Nineteen

The flight back to Buenos Aires was silent. Everyone has their head in the clouds, lost deep in their thoughts.

The Rebellion. Janey had heard Nicholas talking about it several times but she never really bothered to listen too carefully, thinking she wasn't involved.

They were after her.

Did Nicholas know this? Was he trying to protect her without her knowing? Or maybe he was part of the rebellion. No, don't be silly. He wouldn't.

Janey couldn't help but get this odd, sickly feeling in her stomach telling her someone close to her would eventually join the rebellion. She repeatedly pushed it away but it kept on returning, filling her mouth with a bitter, sour taste. The taste you get after throwing up.

Harrison's a smart man and being the Society's main enemy shows how powerful he really was. Above all, he's an honest man, one of his best qualities. He does not say anything he doesn't mean. His predictions come true more often than not. Janey really hoped this was one of those instances where he was wrong.

Upon arriving in Buenos Aires, Cassidy rented a car. The company was all out of convertibles so they had to go for the next best thing: a black van. It wasn't much but at least Kyla could stretch her feet and use her laptop in the back.

Like normally, Cassidy drove while Janey was in the passengers seat. No music played this time around and I guess the skies must have sensed the sombre mood because that day, for the first time in a long time, it rained.

"Girls," Nicholas welcomed them with a large embrace. "You're back."

Clearly, he had missed their exchange with Harrison.

"We need to talk," Cassidy mumbled.

After Janey, Cassidy was the most playful our of the three. She wasn't as rebellious or witty as Janey but she still had a few tricks up her sleeve. Kyla was the most serious but she did know how to have a little fun.

I guess the fact that Cassidy was dead serious now was what made Nicholas's smile falter.

"Alright," he said slowly. "What does it concern? By the way, what happened with Harrison? My connection died after that."

They all glanced at each other.

"That's what we need to talk about."

It was Kyla who spoke this time around but that still didn't seem to put him at ease.

"Not here," he uttered. "There are too many people. And not now, Lincoln and I have to research on... Uhm... Something. At five, meet me in my office. I should be done by then. Besides there's someone I want you to meet."

As if on clue, a girl with long, black hair approached them. Her hair had soft curls and freckles speckled her nose. Along with that, she had deep blue eyes, covered by a pair of gold rimmed spectacles. She looked a bit like-

"This is Lily, Lincoln's sister," Nicholas introduced her.

On a normal occasion, Cassidy would have nudged Janey and whispered, "look, it's your sister-in-law."

But this wasn't a normal occasion.

"Hi," Kyla gave her a quick smile. "I'm Blake and this is Tom and that is Dave. Nice to meet you."

"Chill, Kyla," Nicholas laughed slightly. "No need to go all formal with her. She's joining the Society, she's not a threat." He turned to Lily. "This is Kyla, Cassidy and Janey."

"Janey? So your the girl Lincoln's been on about all week." Lily's accent was identical to Lincoln's: a thick Scottish one. Only, her voice was a lot sweeter than her brothers. Janey wasn't quite sure whether that was a good thing or not. She wasn't necessarily in the mood to trust anyone at that moment.

"Oh, really?" Cassidy forced a smile, trying to get rid of the sombre mood. "Told you he liked you. Janey, over here may also have feelings for him."

"Cassidy, you prick!" Janey slapped her arm.

"Come on, like it's not obvious."

Kyla's expression didn't change. It remained nonchalant.

Out of the three girls, she was the most observant. You could say it was a charm or simply a curse in some scenarios.

She noticed the details the others missed. Like how Nicholas was literally forcing himself to smile or how Lily looked like she really didn't want to be there. You could say she was just awkward being around her brother's crush but Kyla knew otherwise.

"Lincoln never mentioned a sister," she uttered nonchalantly.

Lily was clearly taken aback at this statement. Everyone was.

"Well, you only knew him a week. You can't learn everything about a person in that amount of time," she tried to laugh it off.

"But he could have mentioned it."

"But he didn't."

"Why not?"

"I don't know. Do I look like my brother?"

"Janey always talked about her dear sister Paige, even when he was around. Surely, he would have said something about you at that time."

"We don't have a good relationship."

"I didn't ask."

"Are you trying to claim that he isn't my brother?"

"Not at all. Who am I to make such claims when I barely know both of you. I'm just saying that there's something odd about you."

"Kyla, stop it," Nicholas intervened, clearly angry at her. "How dare you be so rude? Show some manners."

"I don't trust her."

"Kyla-"

"Say whatever you want, Nicholas, but I'm not changing my mind. Harrison said the Rebellion were after Janey and right after the mission this girl shows up out of nowhere. Seems fishy, if you ask me."

"Kyla." It was Cassidy's turn to try calm her down. "Think about it a moment-"

"Since Harrison spoke, all I've been doing is thinking. This girl, whatever she is, cannot be trusted."

"But you trust Harrison?" Lily asked, folding her arms over her chest and raising an eyebrow. "Now that seems fishy to me. Harrison's the enemy. Do you really trust him over Nicholas? If so, we all see where your priorities lie. You're either one of Harrison's people or part of the Rebellion. Pick which is true. I'll give you thirty seconds."

Nicholas turned to Kyla, as if actually considering Lily's words. Needless to say, Kyla was outraged.

"Who the heck even are you? Haven't even worked here that long and already making assumptions? And Nicholas and Cassidy, I'm appalled. I've been hunting down Harrison for so long. How dare you even consider what this newbie says!"

The Head of the Society shrugged.

"She has a point."

"So she has a point and yet mine is lack of manners? You considered hers but didn't bother with my claims."

"You have ten seconds left," Lily said innocently.

"Shut your mouth! I will not have a newbie speaking to me in that manner. One more word and I'll bash your head against the wall so hard, you'll be out for a year."

"A threat?" Lily pretended to be surprised. "She's definitely one of Harrison's people if she made such a threat."

Nicholas looked convinced.

"You're kidding me. You have got to be joking. Show me the cameras. Where are they? This has got to be a prank!"

At this point, she was shouting and people stopped their work to look at them. Some even came downstairs to see what the commotion was.

"Kyla, I'm not sure what you are at this point but for the safety of everyone, I think it's best to have you on lock down," Nicholas tried to reason.

"Me? What about her?"

"Kyla, you need to understand-"

"Stop!" Janey yelled so loud she had to take a breath afterwards. "This is ridiculous. Lock her up? That's your plan. You just took information from a newbie against a senior. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Lily's part of the Rebellion but neither am I saying Kyla is. It's very unlike you to come to a conclusion so quickly." Janey tilted her head. "Are you hiding something from us?"

Although structured as a question, it was more of a statement.

Before he could say anything, Lincoln sprinted up to them.

"Janey, how nice to see you again. I mean, well, all of you." His hair was in its natural form: random lose spirals glued to his head. He wore a basic black tee, grey sweatpants and a  dirty pair of red converse. "Mind if I steal Nicholas off you. Great, I knew you wouldn't have a problem with it. Have you met my sister by any chance? Her name is Laila, no, Lily. She's really nice. Anyway, got to go. Bye."

He ran off with Nicholas immediately. Lily gave them all one last scowl before leaving.

"I don't like her attitude," Kyla muttered before turning to Cassidy. "And what ever happened to being a team?"

"Look, her statement made sense."

Kyla was glaring down at her.

"Trust, Cassidy. That's what teamwork is all about! You're just like Nicholas. You never listen to me. Janey has to intervene before you ever listen. And I'm always right. Always! But do you care? No! Because you don't trust me!"

"I do trust you-"

"No, you don't." Kyla sighed and ran a hand through her hair. "You never did."
