Chapter 9- After You Think of Me
(Christine's POV)
It was finally after the performance. After the curtain call, I went through the backstage, only to be greeted with a flock of men in front of my new dressing room. Each of them was holding a bouquet and they must have been waiting for me. I quickly hid behind the corner and ran to the chapel. I knew my angel would see all the people in front of my dressing room, so he would want me to come to the chapel, since our meetings were a secret.
When I arrived at the silent little room, I saw little Diane sitting in the window and playing with something in her hands. As she turned to face me, I noticed she was holding a deep red rose with a silky black ribbon. A lovely smile was on her face as she ran to me and hugged the giant skirt that flowed around me.
"Christine, you were amazing! Absolutely amazing!" She then handed the rose to me along with a note that she pulled out of her pocket. "I know I should not have touched it, but I swear, I didn't do anything to either of them."
"Diane, don't apologize, darling. I know that if I were the same age as you were and in this same situation, I would do the exact same thing. Didn't you prick yourself at the rose thorns?' I asked her, because I knew that she could be somewhat of a clumsy girl, just as me.
"No, I didn't, for the rose doesn't have any thorns." She looked up at me and I quickly looked at the stem of the fresh-looking flower. The stem of it was indeed without thorns, but where those should have been were little oval-shaped lighter green marks. My angel must have plucked them off. He is so sweet and nice to me.
"Who left it here for you, Christine? Is it that teacher who comes here to teach you how to sing and is giving you compliment after compliment?" blurted out Diane, but as soon as she finished her little hands found their way towards her mouth.
"You were spying on me Diane? Why did you do that? And why were you awake at that time of the night in the first place?" I asked her as I took a strand of her hair that was hanging over her forehead and fastened it back into the bow at the back of her hair.
"I just noticed that you were going away from our dorm room every night at the exact same time and I was just curious were you went. I also felt quite alone without you. So, after watching you go away every night for about a month, I followed you and I did hear you and your tutor talking and singing. And I have followed you to the chapel ever since. So, tell me, is he really your tutor or perhaps someone else?" she threw at me sentence after sentence and finished it off with a question that I didn't know if I should answer.
"Do you remember that about three months ago, in this exact chapel, I told you a story?" I started off as I motioned for her to sit down onto the floor. I did so too, the giant skirt creating a sea of white silk, lace and gold jewels around me.
"Yes. You told me the story of Little Lotte and her Angel of Music. What does that have to do with your tutor?" She asked me as she cuddled herself into the fabric of my skirt. I took in a big breath.
"Well, my tutor is actually the Angel of Music." I blurted out. Little Diane looked at me with big confused eyes for a while, but then smiled and nodded her head, signaling for me to go on. "He is actually here with me every night and gives me voice lessons. And when we aren't singing, we just talk. But I think it is quite late and you must go to sleep, young lady, and not follow me everywhere like you are my tail."
I took Diane back to the dormitory and helped her out of her ballet costume. "Christine? Could you please ask the angel a little favor for me?" asked Diane with a slight pouting mouth as I was trying to get her nightgown over her head. "And what would it be, my little princess?" I asked as she turned around and let be lace the top of her nightclothes up.
"Could you ask the angel to come and sing me a lullaby sometimes?" I smiled and gently stroked her red hair. "I will ask him to come and sing you to sleep. And that is a promise." I smiled and I lifted her up onto her bed. After she had a blanket over her, I gently kissed her on the forehead and went to my own room to get off my costume (which I realized I was still wearing) and to see if Angel wasn't waiting for me there.
When I arrived at the pink-walled room, I slowly got out of my costume, leaving the skirt in one heap on the ground and tossing my corset somewhere into a corner. As I looked at the vanity table I had in the room, I noticed a letter lined with black sitting in between my open face powder and perfume bottles. I knew it was a message from my Angel, so I sat down to read it.
"Promises should never be broken. I will sing for your little friend tonight. Wait for me in the dressing room. Your Angel" Although the note said only a few simple sentences, I was happy and put the note gently into by drawer, where I stored all the letters I got from him. I think I will have to find a new place where to store the letters, because my drawer was almost full.
After a few minutes, I finally felt my Angel's presence in the room. He whispered my name and a smile was immediately spread across my face. We started to talk about my performance from a few hours ago and my angel constantly praised me.
"Christine, do you remember that one night when you wanted to see me?" he asked carefully and a memory from one of our previous lessons came back to me.
////Flashback/////
We just finished with our lesson for the day and I sat down onto the ground, cuddled up in the teal cape Angel gifted me after our first lesson. We were talking about random things that came to our minds. I then asked him:
"What do you look like Angel? Are you going to appear to me someday like that night I first heard you?" He answered me after a moment of silence:
"That should not bother your mind, my dear Christine."
"But, please, could you promise me that you will one day appear to me?" I begged him.
"You know I would promise you anything, my dear Christine..."
////End of flashback////
"Yes, I do, Angel." I slowly stood up and smoother out my robe, which I have put on while my angel was singing Diane to sleep.
"Well, I am now able to fulfill this promise I gave you." I wrapped my arms around me and looked around the dressing room.
"Where are you, Angel?" I asked into the air, which got a bit chillier all of a sudden.
"Look at your reflection in the mirror." he softly commanded. I did turn to look at the mirror and he was indeed there, looking at me with strange but kind honey eyes and reaching out for me.
