18. Drowning
~~~ Nu'est W - Deja vu ~~~
Jun's pov
He felt like a thief.
He, someone whose reputation was built on being known as the nicest, the most honest guy on school. He snickered for himself, letting his fingers work faster than before.
If someone told him, he will be going through someone else's documents, without them knowing or getting any permission whatsoever, he would probably laugh at the ridiculous image. But then, why was it exactly what he was doing right now?
He even made sure, he will come here, when there was no way, he could get discovered. The guilt stroke him right in the heart, but he shook it off almost instantly, simply because he had a perfect excuse for his abnormal behaviour.
Jihye.
He let her go, without telling him any details of what is up with the calls. He let her be, because he knew she was having a hard time herself and then it was pointless to try and ask her question. Plus since that night, she did all she could to distance herself from him. He was not having it. He only got her to come to him and he is not letting go of her. Giving up, was not in his dictionary.
He let go of her once, he is not doing it again.
And that all was the reason, he was now crouching down on the floor behind mister Oh's office desk, while looking through his stuff.
He was playing detective by himself, trying to find the list of outgoing and incoming calls from the landline company, Oh's were using. He was doubting he will manage to find it, easier was to call to the company, but her was saving it for later, in case he really can't find anything.
He was hoping to find the number of the person, who kept on bothering her.
In the end he didn't find the receipts, but he found the phone number to get through to the phone company and decided to call them, pretending to be Mister Oh. He realised he was going overboard, but the look in Jihye's face when that person called, was enough oil to be add to the fire inside of him, forcing him go to this extend to get the answer to his questions.
He left mister Oh's office, going back to his house to proceed with the rest of his plan.
He was being frank, as he called, wanting to know who the caller is, he remembered the exact time and date, so it wasn't really hard to find out the number of the caller. Thankfully the phone company employee didn't question him too much and gave him exactly what he wanted. He found out from him that the number was calling to the Oh's landline often, just like Jun already knew. There was no set time the person called, it was almost random, but the calls never lasted more than few seconds.
Now he was sitting in his room, staring at the number.
He was hesitating to call it. He thought about what he is going to say.
It rang, forever with no answer. Funny enough, it didn't even get to the voicemail mechanism. It just kept on ringing. He was trying it for almost half an hour, until he heard the click, as someone picked it up.
"Hello?" someone spoke up.
"Who is it?" he asked, calming his fast beating heart.
"You called, who are you?" the voice sounded like it belonged to a child. Jun frowned.
"Where are you parents?" he tried to use authoritative voice to make the kid listen to him, but the voice giggled.
"Are you my daddy?" the person asked, while Jun almost choked, being surprised by this kind of response.
"N... no!" he let out with strangled voice. Maybe it really is a naughty child, making prank calls...
"You don't sound very sure," the voice slipped to the lower tone, no longer sounding like a child. This must be the most curious phone call he has ever done, Jun thought.
"Min!" someone yelled in the background on the other side of the line.
"Ups, gotta go. Speak to you later, dad," the person laughed and left, while leaving the phone go on. Jumyeon waited for a second.
"Take Min back to his room, he broke the rules again," he heard woman's voice talking to someone.
"Hello?" he tried to talk again to gain attention of the lady.
"Oh, hello. I'm very sorry, hope Min didn't bother you, who were you calling? The call times are in the morning...," the woman was rumbling on and on, Junmyeon patiently waiting for her to stop.
"I actually called, I found this number in my phone and I couldn't remember it, so I tried to call to find out, whose it is," He explained quickly, which was followed by two seconds long pause.
"Dear, this is Mental health care Hamchun Facility. Do you remember now? Do you have someone from your family here? Have you been hospitalised with us...," the women didn't stop talking and Junmyeon found it hard to focus and realise, what she just said.
"Thank you...," he mumbled mid her speech and hung up, letting the hand with his phone down. Hamchun facility? It was well known psychiatric clinic in Seoul. Why would someone call to Oh's house... from there?
Junmyeon was flustered by this discovery, he didn't know what he was expecting to find out, but this was beyond everything. It still could mean, someone was prank calling Jihye's house, but then is it possible for someone to do that two years in a row on regular basis? It didn't make any sense.
Should he dig deeper?
He needs to know, who was it and why was he doing that?
He picked up his phone again, to call Jihye this time. He only wanted to hear her voice for a second, but just as he predicted the phone kept on ringing, she ignored him again. He sighed.
He texted to Sehun, if he wants to hang out in the evening, wanting to go to his house and at least ogle his best friend's sister, while she is around.
But he got let down, as Sehun texted him right back, saying he has something important to do tonight.
Why is everyone ignoring him?
He looked at the clock on the wall of his room, it was late in the afternoon. The meant Jihye must be back at home. He was sitting around for too long, he is usually very patient person, but even he had some limits. He got up from bed an decided to surprise Jihye by his visit, only hoping Bora won't be there.
