Chapter Seventeen
When I thought again and again what Daniel had done to poor Eric, my wish to revenge became much stronger. I ripped the flier apart, trying to control my emotions. I couldn't find out why the unprincipled guy got what he didn't deserve, but the lonely guy who was so kind couldn't succeed. It seemed so unfair to me, and I decided to reveal his real face to everyone.
I took a permanent marker and came back to the hall. I looked at Daniel's charming smile in the photo and smiled too. It came to my mind that a thin mustache would suit him much. And a thick beard. And black strips of eyebrows above his eyes.
When I finished my "improvements" of his appearance, I took all those fliers and decided to distribute them. Obviously, the students that were the first ones who saw my pictures laughed a lot. Now I assured myself that they understood the joke and wouldn't come to the concert to watch such a talented star on the stage. I called Stephanie and said that everything had already been distributed.
Some days later I was looking forward to the concert even more when I heard in the canteen how much some girls were discussing "ugly" Daniel. I knew that they were kidding, but I liked to listen to the things like that. Nobody knew that I had done it.
Eva came to me and sat down on the vacant seat.
"Hey, what's up?" she asked. "Why does your face look like... That?"
I didn't hear her, except the last word.
"Like what?" I asked in reply.
"Never mind", she said in a low voice. "Sophie, I need to go to the library right now, because I don't have enough time. Can you take me some food?"
"Certainly."
Eva thanked me and went away. I stood up to choose what we could eat. There wasn't such a wide diversity, but anyway I was really starving. Having come to the end of the queue, I started to wait. When poor Eric showed up at the canteen, I decided to take him a portion too.
The tray which I was given was really full. It was unbearable for me to hold it in my hands. The crowd couldn't give me a chance to get out. Nobody even helped me at that minute. I was calling Eric, but I was sure he didn't hear me.
"Please, be careful," I was saying to everybody who was close to me. All of them couldn't wait to eat something, that's why I understood their desire not to let me get out of the crowd. "I'm sorry. Excuse me," I apologized. I had no opportunity to turn round. I had to push some people a bit to clear the way up.
I was returning to our table, when Daniel suddenly appeared in front of me. It was impossible for me to notice him in time. The tray filled with food quickly fell down, and all the food was on me.
"Daniel!" I shouted.
Everyone turned to me and switched on their smart phones to take a photo of that stupid situation and dirty me. Angry Daniel didn't change the expression of his face to laugh at me. His rude face sent shivers up and down my spine. It was like a wave of nervousness which touched my back and made me silent. Looking like that in the canteen of the college was even worse than to be wet from head to toe on a rainy day. I had no idea if he had already learnt about the fliers or not. Maybe the expression of his face presumed the positive answer. I wasn't ashamed. Eric saw everything too, but he didn't come up to me. I thought for a second that the reason for it was Daniel... And I got disappointed in Eric.
Nothing could be worse. I was a totally messed up girl, standing in front of my acquaintances and the young man who really controlled my emotions and behavior. His eyes were too expressive for me.
The next minute everything turned out not the way I had expected.
"Guys, delete all the photos and videos from your phones right now, please!" Daniel said in a loud voice, turning to the crowd of students. "I think it wouldn't be such a pleasure for you to be in her shoes, right? Then don't make a problem, okay?"
The influence of that guy was immense. I could only see how all the people with sad faces were clicking buttons on their phones. I was sure that they were deleting the juicy information forever.
"Thank you," I told him. "It was kind of you."
I hoped to see a smile on his face, but it didn't happen. He looked again at the tray and didn't look at me anymore. I ran away, trying to find the reason for his reaction. It came into my mind that I had to tell him the truth.
I came home to change the dirty clothes, to take a quick shower and eat something appropriate. Nobody was there, except me. I was alone with my thoughts about Daniel and the things that had happened.
