Chapter 17 : Basket Of Loaves
In no time, we arrived at East Portal Park. During the transportation, Jimin moved to the front seat while his mom sat next to me at the back. She wasn't much of a talker but more of an inquisitive person. Not that I mind answering them, her questions weren't that too personal. I just find odd that she was asking me about what I usually do first thing in the morning and I dead-ass answered, "Uhm, I wake... up?" Then she laughed.
As I snapped out of my thoughts, I immediately hopped out of the car as I've noticed that I'm already being left out.
Jimin's bodyguards began to take some things out from the compartment of the car while on the other side, I started wondering what the hell we're doing here. I followed the guards as they pulled out a huge blanket, a basket, utensils, and more.
While Ina and his son enjoyed the peaceful park with their arms linked, I helped the guards with their assignments. Once their picnic blankets were settled, I watched them from afar and fidgeted around the area. As Jimin's secretary, I should tend to whatever they need as of the moment, especially now that Jimin's mom is back, the boy must've been really excited.
That's why he was scolding me eagerly to move faster.
As they went back, they noticed the foods placed on the ground, and without further ado, they immediately sat on the blanket with smiles on their faces. The guards turned their heel and I realized that we should give them some privacy together. I was about to turn mine when a sweet voice called for my name.
"Elise, where are you going?" Ina asked. "Sit down and join us." Before I can even open my mouth, she gestured for me to sit next to Jimin and I looked at the guy.
He's not paying any attention. His eyes were darted on a basket filled with food as if he was thinking deeply about something. Timidly, my lips curved upwards before I hesitantly sat down next to him.
"Try the loaves, I baked them myself." The woman informed and I nodded. Slowly, I placed my hand inside the basket and I felt something smooth inside of it. Curiosity got me, so I pulled the thing out.
Snake.
"What the fuckity fuck, oh, damn it!" I screeched when the thing I got was a toy snake. I immediately throw it away and it's good news that I didn't hit any of the two persons who are laughing because of my misery. Ina laughed quietly while Jimin cackled like it's the end of the world.
"You should've seen the look on your face," Jimin said while catching his breath.
The next thing I knew, his mom started to explain why she did that. Apparently, she and her son's bonding are pranks (which are not below the belt). It's their way to make their guests more comfortable and reveal their true colors in an instant. Some times it worked, just like how it worked for me.
I realized that Jimin's mom is goofy and bubbly despite whatever she's going through. "So, when is the wedding?"
Jimin and I both choked at the same time. A chunk of bread got stuck inside my throat and the two of them noticed. Ina quickly poured a glass of mango juice on a cup and gave it to me. "Mom, what was that for?"
"Chimchim, my age isn't turning backward. I want a grandson or a cute baby girl." The woman demanded and confusion is written all over my face.
"Mom, Elise has a boyfriend." Jimin washed away the hope in his mom's eyes.
She laughed sadly and looked down, "A wife can be stolen by any men out there, what more if it's just a girlfriend."
"Mom," Jimin clenched his jaws. Somehow, I understand the hidden meaning behind her words. She's talking about her cheater of a husband and that made me sad.
"I'm just kidding!" The lady brushed it off. "Kids, always remember that cheating is not and never will be an option. Hm?" She looked at me and this time my throat got dry.
Does she know?
I slowly nodded and I heard Jimin clicked his tongue.
Fortunately, the atmosphere was set back to normal during our small picnic. When it's time to pack up, Ina called for me while Jimin went to find a comfort room. "Yes?" I responded.
"You don't have a boyfriend at the moment, do you?" I blinked my eyes rapidly at her question.
"Oh, uhm... well. How did you know?" I nervously asked back. Instead of answering, she winked at me with a mischievous smile stretched onto her face.
I refrain from asking about the old lady's curiosity because I don't want to come to a point where I'll be put in an awkward situation. Jimin's mom has the tendency to put people in that place through her questions and statements. I don't know if it's intentional or coincidental but I think it's better if I just keep my mouth shut.
During the ride back home, it's much more silent. Only the gentle sound of the car engine and the voice of the DJ on the radio linger around the car. The ambiance was enough to make me doze off but Jimin's mother started speaking. "Honey, can you stop by a convenient store and buy me some mosquito repellent?"
"Yeah, sure," Jimin replied and looked at his mother through the rearview mirror. Once we saw a store on the streets, Jimin and his guard hopped out of the car leaving me alone with Ina.
To catch my attention, she gently holds my wrist. "My son still has a huge fat crush on you, just in case he tells you something different."
"A what?" The lines on my forehead began to multiply.
"He never stops talking about you, even after what happened two years ago." My heart stopped for a second when I realized that she knew my grave mistakes to her son all along. I immediately put on my apologetic face and lowered my head in embarrassment.
"I'm sorry for hurting your son." I began. "I really am."
Jimin's mom laughed sweetly and raised my chin. "It's okay. Jimin is very honest with me. I know all his dirty secrets and habits. I guess it's time for him to meet someone permanently. I'm just really sad about your ex-boyfriend. How are things between you and him?"
"We're cool now, we settled things properly. I was actually working with him in an accounting firm if it weren't for Jimin who told my boss to fire me." I smiled sheepishly.
"It's just my son's way to keep you by his side." She informed. "In fact, I left my job as a waitress in Italy when I heard from him that you both met again."
"Oh, may I ask why?" I politely questioned.
"I'll make sure things between the two of you go to the right track this time." She wiggles her eyebrows like she is planning something that I am not going to like.
"Oh, no, your son and I are actually in good terms, ma'am. There's no need to keep an eye on us." I politely refused her idea.
She twitched her lips on the side and she doesn't seem convinced with my statement. "Dear, I know how Jimin is treating you right now. He tells me everything, remember?"
I gulped.
She suddenly handed me an envelope. "Wear something sexy and elegant, okay?" I had no choice but to nod at her request. "And please, don't call me ma'am, you'll call me mom." She winked one more time.