He drove to Oh's house like crazy person, not even knowing what he is going to tell her to persuade her to stop pushing him away. It was hurting him, everything that was hurting her, was automatically paining him, almost like he wasn't his own person anymore. He was directly connected to her.
It was ridiculous to just admit that in his head. He felt like, during the short time, he started to depend on her more than he should. Maybe he was still being too fast, but whenever he is with her, he can't help it. He wants to know her as much as it was humanly possible.
When he was walking on the pathway towards her house, he remembered the evening he came here to see her, for the fist time after eternity, taking her by surprise. Even at that time, having different reasons to see, he was weirdly excited. How ridiculous was that.
He didn't bother to hesitate by the door and pressed the bell button. He waited for a few seconds, until the door opened and Jihye was standing there. Dressed in his oversized hoodie and loose pants, her hair was tied up in high pony tail, while few strands were framing her small face, underlining the beauty of her huge eyes.
She looked up at him, almost the same startled way, she did all those weeks ago, when he came to see her.
"Jun...," she whispered breathlessly. His heart pace picked up on pace, not having any control over his body whatsoever. He stopped his arms stretching towards her, in attempt to hug her.
"Hey baby. I heard you are home alone tonight. Shall we have a date night?" how he managed to sound so confident, he had no idea. She was gaping at him, like he was speaking in alien language. He simply made few steps close, crossing the threshold of the house, as she was backing away from him. Before she could start thinking straight, he walked past her into the house, closing the door behind him.
He ended up in the kitchen, taking out the juice box, like he was at home, to pour some in the glass. All that while she was watching him, with her hands resting on her hips. The sleeves of the hoodie were way too long, which made her look even more precious. He almost started to choke on his orange juice as he stood there, returning her stare.
"You shouldn't be here Jun," she notified him with serious tone. All he could think off was, how cute she looks. It was hard to focus, when she looked the way she did right now. He liked the comfortable, ready for bed style on her. All he wished for was, that she gets as much of the sleep as possible.
"My girlfriend is alone at home, of course I should be here. I'm not the type to waste any of the time to see girl I like," he said it on purpose. They didn't say anything of this sort to each other yet and he knew it will distract her to the point, she will forget about kicking him out.
She opened her mouth and closed it, to repeat the same motion, while he walked towards her, with grin on his lips, he could not supress any longer. Thankfully she didn't have strength to pull away, when he bent down to have his face in the level with hers.
"Just try and push me away all you want, I have my ways to keep you next to be, princess," he was aware it sounded like a threat, but she didn't seem to realise, because her eyes slid down to his lips, probably not even knowing, what he just said.
His mind went fuzzy.
Damn... she didn't even have to do anything at all and he felt like loosing his sanity.
Time retreat.
He made step back, because one second later and he would launch for her, with no way of stopping.
"Sehun said, he has something important to do tonight, do you know what? Just curious," he mumbled, clearing his throat. Her clouded hazel eyes cleared up, pressing her lips into thin line.
"I'm suspecting him from stalking Bora right now," she shared, avoiding his eyes. Jun raised his eyebrows, waiting for Jihye's further explanation. "Bora went out with Baekhyun. Just like they always do, as friends. But Bora said in front of Sehun, that it's a date," she didn't have to say anything more.
"So stalking Bora is more important than I am? I will have to have a talk with him," he spouted, pouting his lips.
"Please do, I tried. He needs to cure this crush he has on Bora," she asked of him, which made him think.
"I don't think, you cure out of it just like that. Maybe Bora feels the same way," he suggested and Jihye chuckled.
"Bora likes Baekhyun, everyone knows that, Sehun knows that more than anyone else. Some loves are just not meant to be," it seemed like her words had double meaning, which caused a frown create a crease between his eyebrows.
"Every love has a chance. It depends how much the two will fight for it," he retorted firmly, returning her flaming gaze with the same power she did.
"Junmyeon, I will go to bed now... I didn't sleep well past few nights. You should go home now," she didn't want to talk about it and had to stop himself from wanting to trigger something within her and made her tell him, what exactly is going on in that beautiful head of hers.
"You go to sleep. I will wait until Sehun comes back from his mission impossible," he told her with soft voice. He balled his hand into fists, restraining himself from going to her as she left to walk upstairs, without sparing him a glance. She was so stubborn. He needs to find her weak spot.
He was not even considering telling her about his little discovery. He will deal with it without her knowing a thing. He will fight all her demons for her.
He ended up playing on Sehun's Xbox for following two hours, but his mind was preoccupied with thinking about Jihye. He couldn't bear it any longer and went upstairs to see if she is sleeping. He didn't care she will get mad at him again, for looking for her. He was alright with that, as long as he can see her to get some proper sleep.
