Chapter 6: Impromptu babysitting

Sorry for the long wait, but the paperwork for getting into university and then getting a dorm at said university is much more complicated than I thought. Still, I bring you a chapter full of fluff and no angst for once. Enjoy! Also quick reminder that this book is not beta read, so if you see any typos or mistakes, it's because of that.

2nd POV

Today started like any other morning in your formed routine. You woke up, your wound no longer acting up as you easily slipped out of the bed. You waddled over to the closet, pulling out some comfy clothes you were oh so graciously given by Gaster to not be stuck in only one outfit considering what you were wearing when you fell in was ruined beyond fixing by your own blood.

You could already hear a tiny commotion downstairs, your eyebrow raising in confusion when you heard the door be slammed shut. Did Gaster leave already? He is yet to check on your wound. It may not be acting up anymore, but he was insistent on it being looked over regularly to make sure it doesn't suddenly get worse. Perhaps something important has caught his full attention?

The confusion and slight concern was alleviated once you heard the loud voice of the usual person that came to take care of Papyrus and Sans while Gaster was gone. Since they're here, he must have simply been summoned to work early or something along these lines.

With that thought, you let out your wings, curling and then opening them a few times. The pain in the right wing was now fully gone, but it still felt a bit sore, so you were going to keep this up until you were sure it was back to its full mobility. You also went to the bathroom to wash your teeth and quickly brush your hair.

The previous confusion arose again when you heard the door slam shut again, the loud voice now gone and leaving the house in complete silence. Did they leave so early? But they've only just showed up and, if they're gone, it means Papyrus and Sans are all alone.

You let your wings melt against your back and then opened the door to your room, walking out and going downstairs. Technically, you were not supposed to be leaving it unless you were going to the bathroom, but this was a unique situation and you were not going to let the kids be all alone for who knows how many hours. The first thing you saw once you jogged down the stairs, was a big couch, along with quite a few bookshelves, a carpet and a rack for coats that, right now, held only a tiny blue and orange ones.

Sans' head peeked over the backrest when he heard your footsteps, soon followed by Papyrus' tinier one.

"What are you two doing alone?" You asked, going around the couch and sitting down on the opposite end of it.

Sans shrugged, going back to watching his brother play with a Rubik's Cube. Said cube was a typical 3 x 3 one with different colours on each side, currently all jumbled up for Papyrus to try and solve.

"dad said there was an emergency at the lab and left early. then uncle was supposed to babysit us as usual, but he suddenly remembered something and ran out of the house too" Was the explanation you got from the older of the two skeletons.

You frowned at that. "And have you eaten anything?"

The kids shook their heads.

"dad was going to make something before he went to work, then uncle said he'll make something instead since dad's busy. both ended up leaving before they had the chance to cook something" You groaned quietly at his explanation, tapping your fingers against your arm in thought.

"Alright then, where's the kitchen?" Sans lazily pointed towards an archway where said room was, his eyes not leaving Papyrus, who was now proudly presenting him a cross pattern he made on the Rubik's Cube.

You left the two be, walking into the kitchen instead and looking through all the cupboards to see the ingredients they have and what you could make from them. A grin spread on your face once you noticed everything needed to make one of your favourite dishes.

"What would you say about having (f/f)?" The brothers perked up at the idea, Papyrus jumping to his feet and waddling over to the kitchen, Sans soon following.

"THAT SOUNDS LOVELY! CAN I HELP?" He looked up at you with his puppy dog eyes and you couldn't help but nod with a chuckle.

"Yeah kid, you can help if you'd like" He yelled out a very satisfied 'YAY' at your words, raising his arms for you to pick him up, which you did.

"I can use the kitchen, right?" You glanced over at Sans, who gave you a nod and then just teleported himself on top of the counter to watch. You blinked, shocked. Just how many very complicated spells only the strongest monsters could use does he know?

Even with his permanent smile he somehow grins wider at your bewildered stare. He leaned back against the wall with a shrug and then motioned for you to start cooking since Papyrus was already starting to squirm in your arms.

