Chapter 15: Reader

Hide kept bringing me little trinkets. To "cheer me up", he said. First were the keychains that I wore as bracelets, then there was a sheet of sparkly fish stickers, then a mecha manga, then a bar of Swiss chocolate. A pack of spearmint gum, a fun pair of socks with chameleons on them, a little necklace with Jack Skellington.
Small things. Little things. But I loved them all.
He also brought in board games. There was a gap in time from the car accident to now where I'd ever had anyone to play board games with, so they were all new and exciting.
What Hide didn't expect, though, was that I was super competitive. I think he tried to let me win though.
Then things changed again. A new metaphorical car accident.
"Kaneki's getting out soon, I think!" Hide said with a smile.
"That's great," I said after a long moment.
He nodded. "Which means I should probably go back to attending my classes." He laughed.
I couldn't laugh. "Right..." I myself had stopped going to school. The attacks were happening more frequently as Toma had predicted, and school itself was fairly pointless to me.
"Don't worry though, I'm still going to come visit you. Hey, (y/n)..." He paused like he was nervous.
"What?"
He swallowed and hesitated before shaking his head. "It's nothing. I'll see you tomorrow!" And then he left.
What did he want to ask me?
Well, it's fine. He'll probably just tell me tomorrow.
