Chapter 4- Once upon that other time

(Christine's POV)

"There was once a little girl. A very small and young girl. Just like you." I poked softly into my little friend's, Diane's, nose and she giggled lightly.

"Her name was Lotte. She had long curly blonde hair and light blue eyes."
"How light Christine?" Diane asked me "as light as snow or like the water in the sea?"

"Let me think." I told her, putting my chin in between my thumb and pointer finger. "I heard this story many times, but I cannot remember the exact shade of Little Lotte's eyes. I believe my father described her eyes as two sapphires frozen in the cleanest lakes of the mountains." I sighed. "It was so long ago I heard it from my papa. What shade of blue do you like the most?" I asked Diane, trying to come up with an easy solution for her little childish mind.

"I love the shade of blue that baby blankets have. The shade that the ribbons on our costumes are and the shade that the dress that you showed me last Saturday in town was." She smiled and I remembered the last time we two made a little trip into the town.

"Well, just imagine her eyes were that particular color. She had the loveliest voice of all. Almost a voice of an angel." "Just like yours, Christine!" She smiled and rolled onto her back.

"Oh Diane!" I spoke to her as I put her into a sitting position once again. "My voice is nowhere near a voice of an angel!"

I giggled at the little 11 year old before me. Saying that I have the qualities of an immortal being while I am only an orphan who works as a chorus girl.

"As the story goes, she lived on a coast in a small cottage with a kitten, who kept her company. She would often go to the meadow in the morning, pick colorful flowers and sing beautifully. But one day, a storm came and Lotte was very scared of thunder. So, she started praying to the heavens to protect her and send her an angel who will sing songs in her head to distract her from the ongoing storm."

"And did the heavens send Lotte an angel, big sister Christine?" It was adorable that she sometimes called me her big sister. And I knew how she could feel if she didn't have me with her. I alone experienced that feeling when I first came here. I was six years old back then and Madame Valerius, the ballet instructor here, brought me here after my father's death. She took care of me and I became a ballet girl here. When I was eight, I and Madame Valerius found a small bundle in front of the Opera House. What we found was a little baby girl who someone wanted to get rid of. Madame Valerius (with the tiny help from me) raised the girl. And as anybody could guess, that baby was my friend Diane.

"Of course, my dear! The angel really did come to protect her and he sang her to sleep from that day on. He also taught her how to sing and she became a famous opera singer when she grew up."

"What happened to the angel of music when Lotte grew up?" Diane asked me curiously, getting herself comfortable on my skirt. Her tiny sharp elbows were digging into my legs underneath the skirt, but I didn't mind.

"After the last performance of Lotte at the opera the angel visited her and took her with him into heaven. Lotte became an angel herself. She was gifted with a pair of big white wings made of feathers and she lived happily with her angel forever."

As I returned back from my land of stories, I saw that Diane fell asleep and had a small smile on her face.

"And that is the end of the story."