Pushing back the shock but making a mental note of that ability, you began to get everything ready for the dish, your little helper happily following your lead.

In no time you had the thing done and served, considering it was one of the few dishes you had mastered. Even with food being a luxury to indulge in for angels and not a necessity, you loved the flavour of this one enough to learn it by heart.

You put down three plates, serving the (f/f) for the two to try. You plop Papyrus down in a chair, Sans teleporting to the other one, before taking a seat yourself.

"Dig in" You started eating first, relishing how the flavours melted on your tongue and mixed together. This is one of your better ones, for which you mentally pat yourself on the back.

Seeing you enjoying your food, the two brothers dug in too. Their eye lights 'lit up', for the lack of better word, their grins growing bigger as they wolfed down breakfast.

You smiled in accomplishment at that, taking your time with your plate. After breakfast you collected up the dirty platters, but before you could do anything blue magic took them out of your grasp. You turned your head to Sans, who gave you a tiny nod and floated the dishes to the sink, turning the water on and washing them himself. Well, with his magic, but close enough.

"Thank you Sans" In the meanwhile you packed the leftovers up so they could be saved for dinner too.

All three of you went back to the living room afterwards and sat down on the couch, full from breakfast.

"So what do you usually do when your uncle is babysitting?"

Papyrus grinned at the question, jumping up to stand on the couch and wave his tiny hands around while he spoke.

"A LOT OF THINGS! UNCLE IS GREAT! AND SUPER STRONG! AND HAS COOL STORIES! WE GO OUT TO MAKE SNOWMEN SOMETIMES! CAN WE GO? PLEASEEEE!" He gave you his best puppy dog eyes, looking up at you with sparkling eye lights.

It was very hard to say no to that face, but you didn't want a repeat of your first meeting with Gaster if he comes back and gets the wrong idea, again. You'd rather keep your insides where they're supposed to be, inside you and not left on a branch stub.

Sans, luckily, seemed to realise it's a bad idea too as he shook his head.

"I don't think we should do that bro. dad said we can't go out unless we're with someone he trusts"

Papyrus frowned.

"BUT THE HUMAN IS VERY NICE! AND DAD LETS HER STAY HERE, SO SHE CAN'T BE THAT BAD, RIGHT?"

You glanced away. Ah yes, 'human'. That's you... just a very normal human, nothing else.

"how about you show her your favourite toys?" Sans' suggestion made Papyrus forget all about the idea of going outside.

"YES! THAT'S GREAT IDEA SANS! I SHALL BE BACK IN A MOMENT!" He ran off and up the stairs, disappearing from your view, though you did hear him trip a few times from his haste.

You glanced back at Sans, who simply shrugged and motioned for you to wait. Which you did. It didn't take long for the sound of tiny feet to come back as Papyrus ran down the stairs, a bunch of toys and other things in his hands. Most notably, a big box of puzzles with a beautiful image on the front of what seemed to be a waterfall surrounded by black rocks and glowing flowers.

He put everything down on the carpet and you looked over the big selection of toys. Other than the box of puzzles you could see a children's book with a cute bunny monster on the front, a lot of crayons, blank paper to draw on, a few different types of Rubik's Cubes and, of course, a lot of different toys.

Papyrus looked between you and Sans with the biggest puppy eyes he has given anyone yet, sitting down on the carpet and all but bouncing on it in excitement. You gave him a fond smile and knelt down on it, motioning towards all the things he'd brought.

You couldn't say no to that face.

"What do you want to start with?" Papyrus' grin somehow got wider and he proudly presented the first toy of many.

***

That was how most of your day had passed. Filled with laughter and two tiny kids with big imagination.

You had played with the toys, reenacting an entire story Papyrus had come up with, solved the cubes, which, honestly, was mostly just the younger of the two skeletons doing. He seems to have a big knack for puzzles and things of sort. A fact which he gladly shared with you in detail.

The most memorable moment out of the entire day though, was when all three of you decided to draw something using the crayons that were brought down.

