Chapter 5 | emotions
You woke up on what felt like a bed of feathers, L did not go halfway with the hotels. The hotel he had picked was 5 star, and it showed. Your room was amazing, huge, and had a great view. You slowly opened your eyes and heard the quiet music from your headphones you left in that night. You pulled them out and sat up on the king sized bed. You rubbed your eyes and stretched out your arms, there was a small ray of sunlight coming from behind the curtains that had managed to hit you right in the face. You blocked the shining light with your hand and tuned away. You pulled back the blankets and threw you feet over the side of the bed. Your feet hit the cold ground and you stood up, walked over to the door and pulled it open. The first thing you saw was papers, papers scattered all over the floor leading into the main part of the room. There were candy wrappers and empty coffee cups lying around too. You carefully made your way through the maze of files and into the kitchen, you grabbed a cup and started to brew some tea.
From across the room you could see the sparking wings of L, he was half asleep staring at some papers in his hand.
"Well good morning brainiac" you said.
He jumped and turned to look at you.
"Good morning (y/n), did you sleep well" he asked.
"More or less, the bed was comfortable but I couldn't fall asleep until about midnight" you said taking a sip of your tea.
"Still have that sleeping issue?"
"Yep, I'm guessing from the state the room is in you still have insomnia"
"Yeah, but who needs sleep when justice has to be served" he said.
You poured a cup of coffee for him and put in his usual amount of sugar. Avoiding the papers and candy packets on the floor, you gave him the cup and sat beside him.
"Well, if you don't sleep at lest a bit, you won't have the brain power to think straight, resulting in sloppy deductions and an unsolved case" you said tapping his head.
"True" he replied taking a sip of his coffee "but this case needs all the effort it can get."
"Yes but your health is more important"
He froze. You tilted your head in confusion at his sudden action, he looked over at you and smiled just the slightest. He put his hand on top of yours and started at you.
"You really care about my well being huh?"
"Why wouldn't I?" You said blushing at his actions.
"It's been a while since someone showed they cared for me... thank you"
You smiled at him, but within seconds, he turned back to his coffee and changed the topic.
"Tomorrow, the taskforce will be coming in. I've assembled some local detectives to help out on the case, and I have 12 FBI agents flying over to investigate them, information had been leaked and I have to make sure the source of the leak is stopped" he explained.
"Good idea, this leak should be stopped asap, unless..."
"Unless what?"
"The leak is digital... check all the computers, they could be bugged" you said.
"Good thinking! How did I miss that?" L said smacking his head.
You giggled at him as he began typing away at his computer.
"Oh, (y/n)?" He said, not a change of tone in his voice.
"Yeah?"
"When I called you at the orphanage, what were you singing?"
You froze. You couldn't exactly say it was about him now could you?
"Something I wrote..." you said slightly embarrassed.
"Can I listen?"
"Um... ok..." you said, getting up to get your laptop.
You dashed into the hall and grabbed your laptop, pulling out the charger and walking back to L.
He didn't look away from his screen as you pressed play on the Mp3 file.
As the song began, you tuned away and hid the blush on your face. Around midway through the song, you heard him stop typing, you felt is gaze on you for the rest of the song.
There was an awkward silence as the song drew to and end. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. You looked at him through your side vision. He had a sudden look of realisation on his face, like someone whacked him in the face with a bat of realisation. He was staring at you, he had a hand over his mouth in shock. You came to conclusion that you broke him.
And that he'd figured it out.
Suddenly, completely out of the blue, he wrapped his arms around you and didn't let go as he buried his face into your arm. What did you do to L? That was all you could think at that moment.
"I'm such an idiot..." he mumbled.
"Uhh..." was all that left your mouth.
"The day I left... when you were crying... was it-" he paused and tightened his grip on you.
"Because of me leaving? Please be honest"
You had definitely broken L, he'd never done something like this... ever.
"Y-yes..." you replied, completely out of fear of what he might do if you didn't tell the truth. This was a side of L you'd never seen, who knows what he's capable of?
"I'm sorry... I didn't realise I meant that much to you" he said, a slight crack in his voice.
Was he crying? So many thoughts went through you head. All you knew was you must've broken his shell right away. He's never opened up like this.
Sure enough, you felt warm tears soak though your shirt. Wow, so much crying had happened in the past few days... you felt his body shake against yours and you could hear his quiet sobs. All you could do was wrap your arms around him and not let go.
At that moment, you heard the door open and Watari come in. You turned your head to face him, he had a look of shock of his face.
"Is L crying?" He whispered.
You nodded, shock was all that came from his expression as he walked into the kitchen.
"L..." you said.
No response.
You put a hand on his shoulder and the other under his chin, making him pick up his head. His eyes were red and puffy from the tears that streamed down his face.
"That song was about me, wasn't it?" He said in a small voice.
"Yes, please don't be mad..." you said.
He took a deep breath and looked you dead in the eye, your fearful eyes.
"I'm not... just... shocked. You really cared that much about me?" He said wiping his tears with his sleeve.
"Lawliet..."
You only ever used his name in serious situations. This way, there was no way L could overlook it.
"I've always cared..."
