II
i sat in my algebra class, yawning because of my fatigue.
"okay class, please get out last night's homework."
my eyes tiredly widen, shit, i forgot. as she passes by my friends desks, i fumble with my fingers. she stops in front of mine.
"miss boran,"
her voice fake, she places her hand on my desk.
"where is your homework?"
"i forgot to do it."
my voice was steady, i don't bother looking at her, she's always hated me. she makes a shaming sound.
"you know if you keep this up, you may never have a future. no college degree, no passing finals, or average sat scores."
i crack my knuckles as she sighs, pitying me. her heels click against the floor.
"it's just one time,"
i mumble under my breath, her heels momentarily stop. still looking at my desk, not an ounce of fear or dilemma in my body. one simple mistake.
"what did you just say?"
she sounds surprised by my actions, i sit up, finally looking at her in the eye. bravery in my heart.
"it was one. time. i never forget things, ask anyone in this class. it wasn't necessary to say what you had said, so don't bash me on my future over one homework assignment."
i could hear a low "oo" falling around my rooms atmosphere. miss canagan has an annoyed, and angry expression.
"how dare you talk back to me, where are your manners?"
her voice is disgusted, i scoff.
"you asked me a question, and all i did was answer. i have manners, you just don't seem to understand them."
she huffs and walks back to her desk, scribbling down something. probably a referral. she walks back to my desk, slamming the piece of paper down in front of me. i don't flinch nor do i have any negative feeling inside me. i lean over, observing the note.
leah boran
disrespecting me, and talking back in foul language.
miss canagan
i laugh loudly, as the class watches me in awe, she doesn't look amused.
"get out of my class."
i stand up from my chair.
"i did nothing wrong."
i clench my jaw, she raises her eyebrows.
"i told you, leave."
a feeling inside me began bubbling, not negative, but pure.
"make me."
i sit back down, saying it ever so kindly, her mouth drops open. she begins calling the office as i feel someone tap my shoulder.
"you're the first person whose ever stood up to canagan, you've got some balls, boran. i must say,"
he offers a fist bump, i smile, fist bumping him. turning back around, there were two security guards in front of me. not an ounce of amusement on their faces, miss canagan stands next to them smirking.
"escort her out boys."
they grab me by the arms, and hoist me up in a sudden movement. i widen my eyes, what the-
"i did nothing wrong."
miss canagan doesn't seem to care about what i had to say, as i get dragged out, i push against their strength. stop this bullshit. i feel my eyes burn, and for once, it wasn't because i was crying. i look at the man on my right.
"let me go."
my voice quiet, he glances at me, in his pupils i see a white cloud form. he lets go of me in an instant.
"johnny, what are you-"
"i did no wrong, leave."
i feel my eyes flash something, i have no idea what, but the same process proceeded. they stood like statues, at my order, in the empty hallways of brookestone.
"if anyone asks where i went, tell them my father picked me up early due to bad behavior."
they nod in unison, i smile, making my way out of this god forsaken place. what's happening to me?
shawn's pov
i walked around the empty netherworld, seeing dead everywhere. dead plants, dead trees, fire burning animals, dead people especially. they all greeted me happily.
"hello, shawn."
"isn't that the devil?"
"wow, you're even more good looking in person."
i chuckle at the teenage demons comment, she whisks her black hair back. her skin tan and smooth.
"i'm avaline, but you can call me ava."
her voice is polite and mature, i smile, she's very pretty.
"are you a demon? or a succubus?"
she shakes her head, sprouting her black wings. they were, of course, different from mine. every angels wings were, but they were still black.
"fallen angel, i see. what did you get sent down here for?"
we began walking along the path of fire, the heat not bothering anyone. it was almost comforting, she stuffs her hands in her dark skinny jeans.
"i didn't fulfill my duty as a healer, and healed another angel that was dying."
she sighed, not in regret, but in anger.
"he deserved it, no one knew what he was doing behind locked gates. he killed many mortals before, out of his own pleasure. i had to sit by and watch."
she shakes her head, turning away from me, i see that black tears were running down her face. i hold her hand.
"hey, i'm sorry about that. believe me, it's not your fault."
"but it is, shawn. he killed children, children. i could have said something beforehand, and those parents wouldn't have lost their child. their own precious angel."
her voice cracks, she has one large heart, i could still sense her purity. she was just in the darkness, depression as an immortal. not a wicked like me. i hold her in my arms.
"he chose those decisions, even if you had said something, he would have gotten angry and killed even more."
she sniffles against me, i let go of her hand, as she darkens up again.
"yeah, maybe. thank you."
she smiles softly, i nod.
"it was really nice meeting you."
she begins walking away, until i felt the ground begin to shake. my eyes widen, flaring out my wings, i jump up into the air. keeping myself up, as did other fallen angels, including ava. i see a crack open in the sky, a brightness shining down.
"we are giving you one last chance, finish this quest, and all will be lifted."
i hear that familiar voice say, i roll my eyes.
"what is it?"
in curiosity, i see an image of a girl appearing in the bright clouds. i stop breathing, my... she's beautiful. her straight, brunette hair had gone down to her chest. her lips plump and structured, her cheeks a bit puffed.
"find this girl, and bring her to me."
what business does he have with a beautiful mortal like her?
"where? and why?"
"she is on earth, but you will know the reason why once you receive her."
the offer sounded skeptical, i hesitate for a few minutes, until i felt my body being spun. wait, hold up- i feel myself shoot up through the bright clouds, and forced back down to some ground. i groan in pain, feeling dizzy, as i recover from the hard fall. i look around at my surroundings green trees, green grass, and the atmosphere had changed. the ground wasn't red or made up of clouds anymore, it was alive and solid.
i hear distant sounds of children laughing, and cars roaring to life...
you've got to be kidding me.
