Chapter Eleven
Now I'm sure that it was his fault. It was just a betrayal from Daniel's side. Maybe he found a girl, fell in love with her and forgot me. It was really much better to think so in order to stop crying.
When I came to college the next week I saw Eric in the hall. He looked sad, but still very cute. I felt nervous to ask him how he was, but anyway I did it.
"Eric!" I screamed to make him notice me through the crowd. "Hey!"
I hoped to see the smile on his face. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. It was typical for the beginning of a new week. He was standing next to the corner, holding in his hands a heavy bag.
"Hey, Sophie."
We didn't have a desire to discuss anything important. So we kept silent. His eyes radiated the feeling of confidence. I was drowning in them. I wanted to know whether he felt that way. I really appreciated we were friends. I would never be tired of repeating that. There seemed to be a chance of finding another friend who could replace Daniel in my life.
Eva opened the door and I saw her. She was wearing a beautiful dress that made her really look gorgeous. I would share my profound admiration for her if Eric didn't look at her so fixedly. It didn't mean that he liked her new dress, but I couldn't calm down when I recollected his interest in Eva.
The bell rang and we had to divide into two groups. Eric followed his friends from his faculty, but Eva took my right elbow and made me stay. She said it was something worth sharing.
"Guess who's coming back," she whispered with sarcasm in her voice.
"It might be anyone you're waiting for."
"I know you're too, sweet. I think it's interesting for you."
"What do you mean?" I asked in an unfriendly way.
"Your Daniel will study here! Are you excited to see him again? I'm sure he is excited to see you. Let me be with you when it happens, okay?" She was yelling and smiling in anticipation of my joy.
I didn't find out what she was getting at until she repeated his name. Daniel was going to disturb me once again. What were his plans? Was he going to keep his promise to return? I couldn't figure it out. I turned round and went to the classroom.
"Aren't you glad to hear that?" Eva gave me a shout. "You should remember what person he was for you then. Maybe he's gonna be sorry for splitting up with you. Don't you think so either?"
She wanted me to listen to her, but I was still sure it was all a joke. I was about to share with Eric my fears and thoughts, explain him that I was confused. Eva wouldn't let me go.
"Don't tell me you don't want to learn how he is right now, girl."
I looked again at her and a long pause stopped me. I knew she wouldn't leave me, that's why I nodded and we went to the canteen together. It was the first lesson we missed that week. She found a free table in the corner where everyone could seem invisible for other students and teachers. People go there to hide from the world. It was what I really wanted.
We sat down there when I took a free chair.
"His father earns big money. He's very rich as I know. Daniel is still an only child in the family. He went to the local school, but he didn't like to be there. Oh, he also works as a singer. Daniel writes music and sings in a band, but I don't know if it's absolutely true."
I was marveled that she knew a lot. A strange girl who knew him only from my stories as my ex-best friend leant about the new Daniel more than I did. It was hard to believe in it, wasn't it?
"How do you know that?"
"You disappoint me!" Eva screamed, but there was kindness on her face. "The first one who always gets some gossip is me! But one problem is that I can't always check all the information I get and share later."
"It's okay," I said. "But what's the reason for his returning now?" I wondered with a great pleasure how to spy his secrets out.
"His grandmother had got ill. His family had to come back to look after her. But do you know what the most weird thing is?"
I shook my head.
"His father is a sponsor of our college. That was the main reason for him to study here."
I asked myself whether he was a real liar or not. Why didn't he tell me that? Too many questions without answers. I decided to find out everything about him soon. What if he was contriving something? I would learn. I would undoubtedly do.