Sans, for reasons unknown to you, decided to draw a bottle of ketchup. You weren't going to question him, even if that did confuse you. Kids have imaginations and you guess his just so happened to settle on depicting a surprisingly well detailed ketchup bottle.

You didn't make anything remarkable. Drew whatever first came to your mind, not really paying much attention to what it exactly was. You were more excited to see what the duo came up with after all than with your own creation.

Papyrus... his drawing surprised you.

He drew himself, holding hands with his father and brother. That alone wasn't really surprising. Of course he'd make a depiction of the people he loves. No, what surprised you, was the fourth figure joining the three other. (H/l) (h/c) hair drawn in a childish scrawl, a little messy, but still recognisable. (E/c) dots serving as eyes and a bright smile besides the other three smiling figures. It was you, of course, holding Sans' hand.

Underneath it, in bold red letters 'MY FAMWILY' was written.

It froze you for a moment, your eyes darting between the drawing you and the writing underneath. Papyrus in the meanwhile stared at you with a big grin and hopeful look, waiting for your judgement of his art skills.

You gently put the drawing to the side, then walked over to the two kids to kneel in front of them. Without saying anything, you spread your arms out and pulled them into a giant hug, trying and failing not to tear up. Papyrus of course reacted immediately and gladly hugged you back, his tiny hands wrapping around your neck and squeezing you. Sans on the other hand needed a moment, processing what was happening for a few seconds. Then, after a brief hesitation, he hugged you back too.

You've been here for a month, barely a month, so never in your wildest dreams you would have thought that Papyrus would see you as a part of the family. Yet here you were, the proof undeniable.

You pulled back after a moment and gave them the brightest smile they've seen from you yet, ruffling their heads in the meanwhile. You stopped and blinked though, when they fuzzed up, tiny hairs standing up from your petting.

Sans, noticing your puzzled expression decided to spare you having to try to figure it out yourself and jumped in to explain.

"dad says we have tiny hairs that can react to electricity and stand up if conducting it or something" It was the best explanation you could get out of a kid, so you took what you got.

You ruffled their heads just a bit more since it was one of the most adorable things you've seen in your entire life and post-life, then went straight back into playing, since the puzzle was yet to be finished.

Which was exactly what the three of you did. With this many hands helping in no time you had the image proudly sitting on the floor in all its glory. All except for one missing piece. Said piece is what you spent the next hour or so searching for, before finding it under one of the kitchen cabinets, somehow. Still, with the last puzzle now where it should be, the waterfall was finished.

You went to eat leftovers after it, making sure to save some for Gaster once he's back from work.

Then, while you washed the plates from dinner and made sure that the living room didn't have any scattered toys lying around, the kids went to get ready for bed. You finished cleaning just in time to see them come back down, wearing adorable little pyjamas.

Papyrus held up the same book he brought to you before, the one with a bunny on the front.

"DAD USUALLY READS US A BEDTIME STORY, BUT HE'S NOT HOME YET! CAN YOU DO THAT INSTEAD? PLEASE?" He looked up at you, the same puppy eyes present, though they are not needed for you to say yes.

He squealed happily and ran back upstairs, dragging his brother behind him while you followed after at a more leisurely pace. You walked into their shared room, finding both already snuggled up under a blanket on the bed.

With a quiet chuckle you sat down on the edge of it to read, but Papyrus grabbed your hand and tugged at you to join them. Deciding it wouldn't hurt, you got under the covers with the two, who, surprisingly snuggled up to your sides. You petted their heads and then opened the book, beginning to read it.

By the time you got to the end of it, both little skeletons were already off in the dreamland, quiet snores filling the room once you grew silent. You smiled softly at them and then tried to wiggle your way out of their hold to go to sleep in your own room, but were unsuccessful once Papyrus' grip on you tightened.

You yawned and after a brief moment of contemplation, laid back down, bringing the two closer to you and letting yourself close your eyes.

With adorable kids right beside you and a soft smile, you fell asleep.

"How can I save-"

Some of you may recognise the fuzzing. Yes it is very much inspired by Zarla's universe and the skeletons being able to be fuzzed up in there. I thought it's adorable and decided to add it in.
