Chapter Five

I had to get to work as soon as I could. Eva didn't talk to me, that's why I felt really lonely. No one around me wanted to offer help. I had to be responsible for everything.

After the classes the teacher showed me where the boxes were. I needed to move them to the assembly hall to start decorating that day in order to finish it as early as possible. To my surprise, the number of boxes was more than I had expected. I found out I wouldn't be able to carry them. I don't know why, but every person I met in the hall was too busy to help. Preparing myself for something awfully unpleasant, I went to the hall again to look at the situation in the particulars.

I took a heavy box and headed straight for the assembly hall. The music, coming from the hall, was filling the whole premises. My desire was to concentrate on listening to it and to forget about the pain in my back caused by the box with decorations in my arms.

It was intriguing to assume what was inside the box. I hoped something noteworthy would be there, but later the voice in my head told me that we were studying in an ordinary art college in a little town. Then what cool things could there be in the box? I presumed almost nothing.

All the way to the assembly hall was gone, that's why I needed to come into the door, but the huge box didn't give me a chance to see what was ahead. The piano sounds that were giving birth to the music helped me to find the right position of the door. Fortunately, I wasn't mistaken.

My hands were hurting even more than my back. I shook them a little bit to make blood move faster. Turning to the piano, which was in the corner of the hall, I saw that newbie, Eric. I got so moody that I couldn't say anything. He stopped playing.

"Hi" He said. "Your name is Sophie, isn't it? The principal mentioned you in his speech this morning."

Eric set eyes on me, but there was a blank expression on my face.

"It is" The only thing I decided to say.

"Well, I see you're carrying this box alone. It's very heavy, right? Why didn't you ask someone for help?"

"Do you think I did not?"

He nodded, only then I added:

"You're really wrong, Eric. I asked almost everyone I saw in the hall."

    "And no one was free?"

It was my turn to nod.

"It's sad to hear. Do you want me to help? If you're working as a decorator here, I have some spare time. So what?"
