Kings, Knights, and Court Jesters

(Erica's POV)

Adam_Berns_ofc has started following you

Who was this guy? I clicked onto his handle and found myself looking at a blue tick. So he was verified. Okay. I scrolled through his posts, mostly about his upcoming films that he was excited about, and some pictures of food.

It annoys me so much when people do that, it's like, I don't need to know what you had for breakfast.

As I kept looking through his page... the only word I could use to describe him was... bland. He was an average looking guy, with an average looking house, and an average-looking smile.

He was different from Ben, who was the opposite of average.

Ben, with his stupid broad grin, and sandy hair, and that stupid attitude that somehow snuck its way into my heart.

It was a need, not a want. I needed to get over Ben. I was Erica Hale. I was strong, brave, icy, and above all, independent. I shouldn't be moping over a boy! I'm too strong for that!

I stood up, my face an impassive wall. My shoulders were stiffened with determination. I would get over him. The question was, how? Who would be the right person to call for 'girl talk?'

(Mike's POV)

I honked my horn loudly to catch Ever's attention as she walked into her new preschool. "I love you, sweetheart!" I shouted. She grinned, showing off the little gap between her two front teeth, and waved excitedly.

"Mike, c'mon, let's go, you're going to embarrass the kid." Ben chided me. I started to drive off. "Oh, so now you're Mr. Perfect Dad now?" I scoffed.

Ben shook his head lightly. "Nah, I just said you weren't." He teased. I rolled my eyes playfully and heaved a false sigh. "Oh, Ben, whatever shall I do with your crude insults?" I asked.

"Oh, that's ripe. You're calling my insults crude? Does 'you look like a hobo in expensive pajamas.' Ring a bell?"

"No, not really," I answered, trying to push his buttons just a bit. Ben preceded to fake faint. "Oh my lord!" He exclaimed dramatically. "Did I just faint?!" I used my free hand to shove him lightly on the shoulder. "Yale School of drama!" I exclaimed equally dramatically. "Shut up." Not missing a beat, I replied "No you."

I drummed my fingers on the steering wheel. I turned on my signal and switched lanes when Ben's phone rang out. His brow furrowed as he read what it said. "What? What is it?" His posture stiffened, and his expression darkened. "The news is saying that some famous director guy is sliding into Erica's DM's."

I made a face. "Ick. You have to get your girl back!" I declared. He shrugged halfheartedly. "She's not 'my girl' she's her own person. If she's happier with him, then she should be with him." His voice broke slightly in the middle of the sentence, clearly filled with emotion.

"Dude, you're assuming she actually likes this guy. We know that he likes her, we don't know if the feelings are reciprocated. Knowing her, they probably aren't." I pointed out.

He sighed. "I guess you're right." I smiled tentatively. "Aren't I always?" He chuckled grimly. "Shove off." He told me.

My knuckles were white on the steering wheel as I said the next part. "Zoe moved on, as you know already. It doesn't bother me as much as it would have a month ago, but it still hurts a bit, how she could move on from me so quickly."

"She doesn't deserve you, you're the best friend in the entire universe."

"And how can you beat that?" I laughed lightly, distracted from the original topic. Ben grinned smugly. "I rest my case. Zoe is a jerk and doesn't deserve you, Mike the almighty."

I made a left turn as I laughed. "I'm Mike the almighty now?" Ben shrugged. "Sure. But I'm King, and you can be my knight." His smile grew even wider. "Actually, I think you would be the court jester." He informed me.

"Hm, whatever you say," I answered.

(Zoe's POV)

I looked up at Will adoringly, as I ran a hand through his dark hair. He smiled his crooked smile, and whispered: "You know how beautiful you are, right?" I batted his hand. "Stop it, you!" He laughed heartily and leaned back in his chair like he knew the effect he had.

His dark hair was a stark contrast to Mike's blond hair, but I liked that he was different from Mike. It was almost like being given a chance to start over.

My ringer went off suddenly, and I groped around my purse trying to find my phone. It was Erica who was calling. "I have to take this call," I informed Will, kissing his stubbly cheek as I stepped into a private corner.

"What's up, Erica?" I asked. "How do you get over a guy?" She asked, using a casual tone. I glanced at Will. "You find someone who's different from them. It worked for me." A pause was on the other line. "Let me rephrase that, how do you get over a guy you love?" I hesitated. "I guess... just do the same thing...?" I said, the answer coming out as more of a question.

"Alright. Thanks. Now I just got to find the exact opposite of Ben. Have a nice one." She answered briskly.

She hung up, and I stared at the phone in my hand. Erica was trying to get over Ben... and I had practically told her to rebound. Did I just sabotage Mike's plan? Shoot.

I dialed Mike's number quickly. He picked up on the third ring. "Why are you reaching out to me?" He asked icily. I paused. "Well..." I heard a sigh on the other side of the line. "Get on with it, I don't have all day." He informed me briskly. "Erm, I might've told Erica to rebound..."

"WHAT?! Damn it!" Mike yelled, his voice rippling with fury. "WHAT IN LIVING HELL MADE YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO TELL ERICA TO REBOUND?!" He shouted. A glass shattered on the other end. "What?!" Came Ben's voice. "Erica's going to rebound?!"

Mike promptly hung up. "Well. That went well." I said sarcastically to no one in particular. "What was that, babe?" Will asked from his living room. "Nothing!" I shouted back.

So. Do we hate Zoe now? I mean... she ain't wrong. But you shouldn't get over our boy Ben! He's too good! Let's do a vote challenge! If you can bring FITYMI to 1050 votes, then, ding ding ding! Another update.
