritation and exhaustion on Odessa's features. She can't miss it. She's been by Odessa's side for months. She's her girlfriend, these are things Beth picks up on before anyone else manages to.
"Can I take her?" Beth asks gently, standing up. Odessa nods, allowing Beth to take the baby. "Try to get some sleep, Odessa. We'll both be right here."
Odessa nods. She kisses Beth.
Beth watches as Odessa lays down. Their eyes stay locked.
After several minutes and a soft tune from Beth, she manages to get the baby to sleep. She gently lays her down in the homemade crib. She turns back to Odessa.
"Will you lay with me?" The Grimss girl asks.
"Of course," Beth says immediately.
Odesa scoots over as Beth lifts the cover to join her. Their legs tangle under the cover. They both lay on their sides, facing each other. For a moment, both are silent. Neither of them know what to say.
And then, Odessa's lips begin to quiver. "She's dead, Beth," she whispers. "Mom is gone now and she died thinking I hate her."
"No," Beth shakes her head. She places her right hand on Odessa's left cheek. "She knew that in the end you loved her, okay? You can't keep that weight on you, Odessa."
Odessa doesn't responsd. Beth brushes her thumb against Odessa's cheekbone.
"I love you," Beth says to her.
Both of them know that this so the first time the words have ever fallen from either of their lips to each other. But they both know for a long time that their relationship isn't one of a simple crush. It's full of love, full of a future.
Odessa doesn't hesitate to say it back to Beth, "I love you, too."

Theo and Cole sit side-by-side. The Governor arranged a party which both think is the dumbest shit ever. It's just wasting their resources.
The two women that had been brought in are named Andrea and Michonne. And Martinez informs Theo and Cole of the trouble Michonne is causing around Woodbury.
Michonne had broken into the Blake apartment and took back her sword. Then she killed the rotters his dad had out back for. . . entertainment purposes.
Theo can't not say he doesn't blame her. Woodbury is simply too good to be true. A safe place with over seventy people. With food, water, electricity, hot water, walls, security.
"I'm glad Michonne killed those biters," Cole says as he takes a sip of his beer. "Fight nights are dumb as shit."
"I agree," Theo sighs, looking out at the party in front of them. "I just wanna leave."
Cole glances over at him. "Come stay with me and Mom, Theo.@
Theo shakes his head. He looks over at Cole now. "No, Cole, I mean leave leave. As in leave Woodbury and not look back, not ever."
Cole frowns.
"It's the only way I can really get away from him," Theo says. "I don't know how else to do it. And you're right. If I stay, he's gonna kill me."
"Then leave," Cole replies. His words make Theo's brows furrow. "Don't tell anyone except me and Mom where you're going. There's a prison not far from here. It's overrun but you can pop the biters through the fence; real simple stuff. Go there, I know where it is. Found it on a scouting mission."
"Okay," Theo breathes out. "I'll go now, while everyone is distracted."
Cole nods. "Theo, be careful. There's biters and there's people. People who might be worse than your dad."
"I know," Theo tells him. "We meet once a week, at that old strip mall. You know the one I'm talkin' about?"
Of course Cole knows which strip mall Theo is talking about. That's where he and his mom had been found.
"Yeah," Cole says. "Every seven days we meet there."
"See you in seven days," Theo grins at Cole before rushing to his apartment.
When he gets there, he packs two bags full of necessary things. Clothes, food, water. In the other bag, he drops a pack of batteries in it. Along with a box of 9mm ammo for his Glock, a lighter, a flashlight, a box of matches, a water purifier, and an extra gun he stole from Merle a while back.
He attaches a holster to his belt for his Glock along with a sheath for his big hunting knife. He shoves a pocket knife in his sock as well as his front pocket.
He slings the big backpack of clothes and other things over his shoulder and across his back. Then he hoists the other one with a single strap over his shoulder.
As he's about to open the front door, he stops. He turns around and storms to his father's room. He grabs the pictures of their family. In the picture, is him and his father, and Penny and Mom.
He shoves it into his bag. He'll burn out his father's face later.
He leaves his father's room. As he does, he looks towards the room that was once Penny's. His baby sister. Now, all it holds are distant memories of her, his father's walker heads, and the remained corpse of Penny.
He whispers, "I'm sorry, Pen."
Then he leaves.
He leaves his apartment. He leaves Woodbury. He leaves his father and Penny.
And he doesn't look back.
He doesn't dare look back.

sadness.
theo supremacy. I LOVE HIM. the development he gets is so good, lemme tell y'all that. and then the cole development? godly. y'all are really gonna love them.
no because y'all got FEED this chapter with that beth and odessa scene. i need to write them more and include their romance more. as y'all can tell i don't revolve my fanfics around the romance. i revolve it around the characters.
are y'all ready for the war with woodbury and the governor plot line because it's coming up. very soon actually. like two or three chapters soon.
it's going to be devastating but the time jump between season three and four brings so much peace to the group and it's the happiest odessa has been since before the apocalypse.
