Chapter Eighteen

It's been three weeks since Lyla initiated the kiss at the bowling alley, and since then, the two have gotten noticeably closer.

It was a little past midnight when Austin sent her a text asking if she was up, and they spent the next thirty minutes texting. Until Lyla asked if it was okay if he could come over so late in the night.

It was currently 4:30 in the morning as Austin and Lyla sat on her back porch, laughing and chatting about whatever came to mind.

"Okay, if you had to eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?"

Lyla hummed thoughtfully for a moment, "I suppose it would be fish."

"Fish?" Austin made a disgusted face, "I was gonna say mac and cheese. Why fish?"

"Well if you think about it, you don't have to specify a fish. So I could have different fish everyday." The brunette explained as she shifted in her seat.

The young man stood up and led her his hand, "I always loved looking at the stars, wanna join?"

She smiled and nodded in response as they walked hand in hand to the grass, laying her blanket down as a cover. They talked about anything and everything, pausing for a moment to yawn as they huddled close together.

"Are you scared?"

"Of what?" She asked.

"Of what your life will be like after high school."

She pursed her lips before opening her mouth, "It scares me from time to time, but then I remember that I have a plan. A plan that I would like to stick by. Are you?"

The freckled boy nodded, "Terrified. The thing is, I can't talk to any of my friends about it, cause it's weird when a guy gets scared about his future. But it's senior year, a year full of lasts. I'm just..." Austin sighed, "not ready to let that go."

Lyla sat up and he followed suit, "No one is truly ever ready to let go, it's just a part of life." Her eyes darted down to his lips, sob-consciously licking hers, "You just have to find the will to let go."

The pair were noticeably closer as his lips brushed against hers, he pulled away as she looked up at him with her green eyes. Only for him to be pulled back in again by the way she looked at him, and they felt content.

Not even a little bit scared.

Just confident.

"Okay, you two! Get up!" Daniel huffed as he threw a glass of water onto Austin's head.

"Dad!" Lyla shrieked as he coughed up the water.

"Be glad it wasn't boiling." The man muttered under his breath as he walked back into the house where his wife scolded him.

The young girl apologized to the boy where he calmed her down and let her know it was okay. Her hair dropped over her shoulder as she helped him up, smiling and laughing at each other.

"Your hair looks a mess."

"At least I didn't wake up in my own drool." She rolled her green eyes, shoving his shoulder teasingly.

Austin feigned hurt, his expression cracking as he grinned a toothy smile. He picked up the blanket and handed it to her as they walked out the backyard, "So I was wondering, would you like to go out with me again sometime?"

"Only if you don't panic and try to rush me home an hour early."

"Deal."

"Then yes, I would love to go out with you again."