The moment he opened the door and found her in the bad, furrowing her eyebrows, clutching the duvet under her fingers and breathing irregularly, he didn't wait for anything and quickly crossed the distance between him and the bed. He took her hand into hers, her finger grabbing his thumb, like it was the only thing it could save her from the pain inside of her.
He let the smooth humming come out of his mouth, slowly and quietly, to not invade her sleep. In a few seconds her body somewhat relaxed, she opened her mouth slightly, letting out a breath ad he continued singing. He sat down on the carpet, keeping his hold on her hand and watched her, while she slept.
He didn't even realise his heart was squeezing tightly the first moment he saw her suffering in silence again. The thought that he needs to become stronger, crossed his mind again.
That mindset became big deal the more he was convinced, he wants to spend all his time with this girl.
However, challenging it felt now, it was bound to become even harder as the time flows by. He had no idea how much he will have to toughen up to be able to keep his hold onto to her.
He didn't even know how, but he fell asleep, when she completely calmed down, it made him feel weirdly serene as well. His head fell on the edge of her bed, while having his fingers intertwined with hers. It wasn't the most comfortable position he could sleep at, but for now it served its purpose.
He remembered not having any dream as he slept, or he could not remember anything the moment he woke jerking his head up, it almost hurt his neck. His fingers grabbed thin air, as the hand he was holding before he fell asleep, was gone.
He sleepily peeled his eyelids to look around. He recalled, why he was in Jihye's room straight away. He rubbed his stiffened neck, carefully moving it around, while his eyes ended up on the empty mattress. He was suddenly very awake as he eyed the vacant bed in front of him.
"Jihye?" he wondered, if she's gone to the toilet, but he didn't hear a response, so he got up at last, frowning.
Why did he feel so anxious?
He even checked the other side of the be, if by any chance, she fell on the floor... maybe she went downstairs for the drink, but he found full glass of water on her nightstand. He was about to walk out of her room and look for her, when he strode by the window, which was facing to the backyard.
He froze in the middle of movement, when he saw her walking on the grass, with her bare feet, wearing exactly what she did, when she went to bed.
The sight would not be very disturbing, if the unsettling feeling didn't sink down in his stomach. All he could was staring down from the window on her slowly walking figure, while his heart hammered against the ribcage.
She seemed to be absentminded, but he could not see her face, as her back was facing that side of the house.
What is she doing down there... perhaps she needed some fresh air...
The thing was, she was getting too close to the edge of the swimming pool...
Before he could even take one breath in to call her name, she simply stopped right by verge of the pool, her toes touching the cold tiles.
He didn't wait to see her fall in. He shot out of her room, the panic spreading into his limb as he sprinted down the stairs, skipping the last three steps to land down under the stairs. It was a race with time. He should have run the moment he saw he walking down in the bac garden. What was he thinking...
He was not thinking when he flung open back door of the house. One look on the unmoving water surface of the pool, sent his mind to the horror mode. His muscles protested, while he made sure he runs even faster than he did so far. He tripped over the garden trough, hitting his left knee badly as he landed on the hard gravel. He got up immediately, flying toward the pool.
He saw he on the bottom of it. He didn't think, when he jumped in. The moment he would allow himself to do so, he would lose his mind.
The cold water surrounded him, he kept his eyes open, not leaving Jihye's unmoving body lying on the bottom of the pool from his sight. He put all his strength into his stokes, diving deeper, while the air was escaping his lungs slowly but surely.
He gripped the fabric of the oversized jumper and pulled Jihye towards him, when he reached her. Everything felt fuzzy around them, as he pushed against the base of the pool to get them both back up.
His mind was empty, when he got to the contact with the air on the surface, panting loudly. He was sure he was yelling at unconscious Jihye in his arms, when he swam towards the shallow end of the pool, with the steps leading out. The adrenalin flowing in his bloodstream and determination, was the only thing right now, helping him pull through this nightmare.
He didn't know, how he managed to pull himself and Jihye on the hard concrete around the pool. He laid Jihye on her back, with her soaked up clothes, creating big puddle around them. He never released his grasp on her jumper, shaking with her. He was shaking himself, but he needed to make her open her eyes... now...
"Jihye!" he shook her body violently, but no response came from her.
He bent down, to listen to her breath, that was not coming out of her agape, pale lips.
Heart in his chest hurt so badly, as he stared at her face, water drips sliding down into her already wet hair.
He started with resuscitation.
Every time, he left her lips with his, breathing life into her, while pumping her heart, he kept on talking to her.
"Jihye, come back to me... so I can scold you. Come back right now, so I can kiss you... Jihye," he was out of breath, the muscles on his arms were burning, but he never stopped. Not allowing himself to even think about what ifs...
