Chapter Sixteen
When I tried to listen to the silence, I heard myself. I heard the voice from deep within, which tried to tell me something. I was trembling. The thought that I would not be able to find out what it said made me so nervous. I appreciated that Stephanie did understand me.
"Everything will be fine," the phrase she said, but I didn't believe it anymore.
"How can it go on? Please, tell me!" I yelled, stammering a little bit. The tone of my voice depended on shedding tears too much.
We were sitting in the hall during the break with Stephanie. She wanted to support me, but the only things I could still accept were hatred and disappointment.
"I'm so dissatisfied with everything I'm surrounded with. The college, the ex-best friend, the coming concert... I promised to help, but it's impossible, while I'm always crying! Why do these emotions take control over me? I'm done living this way."
"Are you sure that everything you said is the truth? Actually, I doubt it."
"Stephanie, I don't know."
"But what do you know?"
"I know I will try to change my attitude to these problems. It damages me so much, but I really want to change it," I gave my word and ended the conversation.
Stephanie always knew what to say to stop me crying. Since the day of our acquaintance we had been supporting each other. At that moment it was her turn, and I was glad to have a person I could come to besides Eva. I met her in here, at college. That girl studied at the same faculty with us and we had a lot in common. I adored listening to her crazy stories, genuinely laughing and enjoying them. She was just a very good and intelligent girl. I thought Stephanie was one of those people I should communicate with more often.
Stephanie's phone called. We looked at the screen together and I saw the highlighted contact 'Mom'. She hung up and said hello. The call didn't last long, so when she locked her phone up, she had to ask me something.
"Mom insisted on going home right now," she whispered with a worried voice.
"Did anything happen?" I wanted to know.
"I'd like to learn if no, but... Sophie, I need your help today. Can you do me a favor?"
"Anything for a friend," I answered in a supportive way. "What do I need to do?"
"Last week I was offered to distribute a pile of fliers to help. Certainly, I didn't turn down the request, you know. But now... It seems to me today is not an appropriate day to do it. Can you distribute at least some of them for me? Or are you busy?"
I couldn't refuse my friend. Moreover, it was not such a big problem. I was ready to spend some time distributing. Stephanie reached for the bag and took the pile of fliers. I knew that they would be full of announcements about the coming concert, but I had no idea that I would see Daniel's face on the flier! He was smiling on the sheet of paper, showing his snow-white teeth. I couldn't conceal my emotions when I read that he was the most anticipated celebrity there. What was he so famous for?
It looked funny to me, but anyway I went on reading. It was written there that he was the star whose debut album was going to be released! Anything seemed unreal for me, but I didn't want to suspect that I felt jealous. Looking at his fake mask of a handsome guy, I made up my mind. Then it was clear to me Daniel would receive what he really deserved. He couldn't escape his punishment. Justice would triumph soon. Very soon. And it would be all due to clever me.
